Despite being the sole author of this thesis, by no means the sole contributor! Many
people have contributed directly or ·indirectly to this thesis, to my education, and to
my life, and this is the only opportunity to thank them.
First and foremost, I would take this opportunity to express my sincere and
profound gratitude to my supervisor Dr. C.M. Gupta, Director, CDRI, Lucknow, for
his keen interest and constant encouragement throughout my research training. I
respect his vast knowledge and vision for the subject which always reflected in this
study. I have been lucky to work under his unique guidance that develops a sense of
sincerity and self confidence.
I would like to thank and express my regards to Dr. V.K. Bajpai (EM Unit) for
allowing me to collaborate with him. I am deeply impressed with his style of
encouragement and appreciation that helped making this study interesting.
I am thankful to Dr. Vinod bhakuni for his kind support in odd times and help
during the course of my research. I am also thankful to Dr. Saman Habib for her
help in some of the experiments and valuable discussions in my research work.

wish to extend my sincere thanks to Dr. Subramanya who impressed me the most

I must not forget my seniors Drs. Matloob Hussain, Subba Roo Gangishetty,

personal as well as professional life- my wife, who always provided moral support
and donated her valuable hours to my research.
