ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD WINNER
40S HYBRID by COLUMBUS YACHTS
In line with the Green approach to yacht building pioneered by Columbus Yachts, a brand of Palumbo Shipyards, the
innovative 40S Hybrid debuted last year at the Monaco Yacht Show. “Sport” indicates the high performance of this
Superyacht equipped with two diesel engines which give a top speed of 23 Knots, with the ability to easily cruise at 18-20
knots. Columbus Yachts is very proud that 40S Hybrid is the first Motor Yacht to be RINA classified with the additional
class notation “Hybrid Propulsion (Y)” along with “Green Star Plus Platinum” and AUT CCS (Y), the latest being another
innovation studied with RINA to fulfil the need of having unmanned machinery spaces, even not having a control room
inside the machinery spaces. The boat is provided with a hybrid system consisting of double means of propulsion and
power generation. Basically an electrical machinery is connected on the main gear box through a PTI/O assuming two
different functions. When main engines are running, the electric motor can take power from the main engines thus
producing electrical power up to 120 kW, in this mode the Diesel generators can be switched off saving fuel consumption
and emission due to Diesel generators. On electric mode, due to extremely efficient hull shapes, main engines can be
turned off and the power from the Diesel generators can be used up to 120 kW to use the electric motors for propulsion
purposes. The available power of 120 kW will allow the boat to sail at 8kn reducing noise, vibration and fuel consumption.
The power is delivered by the generators themselves running on fixed rpm so, not having transition period in speed or
gear variation. This allows to have low SOx and NOx emissions since the emission of these substances depends on the
transition period of thermal motors. It was intentionally chosen not to use batteries for environmental purposes.
The batteries would have been charged by the Diesel generators themselves and then delivered to Electric motors thus
involving a loss of power, that is more fuel consumption and emission. Mr. Giuseppe Palumbo CEO of Palumbo Group
stated after the official announcement: “Palumbo Group is honoured to receive this prestigious award, which is a symbol
of our commitment to building environmentally friendly yachts. From the very beginning of the Columbus Yachts brand,
Palumbo Group has been dedicated to establishing a balance in our new builds, in order to preserve and protect the
environment. The 40S Hybrid is now the proud holder of this award, which represents the hard work of our naval architect
and technical team who built this state of the art yacht, and equipped her with the most advanced technology on the
market. As CEO of Palumbo Group, I am particularly proud of our achievement. I was personally involved in the
construction phase from the outset, and I had the pleasure of following the entire construction first-hand. I would like to
take this opportunity to highlight the important support that we received from Sergio Cutolo of Hydro Tec, as I shared in
the challenges faced throughout this project to achieve this ambitious goal. The UIM’s decision to grant us this award is a
great recognition for all of the professionals involved in building the 40S Hybrid. This yacht is a clear statement of what
yachting means to us, and I am confident that she will become an important reference for yacht-building with a low
environmental impact in the future. In my opinion the 40S Hybrid represents a vital difference in the superyacht market as
we, ahead of our competitors, have succeeded in striking a balance between aesthetic yacht design and high
performance, coupled with the guarantee of low emission levels.”
Special Mention for “GREENING THE SPORT” to:
VRIPACK - V20 Solar Boat
The V20 is the world’s first One Design Solar Racer which is solely driven by the energy created from the sun. The V20 is
a so called Hydro Foiling WIG vessel. The adjustable hydro foils carry her hull out of the water and the NACA shape of the
deck creates a Wing in Ground (WIG) effect creating additional lift. The goal for all this is to reduce the natural resistances
to a minimum allowing the Solar Power to be used for pure speed followed by pleasure and an ear to ear smile. The V20
is a light weight composite vessel with solar cells which also has the possibility to stall the sun energy in her Lithium Ion
batteries or convert this energy directly to the propeller. A sophisticated battery management system assists the pilot to
determine what the ideal speed is. With sufficient energy yield it is possible to cruise 100% on the sun and even recharge
the battery at the same time. The boat is driven by an electro motor which powers the propeller allowing the V20 to fly up
to a speed around the 30 km p/h. In a World Wide Class several V20s will be challenging each other and the elements in
an International race circuit. The boats in the V20 class are all identical except for a few strategic elements.
