CANSTRUCTION ® VANCOUVER TOP 10 RULES
All building materials and methods observed the night of the build-out are to be conveyed to the Jury. The committee
may require that all teams submit a list of their building materials or building systems they will be employing if it is in
question. Competition organizers do not disqualify an entry. All decisions are left in the hands of the Jury.
1.
All teams must have one member who is an architect, engineer, landscape architect, graphic designer, art
teacher or other designated design professional.
2.
Structures MUST be structurally self-supporting. NO 2×4 board’s, NO half-inch plywood, NO half-inch thick
tubing, NO sheet metal. Permissible: one-quarter inch thick foam-core, cardboard, masonite, plywood,
plexiglass, threaded rod – for the purpose of leveling or balancing materials but not as load bearing. Cardboard tubes used as guides must also be limited to one-quarter inch thick. A structure where the ¼” leveling
materials cannot be seen is usually judged superior to a structure where it is in plain view.
3.
Maximum size for a structure is 10ft L x 10ft W x 8ft H.
4.
Max. size of the official team that actually builds the structure is five (5) persons. Only 5 team members
are permitted to build at one time. You may have one additional person to un-box cans. The five team
members include those who are cutting foam-core and other materials, etc. Teams may swap out members
and are allowed a max.15 minute transition. Regardless of how many team members are in the group, five
individuals must be selected as the official team members. They will receive name tags with team ribbons the
night of the gala and their names will appear on the signage accompanying the structure.
5.
Aluminum food cans of all sizes may be used. Some food manufacturers are switching to plastic. If using
plastic containers make sure they can take the pressure of cans from above.
6.
Cans must be full, unopened, and with labels intact and legible. Labels may not be covered, stripped off or
altered in any way
7.
Teams should visit their assigned site in advance of the build-out date to determine if there are any problems
in positioning their entry in the space provided. Structures should be placed well back from window walls for
photographic purposes. If the host site is carpeted or has uneven flooring each team should provide a
plywood or masonite base.
8.
Velcro, clear and double-faced tape may be used. High-tension rubber bands, nylon string, wire, tie-backs are
permissible. No permanent adhesives
9.
No alcohol, glass containers, pet food, perishable or open packages of food allowed.
10.
Award winners in the 5 international categories (Jurors’ Favourite, Best Meal, Best Use of Labels,
Structural Ingenuity and Honorable Mentions x2) will be forwarded to the International Competition
(slides/ photos are sent). Structures that don’t comply with these rules are exempt from international
competition and are eligible for local awards only.

GETTING
READY TO
BUILD
READ THE RULES!
Don’t begin without understanding what is required and please pay careful
attention to some adjustments to the rules. Big CANBrother is watching...
GATHER THE TROOPS!
Bring together a group of interested people from your office, your friends, clients or school. Delegate responsibilities
and tasks (sourcing cans, designing, fundraising, troop management). You’ll need to sign up:
A captain (sometimes teams have 2 captains to share the load)
A designer (architect, engineer, or graphic designer) with expertise in computer assisted design programs (not
mandatory)
Gophers, builders, shoppers, planners, fundraisers
BRAINSTORM
Spend several sessions brainstorming.
Think about a theme. Have everyone come to the first meeting with at least one idea. Throw ideas up on the
board and see what sticks - find several concepts everyone can get behind. Considerations: Can it be build out of
cans? How will it stand? Are there canned food products in the right size and colour that can articulate the
design?
UNDERSTAND THE RULES!
Did we say that already?
10
ABOUT THE THEME
We will announce a great open-ended theme that gives lots of room for ideas and interpretations; something
that represents all that we love about this town. Think about your favorite animated character or image,
that special piece of artwork, what it symbolizes to you. Build a story around your selection and how it relates to our fight
against hunger. It could be a super hero, it could be a classic or an epic or a simple poem made real (ok, but out of cans)."
REGISTER YOUR SCULPTURE CONCEPT
But even with a wide-open theme, it just seems like teams always come up with the same ideas. To avoid
dissapointment, all Captains must inform Michelle Lee, [email protected] or Scott Gray,
[email protected] of their design idea to make sure it will not conflice with others in the competition.
Team with the idea first gets first rights to the idea, and latecomers will be asked to vary their concept.

FOOD ORDERING
Designing a canned food sculpture takes into account the colour of the label and the size of the can. It is important
to make your food choices early on in the design process. Many teams buy a number of single cans from a variety of
retailers to work with during the design phase.
It is suggested that teams order approx. 5% - 10% more cans than the exact numbers needed for your design.
