Shilpa Shukla
Ever since the time Shilpa Shukla
stepped in Bollywood, she has always
been appreciated for her choice of roles
and the dedication and hard work with
which she approaches her every role.
She is someone who has never been
in the news for any wrong reason. It’s
only her films and her performance in
the films which speaks volumes for the
person that she is. After having done
a bold role in the hit film B.A. Pass,
she is now all set to entertain everyone
with her light hearted
role in the upcoming
film Crazy Kukkad
Family.
Shilpa, what’s your role
in the upcoming Crazy
Kukkad Family. I am the only daughter
in the family. I have
three brothers she is a
mad character. Even
though she is a grown
up adult, her mental
age is that of 13 years.
Her only dream of a
lifetime was to become a Miss India.
But because of sibling rivalry, her
brother came in between her and her
Miss India dreams, which results in
her dream being shattered, which also
ends up her being married in such an
early age. Then, she nurtures of being
a ‘Mrs. India’. She is ready to fight her
way through anyone in order to get her
share in the property. She is a ‘branded’
person so to speak. If she had her
way, then, she wouldn’t have spared a
second thought before indulging into
top notch foreign brands. But since she

doesn’t have the required amount, she
lands up buying the cheap look a likes
of such branded stuff. What made you say yes to the film? I simply followed the saying ‘After a
tragedy there comes a comedy. After
the success of B.A. Pass, I got the offer
for Crazy Kukkad Family. The timing
just couldn’t have been more apt than
this. It’s one of the finest scripts I have
heard in the recent times. I always
wanted to do a comedy role for a really
long time. That’s why
I simply accepted this
role. How important is the
film’s script to you? The script is as
important as the film’s
director to me and the
team with which I am
working with. Was signing up for Crazy Kukkad Family a very
conscious decision to
break the serious B. A.
Pass mould? Not at all. It was a case of being at
the right place at the right time, I
was celebrating the success of B. A.
Pass and my number was taken by
someone at Prakashji’s office. And
then, I came here and the rest is history.
And the fact remained that this role
came from ‘Prakash Jha Productions’.
We all know that there is credibility
that is always attached to his name. He
will never endorse something that is
half baked or a story that doesn’t need

last films we remember
watching
her
in
were Action Replayy,
Guzaarish and Robot, all in 2010.
Five years and valid reasons to stay
away, beginning with Aaradhyaa,
her daughter. So would we call this a
genuine comeback?
In 2014, we also had Madhuri Dixit in
the twin flops, Dedh Ishqiya and Gulaab
Gang, Rekha in the disastrous Super
Nani (after Sadiyaan in 2010) and
Govinda with his
sterling performances
in Kill Dil and Happy
Ending. Maybe, we
could just add Preity
Zinta in that cameo in
the latter film. So the basic question
is: What is a
comeback? In
Hindi
film
parlance, dictionary
meanings have little relevance.
Comebacks, says bollywood trade
analyst Vinod Mirani, are a loose way
of interpreting a long and probably
atypical gap between two films of any
artiste. A comeback, according to him, should
ideally define the reappearing of an
artiste in a different form. Amitabh
Bachchan in Mohabbatein, and the
second innings of Rishi Kapoor and
Mithun Chakraborty are what he would
call comebacks. “They came back as
character artistes,” he explains. “Of
course, Bachchan had films in which he
was solo hero, but very few like Cheeni
Kum fairly worked.
In the case of
Rishi Kapoor, his
only solo film Do
Dooni Chaar was
acclaimed but flopped
miserably.” The first and most successful artiste in
this category in the last four decades
was, however, Dilip Kumar, who
experimented first with a father’s role
in Bairaag (1976) while he also “was
his twin sons” (a triple role), moving
on to Kranti (1981), which along with Shakti and Vidhaata the following
year consolidated him as a ‘senior’
protagonist, who later
had triumphs like Karma and Saudagar. Shammi
Kapoor
shifted due to health
reasons to character
roles; he had become
obese
thanks
to
steroids and forced
inactivity after knee
ailments caused by
frenetic
on-screen
jumps and dances! with his debut
directorial Manoranjan (1974). He had
a gradual growth as a character actor
in his second innings with Parvarish,
Vidhaata, Prem Rog, Betaab, Hero,
Hukumat and more all the way till the
early millennium. Oddly enough, his last and delayed film
as a hero, Chhote Sarkar (that too in
a dual role) released in the same year
as Manoranjan! His elder brother Raj
Kapoor and his friend Rajendra Kumar
were not so lucky - besides erratic

