St Heliers in Auckland leads with 800 members. Tawa, Karori, Brooklyn, Miramar and Khandallah are leading the way in the Wellington region. Neighbourly launched around New Zealand in May after a twomonth pilot in Auckland. The site fosters interaction and conversation between neighbours and organisations by creating an easy way for them to talk and share online through free and private websites. Crime, cancellations, events, roadworks and the impact of city council decisions could be among the topics for discussion. Neighbourly co-founder Casey Eden said enthusiastic Tawa residents, Wellington City councillor Malcolm Sparrow in particular, had led to Neighbourly being taken up in the suburb. ‘‘Malcolm was pivotal in spreading the word in the early days, which demonstrates the impact one person can make to a thriving Neighbourly community,’’ Eden said. ‘‘Tawa has always had a real community feel, lending itself nicely to a concept like Neighbourly taking off,’’ he said. ‘‘Tawa is effectively a small town on the outskirts of a world-class city and that’s what people like about it. ‘‘We’re adding 25 to 30 new members a week [to Neighbourly] and long may it continue – it’s a great way for local people to feel better connected.’’ Neighbourly is now active in more than 1400 suburbs around New Zealand and has more than 40,000 members. ‘ Tawa has always had a real community feel, lending itself nicely to a concept like Neighbourly taking off.