Dents, differences in packaging, last minute changes to design, etc. can result in variations to plans. It is always
better to have slightly more cans than you need rather than fewer!
The Greater Vancouver Food Bank is the designated recipient of all the food used in the Canstruction Vancouver
competition. Any canned food not needed for the finished sculpture is typically packaged ad taken to the Food
Bank at the end of the build. HY Louie will only accept FULL UNOPENED CASES back for credit should teams require
a return.
HY LOUIE - FOOD WHOLESALE PURCHASE
HY Louie has been an official supplier to Canstruction® for 13 years and many of our teams have come to
rely on their amazing knowledge of colours and sizes of cans. This year, Kerry Robins is jumping on board
and will be helping our teams get the best colours, cans and values. Don’t hesitate to give him a call. Kerry
Robins, 604-444-5430 or [email protected] . He can help you with organizing your wholesale purchases at
HY Louie (they deliver!) and has a host of great money saving ideas. Call him if you have any questions.
Please note that all Oceans Brands have partnered with HY Louie; ALL OCEANS TUNA orders must go directly
through HY Louie
12
FOOD COSTS
It is the responsibility of each team to provide all the food needed for their sculpture. Many teams have undertaken
creative fundraising efforts, partnered with other companies to share costs, or sought donations from companies
they do business with.
DESIGNATED BENEFICIARY – GVFBS
The Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society (GVFBS) is the designated beneficiary of Canstruction Vancouver, and
food from the event is used for their distribution programs. The food bank supports over 25,000 clients every
month, and 40% of those are families.
13
THE
BUILD
FLOOR TREATMENTS
Your site will have ground protection to build on. Once your sculpture is complete, you may remove any excess
Canstruction will provide every team with construction paper to place on the floor wherever cans are being
stacked, sorted or stored. Two layers of ths paper MUST be placed under each pallet of food.
We recommend that you do all cardboard cutting, spraying (painting or gluing) prior to the build. There is
absolutely no cutting directly on the floors. All cardboard cutting must be done at designated cutting stations in
each of the venues.
At no time will paint spraying be allowed in the build area. Stations will be set up for teams in the loading
dock areas if they need to use them.
Be advised that the team will be responsible to any damage to the floors in their area.
TEAM SURVIVAL KIT
Be sure to bring all the supplies and tools you need to create your sculpture and plan for the unexpected. These
items include (but are not limited to) a dolly or hand card, stop ladder or two, utility knives, level, jiffy markers,
box cutters, tape (lots and lots of clear tape), cardboard, foam core, cameras, rubber bands, kleenes, Band-Aids,
zap ties, safety pins, scissors, tape measures... you never know what you might need! Some teams make
can-stacking forms to speed the process and you can see that on some of the Youtube videos.
TEAM REFRESHMENTS
You are welcome and encouraged to bring food and snacks for your team to sustain the herculean efforts of your
team during the competition build days. We are partnering with Save on Meats and the Better Life Foundation to
bring in bag lunches for teams that order in advance. We will provide you with a variety of menu items to choose
for your team orders. They offer an incrediable 1:1 meal program, where for every meal we purchase, they will
create a separate meal and donate it to the downtown east side. Good on you! These must be ordered in
advance, more to follow.

VENUES
THIS PAGE IS A WORK IN PROGRESS!
DETAILS TO FOLLOW IN CAPTAINS BULLETINS
MOVE IN & DELIVERIES
Check dates and times for move in
Teams may bring their own trucks, vans, cars to deliver food to their venues or have their food delivered on
their behalf. If you are brining your own food you MUST communicate with the Food OPS committee (info to
come) as priority is given to HY Louie, GVFB and Edgemont Moving trucks
Loading bays and street level in and out access will be different for each venue. Once your site has been
determined, Team Captains will be sent the specific load in / out details
Teams should bring their own dolly or handcart to move boxes of food.
[email protected] cel 604-830-9792, and Craig Edwards, [email protected] to ensure proper access
and availability. If you order via HY Louie, your food order will be delivered to your build site.
Pallets of food will require pallet jacks and special handling. Pallet jacks are used by trained volunteers
and staff only. This is to prevent ANY damage to the floor.
Team Captains or their designates should check to make sure all their food has been delivered PRIOR to the
build time between 8am and 9am start on April 24th.
Teams will be required to breakdown all cardboard boxes and place in the cardboard recycling boxes as
they build.
All plastic, garbage etc. needs to be cleaned up at the end of each of the Canstruction build days.