This year you have three major releases Baby, Main Gabbar and Brothers.
These are all action-oriented films. Have
you made a conscious decision to move
away from comedy for a while? It’s not a conscious or deliberate act;
it’s just the path I am on right now. I
never turn my back on any genre, I just
have some very important projects that
are close to my heart right now & are
adventurous roles to play in the times
we live in today. I feel I need to get my
hands dirty for a while, my blood is
pumping thick and hard right now for
real life action, so I’m giving it to my
fans. Baby is a very
different style of
cinema from the
films that you’ve
done recently.
How much did
you have to
work on your
acting style to
accommodate the different demands of
this script? I agree it is very different in many
aspects, but I think people forget just
how many different genres of films I
take on annually!! In the last two years
I have made at least 3 serious thrillers,
3 family comedies, 1 spoof, and don’t
forget, I also played God. My acting
style is constantly modified, so to slip
into Neeraj Pandeys Secret Service
character was just another example of
how much I love my job. You seem to be craving to spread your
wings? It’s a need for versatility. I am what
my directors need me to be. I do as

I’m told, after all these years. Acting
isn’t something you work on now, but
perfecting ones craft is never ending, as
long as actors do as they are told. The
magic in fact lies with what the director
can get out of you, not the other way
around. Most of the time you’ve worked with
established heroines in your films. But
in Baby you’ve worked with a relative
newcomer Tapsee Pannu. What was it
like to face the camera with a less experienced co-star? One shouldn’t judge a hero or heroine
by experience alone. I’ve been blown
away
with
many a first
time performer
over the years,
not just the
veterans,
so
to share the
screen
with
Tapsee was as
rewarding as if
she had been on our screens for years.
She trained well for this film and even
with her inexperience she has shown
a powerful female side in a very male
orientated film, so hats off to her. If
all of us leading men worked with the
same talented heroines over and over
again, how would our industry ever
grow? No-one knows who the next
‘Kareena Kapoor Khan’ or ‘Katrina
Kaif’ will be. It’s my duty to give back
to this industry what was given to me. The shooting of Baby took you to various
unexplored parts of the world. Which location did you enjoy the most, and why? You see now that’s not such an easy

What a year Alia Bhatt has had!
Beginning with a sterling performance

Sharma Ki Dulhaniya in 2014. Right
after a busy year, 2015 will be a stressbuster for the young star as she has shot
only for one film Shandaar as of now.
Are you looking forward to the awards
for Highway this year? Of course, I want the awards. I don’t
know if I am going to get them. But
honestly, I feel I’ve had a really blessed
year. Recently, I was at an event in the
college. And they were dancing to my
song. That brought tears to my eyes.
That was my biggest
high. So much happening to
your career so suddenly!
Was it too much to handle? My fear is not that. My
fear is what if it all goes
away? What if one day
I am not busy at all? I
like this feeling of being constantly
busy. I don’t want to ever get up with
the feeling that I’ve nothing to look
forward to. I like the rush of adrenaline
that I feel every day. It isn’t as if I don’t
get time to spend with my family and
friends. It’s just been two years for
me in the film industry. I am enjoying
myself. I should be doing more, not
less. Tell us about your films in 2015? I’ve shot for just one film this year. So,
I’ll have just one release next year. And
I am okay with that. It just happened
that way. Do you enjoy traveling for shooting? February 2015
I am an inquisitive and excited traveler,
so... I do like to take time off to travel
independent of work. And I will take
time off to take a holiday every year.
That’s a promise I made to myself.
And visit a place I’ve not seen. The
experiences that you create for yourself
help you to grow as a person. I need
those experiences to feed on. I am happy
working hard and taking an annual
holiday. And of course, my mom joins
me for my shootings whenever she can. Your mom is directing a film with other
actors. Does that make you jealous? Why should it make me jealous? I am
just so excited that she is directing a
film again. This film has
no role suitable for me.
I wouldn’t like to be in
it just for the heck of it.
In our family, it doesn’t
work that way. I still
haven’t worked with
my father’s production
house. In 2014, you did a short
film with Vikas Bahl about the issue of
women’s safety. Has being an actor made
you more conscious of these issues? Most definitely. I am constantly hanging
around with people who talk about these
issues. My knowledge may be limited.
But there is a hunger to discover more
about life. I’ve inherited this hunger
from my family. If I am a curious soul,
the credit goes to my parents and my
sister Shaheen. Are you, by nature, a happy person? I’ve a fear of being happy. Because,
I fear grief is around the corner. I am
Piscean. And I am a complete drama

