Key Capabilities

Enhanced VSE/power accounting data: CA JARS Resource Accounting for z/VSE
obtains information on z/VSE resource consumption by processing VSE/POWER
accounting records. Supplemental accounting information can be obtained by using
the CA JARS Resource Accounting for z/VSE job accounting interface program, which
calculates additional data not supplied by the IBM supervisor for each job step and
appends that data to the job step execution record created by VSE/POWER. These
additional fields include paging statistics, deactivation time and working set
statistics.


Checkpoint data: The CA JARS Resource Accounting for z/VSE data collection
component can be tailored to create step checkpoint records for long-running jobs
and store them in the CA JARS Resource Accounting for z/VSE account file. The
checkpoint feature prevents loss of accounting data in the event of system failure
and helps CA JARS Resource Accounting for z/VSE produce more accurate utilization
statistics for these applications.

Measured workload reporting tool: Collects system utilization data and produces
an approved Sub-Capacity Report that can be used to support the CA Technologies
usage-based Measured Workload Pricing.

Consolidate data: The CA JARS Resource Accounting for z/VSE data reduction
component performs data validation and reduction. Data can be consolidated from
VSE/POWER records, CA JARS Resource Accounting for z/VSE period files and ICCF,
CA IDMS™ and VM interface files. CA JARS Resource Accounting for z/VSE reformats
records into a common format: the JD62VSE database. When users select PERIOD
processing, CA JARS Resource Accounting for z/VSE automatically organizes the
data into period files.

Data reporting: The CA JARS Resource Accounting for z/VSE data reporting
component consists of the CA JARS Resource Accounting for z/VSE Report Writer,
which executes during the data reduction phase, and the CA JARS Resource
Accounting for z/VSE WIZARD report writer, which reports on files created by data
reduction.

Out-of-the-box reporting: CA JARS Resource Accounting for z/VSE offers several
predefined reports that can be created as part of the daily data reduction
processing.
—
Multiprogramming Activity Analysis (MPA) reports provide an overall view of
system performance over a given time period; e.g., daily or weekly. The
following reports are available:

Daily Performance Summary

Concurrency Graphs

Partition Utilization Graphs

System utilization reports provide an overall picture of activity within the z/VSE
environment. They focus on your installation’s hardware utilization for a
specific time interval. Examples include:
—

CPU Activity Graphs

Computer Utilization Summaries

Resource Utilization Summaries
Detail job or program activity analysis reports highlight specific resource
utilization statistics by job or program name. These reports identify the jobs or
programs that consume the largest percentage of resources in your installation.
Each report is ordered by one of the following resources:


Number of times used

CPU time

EXCPs

Paging

I/O index

CPU page rate
User-defined reports: User-designed reports can display detail, summary and
exception system information. The CA JARS Resource Accounting for z/VSE WIZARD
also can produce ranked record reports, calendar reports and plot reports, which are
graphic representations of numeric values.
A complete set of precoded reports, which produce a wide variety of reports on your
accounting data, is provided on the distribution tape for use with the CA JARS
Resource Accounting for z/VSE WIZARD and the CA JARS Resource Accounting for
z/VSE Report Writer.
Period processing: Period processing is a powerful methodology offered by CA JARS
Resource Accounting for z/VSE to maintain a historical database of your
performance and accounting data. Each daily processing cycle accumulates daily
activity to the period-to-date file. At the end of this processing cycle, typically at the
end of the month, CA JARS Resource Accounting for z/VSE creates an end-of-period
file that can be used for permanent archival purposes. Period processing enables
you to take advantage of the following features:
4
CA JARS Resource Accounting for z/VSE
—
Shift splitting: You can define the beginning of the logical day and the start of
each shift, up to four shifts. Records spanning a shift are physically split, with
all split fields prorated to the amount of elapsed time belonging to each shift.
By splitting records on shift boundaries, data falling within an exact shift and,
therefore, period boundaries are output to the period files.
—
Full day reporting: Period processing automatically produces a daily file that
contains one complete day's data. Extra data that should be reported on the
following day is stored in the period-to-date file and is retrieved and reported
on the following day.
—
One pass processing: The historical file created by period processing eliminates
the need to merge files through extra runs to produce a file containing a
complete period's data.

Associate costs with resources: Accounting records state resource consumption in
physical units like seconds, records and SIOs. CA JARS Resource Accounting for
z/VSE stores accounting information in those units and also supports cost tables
that enable you to associate costs with physical resource units. With cost tables,
you can set up a cost structure that meets your site's unique requirements and
adjust rates within the cost tables to implement a chargeback strategy that best
meets your needs.
