Tawa gets more neighbourly
Tawa is the first suburb in Wellington to reach 500 members on
website neighbourly.co.nz.
St Heliers in Auckland leads with
800 members. Tawa, Karori,
Brooklyn, Miramar and Khandallah
are leading the way in the Wellington region.
Neighbourly launched around
New Zealand in May after a twomonth pilot in Auckland. The site
fosters interaction and conversation
between neighbours and organisations by creating an easy way for
them to talk and share online
through free and private websites.
Crime, cancellations, events,
roadworks and the impact of city
council decisions could be among
the topics for discussion.
Neighbourly co-founder Casey
Eden said enthusiastic Tawa
residents, Wellington City councillor Malcolm Sparrow in particular,
had led to Neighbourly being taken
up in the suburb.
‘‘Malcolm was pivotal in spreading the word in the early days,
which demonstrates the impact one
person can make to a thriving
Neighbourly community,’’ Eden
said.
‘‘Tawa has always had a real community feel, lending itself nicely to
a concept like Neighbourly taking
off,’’ he said.
‘‘Tawa is effectively a small town
on the outskirts of a world-class city
and that’s what people like about it.
‘‘We’re adding 25 to 30 new
members a week [to Neighbourly]
and long may it continue – it’s a
great way for local people to feel
better connected.’’
Neighbourly is now active in more
than 1400 suburbs around New
Zealand and has more than 40,000
members.

Sparrow said that while he may
have sparked initial interest in
Neighbourly Tawa, the site now had
many passionate advocates who
were helping to drive its membership.