EXHIBIT SITES & DETAILS
SITE SELECTION
Organizers determine the team’s location
Sculptures will be located in the exhibit area based on a number of criteria; safety, public access, sculpture type,
configuration, etc.
While organizers do their utmost to accommodate requests, final locations are assigned entirely at
the discretion of the organizers, and moving sites is not allowd unless permission has been granted by the
organizers. No exceptions.
LIGHTING / SPECIAL EFFECTS
Some sites will have only natural lighting as access to electrical outlets varies from site to site and venue to venue
If a team needs electrical service (for special effects like: mini-ights, motors, accent lights, or custom
installations) please advise organizers so that special site allocations can be made early.
15
All special effects and special lighting and extension cords are the responsibility of each team. Approval
from organizers (safety of the public is a real concern) is needed. Team Captain and organizer will work
together to come up with the best options, but be advised, these electrical sites will be available on a first
come first served basis, and are not guaranteed to each team.
BACKDROPS
Teams wishing to create an optional scenic backdrop must provide all structural framework and materials.
It is not possible to fix anything to walls or columns.
Backdrops are considered props and do not factor into the judge’s evaluation of the sculptures. Again, there are
only limited sites where backdrops can be used. Please advise organizers if this is a consideration.
SPECIAL EFFECTS
Teams who incorporate AV, music, smoke machines or other special effects can do so with the understanding that
Canstruction Vancouver cannot guarantee the safety and security of the equipment. While the Canstruction organizing
committee and volunteers will make every effort to keep all the exhibit items secure, we cannot be held responsible for
the liability or loss of any materials or equipment brought by your team. You leave these items on site at your own risk.
Any special effects such as lighting, moving motors, smoke machines etc., must be pre-approved by the organizing
committee and questions will be asked regarding: size of unit, output, electrical needs etc. To get prep approval,
email all specifics to Scott Gray, [email protected] or Michelle Lee, [email protected]
so that it can be forwarded on your behalf to the proper authority. Please allow a minimum of three weeks before the
event for prep approval.
Event volunteers will ensure special effects are activated during all public exhibit times, but are not responsible for
operations. Written instructions are required to provide directions, and contact name and phone numbers must be
provided on these instructions.
DECANSTRUCTION
•
All teams must designate 4 volunteers for decanstruction
•
ALL FOOD at the end of Canstruction is to be placed into food bins supplied by the Food Bank
•
TEAMS MUST remove all props, and non food items PROMPTLY at 5:00pm on Friday, May 8th
16
BRAGGING
RIGHTS!
MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR
PARTICIPATION
Teams have featured their sculptures in their company newsletters,
provincial and national trade publications, as well as in the local
press and social media. It is a good way to not only get more exposure
for your company or school, but also for the event.
Here are some ideas:
Make sure you feature your Canstruction sculpture and team story on your website, or e-newsletters, then
send us a ink so we can feature it on our website or twitter about it. By all of us working together, we can
increase your exposure tremendously!
Make some noise about your participation and get your fellow employees, their friends, families, clients- the
world, to vote for you for the PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD.
Make a time lapse video of your build for your own website and we can put it on ours so it is ready for the next
event.
THIS IS IMPORTANT: Have someone from your team designated as your “spokesperson.” Let us know who it is
and when the media comes calling and wants to talk to someone on your team, we can direct them to the
right person. Make sure you give us their contact information so we can reach them during the event.
Speaking about the media, make sure you let us know about your story. How did you come up with the
theme? Was it hard to build? Have any cantastrophies when you were building it? Are you a new team and
this is your first time? How did you fundraise? The media LOVES these kinds of stories so help us spread the
word.
FACEBOOK- if you tell 10 people about Canstruction... and they tell 10 people... you get the idea!
When we send out our press releases, send them around to your team, and encourage everyone to pass them
on to other colleagues, clients and companies you work for, friends and family.
17
TEAM SIGNAGE
SUBMISSION OF SIGN INFO - WORD DOC.
Every sculpture is given a team sign, which gives the public extensive information about the sculpture’s design
concept, team members and sponsors. These signs are all formatted to a unified professional standard.
FOLLOW the instructions accompanying the Word file exactly
No formatting of the document is permitted, as graphic layout follows a predetermined and consistent format. It
makes our jobs very tough if we have to delete bullets, indents, bolding, columns etc.
DEADLINE for signage is FRIDAY April 10th in order to meet print deadlines.
Any team who does not meet the deadline, or who requires changes to the sign AFTER the cut off date, will be
charged a $50 late fee for rush sign production.
See forms.