Bart Bouwhuis and Marnix Hoekstra, directors of Vripack, explain; “Solar energy is one of the most important essentials in
the puzzle towards a sustainable economy. The V20 Solar Grand Prix are there to promote the ultimate synergy of nature,
motion and innovation within the yachting industry. The constant focus on expertise from the fields of innovation and
scientific developments is important to Vripack in order to stay focused within the delivery of high quality design,
architecture and engineering. The V20 is an excellent way to bring our knowledge of Solar Racing to the World in our
typical Holistic approach as we don’t simply design boats we engineer fantasies. Solar energy is an important part of all life
processes and has the potential to allow technology and nature to co-exist peacefully. In the future, solar energy may well
be a primary form of energy which could lead to a clean environment and thus a healthier world.”

Special Mention for "INNOVATION" to:
VSY - COMPUTING SUSTAINABILITY IN THE YACHTING SECTOR
VSY technology and innovation work table: a structured program with the aim of developing a new cost/benefit indicator
to implement sustainable governance in the sector. Although for years under discussion among scholars and policy
makers, sustainable development has recently assumed particular importance in the value system of the yachting
industry. To date there is no specific and organic legal framework, but VSY can observe a number of measures taken by
the European Union aimed at protecting natural resources. Through the program approved by European Commission in
2010 and called The EU strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, the EU suggests concrete measures that
set new targets for 2020 in terms of a greener and more competitive economy, energy efficiency etc. The EU strategy
aims to direct the European towards a model of sustainable economic development and low CO2 emissions through a
wide range of tools and rules. The actions undertaken by the European Union as a whole promote the dissemination of
the concept of eco-design in all categories of business, stimulating the adoption of innovative behaviour, of systems.
VSY’s “Technologies and Innovations Worktable” – started in 2013 with the scientific support of Eulabor Institute and the
University of Bologna – is a Computational Sustainability model based program and has its focus on developing
mathematical methods for decision making processes concerning the management and allocation of resources in order to
help solve some of the most challenging problems related to sustainability. Computational Sustainability is an
interdisciplinary field that aims to apply techniques from computer science, information science, operations research,
applied mathematics, and statistics for balancing environmental, economic, and societal needs for sustainable
development. VSY is making a great effort to achieve this target and provide the yachting industry with this scientific
support because it could facilitate in a concrete way the access to sustainable-oriented policies in the yachting sector.
Cristiana Longarini, VSY Director, stated: “At VSY we believe that competitive success will ultimately be based on the
ability to create yachts that are highly technological in content and design (customizing accessories and high
performance) as well as eco-friendly. Our aim is to be part of the solution by the Computing Sustainability Program.
We thank UIM for this award for Innovation and this great opportunity to present our work to the business community and
to all the people who love sea and its value.”
Special Mention for "ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFIT” to:
Azimut Benetti Group
MULTI-SITE CERTIFICATION
Started in Avigliana in October 2009, and ended in November 2013 in Livorno, the procedure for the ‘BS OHSAS 18001’
certification has involved eleven different sites, all belonging to Azimut|Benetti Group. On December 2nd RINA Technical
Committee for Safety authorized the new OHSAS 18001:2007 certificate release for Livorno’s site, thereby stating the
implementation, along with the applicable laws, of an accurate control system regarding the workers’ Health and Security
and the relevant environment. This last step brings to eleven the number of Group’s detachments to have obtained such
a qualification, thus making Azimut|Benetti the first and unique yacht builder in the world to have gained a multi-site
certification. With this achievement Azimut|Benetti is once more focusing on social responsibility and environmental
issues strongly believing that workers’ health and safety represent an essential requirement and therefore any action
taken to support employees is not to be seen as a burden but as a relevant investment. Such investments have to be
aimed at creating a company’s culture extremely focused on health and safety, according to the idea that “only the ones
who have a culture of safety can build safe yachts”.
Statement by Francesco Ansalone, Azimut|Benetti Group Marketing Director: “This acknowledgment makes us very
proud as it demonstrates our commitment on the issues of environment and safety. Azimut|Benetti is the first and unique
yacht builder in the world to have gained a multi-site certification. We strongly believe that such investments are aimed at
creating a company’s culture extremely focused on health and safety, according to the idea that “only the ones who have
a culture of safety can build safe yachts.”