Shamitabh... Amitabh
In Shamitabh you are playing a raging
drunken man. How difficult was it for you
to play the character? As difficult as playing a Don or doing
a Deewaar or an Alzheimer stricken
character from Black. One does not
necessarily have to consume alcohol
to be intoxicated. Life itself is an
intoxication!
In Shamitabh you talk about teaming up
with others to make a complete entity. Do
you believe every human being needs help
to be complete? Every human being may
not necessarily need
help to be complete. But
if it came it would be
most welcome,provided
it is positive in nature.
In Shamitabh it certainly
becomes a positive force. What was it like working
with Balki for the third
time? Was your character
in Shamitabh as challenging, and challenged, as the one in Paa?
For me my work is the most enjoyable and
comforting experience. Challenges are
there in each project that I have done and
shall continue to be so. Shamitabh has
been as challenging as Paa or any other
that I have worked in. And working with
Balki is a joy. What was it like sharing screen space with
Dhanush and Akshara, both your unabashed fans? When the camera starts is not relatable
to fan worship or any other kind of
worship that you imagine comes my
way. It does not. When the director
shouts ‘action’, we start to act. Mother,
father, brother, sister, uncle, grandfather,

fan worshipper, or any other, gets thrown
out of the window. Or the set in this case! In Shamitabh you’ve collaborated for the
2nd time with the great Ilayaraja? How
was that experience? His genius is unmatched. I can only
consider myself to be blessed and
truly fortunate that I have had two
opportunities to work with him. You’ve sung for composers as varied as
Rajesh Roshan, Shiv-Hari, Aadesh Shrivasava and Vishal Bhardwaj. Which of these
composers have been the
most challenging to work

question, for I fell in love with the
people of Nepal, but was wowed with
the beauty of the streets in Istanbul, and
then again I was blown away with the
serenity of the Abu Dhabi desert. So
I’m just going to say, it’s been a journey
and a half, and I like my journeys. Since you’ve done an important film in
terrorism, let me ask what is your take
on the global menace of terrorism? My take on terrorism is as gutwrenching obvious as it is to everyone
else on this planet. It breaks my heart; it
breaks homes, cities, lives, families and
countries. But it’s how we handle it that
changes the outcome
of any attack. I think
as long as we do not
cave in, and break
down in the eyes
of terrorists; their
heinous
inhuman
actions alone are
almost immediately
half-destroyed. As responsible global citizens how can we
fight terrorism? This is where I think the media needs to
be careful that they don’t sensationalize
terrorism. We shouldn’t give them the
time of day or the glory they are so
craving for. As much as we need to be
told what is going on in the world and
on our streets, I’ve always thought, if it
was never televised or spoken of, would
they still attack knowing the world will
not even come to know of their attempts
of brutal sadistic murder? There be no
fears. Something to think about maybe. And yet you’re drawing attention to terror and terrorism by being in a film
like Baby? True, but we have deliberately portrayed

the whole situation to uncover the
bravery of the men that fight terrorism
behind closed doors. These are fighters
that the world doesn’t even know
about. Instead of glorifying the bad
guys, we have made people remember
the silent good guys, because it’s they
who deserve the attention and glory,
only them. Moving away from politics, how do you
deal with long periods of shooting outside the country when you can’t meet
your wife and children? Well, basically I am thankful for the
inventions of commercial planes and
large hotel suites. Whenever it feels like
it’s been too long or I
need my family and
they’re missing me,
then I fly them out to
wherever I am. We
don’t need to suffer,
we have the means
and the money and
the staff to help us be
the family we need
to be in any corner of the world. I’m
grateful for this luxury of being able to
bring my family close to me whenever I
am far away, otherwise yes it would be
hard. Luckily I shoot films quickly so
I’m never on an outdoor for very long
anymore anyway. Baby is your second film with Neeraj
Pandey. What sort of a growth have you
seen in him and in yourself since Special
26? The growth that I’ve seen and felt more
than anything is purely the respect and
admiration we have for each other. No
matter how long we have been working
in this industry, professional growth is

