Wockhardt Hospital emergency service
saves the life of a 7 year old
Vashi: Suresh (name
changed) was born of
forceps delivery in the
year 2008. When he
was 4 months old it was
found that he was
suffering from
Hydrocephalus
( a b n o r m a l
accumulation of
cerebrospinal fluid
(CSF) in the ventricles
of the brain). He was
first operated at 5
months of age wherein
a VP shunt surgery was
done using an Indian
Shunt.
Due to this surgery,
Suresh had to bear the
side effect of tightening of Achilles
Tendon (tendon of the back of the
leg) for which he was operated in
2009. Later in 2011, Suresh had
episodes of vomiting and loose
motions for which he had a
replacement surgery of the Indian
Shunt and an Imported
Programmable Shunt was put.
But on 16th December 2014,
Suresh suddenly had episodes of
vomiting followed by a neck pain.
He was brought in at Wockhardt
Hospital, Mira road in an
emergency situation as the pain was

almost unbearable. Dr. Mohnish
Bhatjiwale, Neurosurgeon
diagnosed Suresh and found a
leakage in the shunt site. So a
reprogramming of the shunt was
done and pressure was reduced from
1.0 to 0.5.
On 26th Dec, he had 5-6 episodes
of convulsions for which he was
shifted to ICU. Immediately he was
taken up for emergency surgery for
VP shunt and an Indian shunt was
put in site. Suresh was conscious,
oriented and hemodynamically
stable at time of discharge.
Dr. Mohnish Bhatjiwale,
Neurosurgeon at
Wockhardt Hospital,
Mira road who had to
work hard in making
this operation
successful said,
“Hydrocephalus can
happen to anyone, it
usually develops in
elder people, but
however it is much
likely to be seen in
infants and children. In
the case of Suresh, a
series of operation had
to be done in order end
his pain and save him.
Indian healthcare
equipments are as good
as imported ones as the
Indian Shunt was proven to be the
final life saver.”
Mostly people do not get proper
facilities during the time of
emergencies as they are not
available at the hospitals.
Wockhardt hospital has state of the
art healthcare facilities to treat
during the time of emergencies
which proved to be useful for
Suresh during his critical condition.
It is most necessary to get proper
treatment during the time of critical
emergencies as it is really important
to help save lives.