DREAM PALACE
Once, King Krishnadev Rai saw a
strange palace in his dream. Its walls
were made of multi colored flushed
stones which reflected so much light
that the palace looked bathed in
daylight. It was a sort of a magic palace.
The King was so bowled over by the
dream palace that for days he only
talked of that palace and its wonders.
He announced that anyone making him
such palace will get a reward of 25000
gold coins.
The dreams can’t be true, everyone
knew that but no one dared to
tell it to the’ King.
Then,
the
King
called a meeting
of the builders
and artisans of
the kingdom and
revealed to them
his dream palace
and wanted them to
build it. Some sincere
building specialists bluntly
told the King that such a palace was a
pipe dream. The King ignored them.
Some dishonest builders tried to cash
in on the madness of the King. They
assured the King that such a palace
was possible. They took a lot of money
from the King for planning the palace.
No minister or courtiers were interested
in intervening for fear of the wrath
of the King. Although all of them
wanted that loot of the state treasury
to stop. Tenalirama could have done
something about it but he had gone on
a holiday. The minister decided to wait
for Tenalirama. One day, the King was
sitting in the court. An old man entered

the court wailing and beating his chest,
“I beg you, O King! This poor man has
been robbed”
“What injustice?” the King asked.
“Who has robbed you, old man! You
just tell me what has happened.”
“I am ruined, O Lord,” the old man
wailed and sobbed, “The state has
stolen my life’s savings. Now I have
nothing. What will happen to my
children and my poor wife?”
“State? Do you mean some corrupt
officials have taken away your money
or property?” the King was red faced.
“But, officials alone are, not to
be blamed.”
The King was surprised,
“Then who?”
“O
Lord!
If
you give me
protection from
any punishment
because of what I
reveal, then I will
tell you.”
“Speak up. Don’t fear.
You have my blanket protection.”
Your, Majesty! It, happened last night.
I was sleeping, saw a dream that you
walked into my house accompanied
by ministers and soldiers. And then
you got the box which contained my
earnings of entire life lifted and taken
away.”
“Are you mad? Did you say I got your
treasure box lifted away in your dream?
Are dreams ever true, crazy man?”
You are right. Dreams are not true. Be
it my dream or your dream palace. It is
madness to believe in them.

Ganga finds it difficult to come out of the
sinister trap. He can’t go back to society,
like the dacoits of Jis Desh Mein Ganga
Behti Hai. Jumna, wary of
her companion, runs up
to the police station, and
gets a fatal injury in the
head. She dies along with the child in her
womb, like Anita does in Deewar. After
Jumna’ s death, it’s all over with Ganga.
Dilip Kumar’s restrained acting in such
moments of emotional crises looks
phenomenal again and again; in Naya
Daur, now, and later in Shakti (1982),
where he shoots his rebel son. While
the brothers fight one upholding law and
the other for preservation of his identity
as a bandit and outcast it’s all over with
the protagonist. But, this fight is set in
a redeeming contrast when we see that
Munimji too fights with the zamindar who
wants to escape. This makes the villain’s
position in this film rather complex,
if not slightly bizarre. It fore shadows
what we’ll see in the seventies when the
villains fight between them to take charge
of the underworld operation. Munimji
shouts that the villainous zamindar is
a rotten criminal, and has done all the
damage. Ganga, enraged kills the villain
and by making this fatal choice, loses his
chance to go back to law.
Ganga, resting on the shoulder of his
brother, murmurs: “Main ghar aya,
Munna.” This suggestion of having a
roof, a house to find shelter in, runs as a
motif in Ganga Jumna. This is a natural
consequence of having the dacoits,
the social outcasts, at the center of the
narrative. Still, the villains were looking
for new engagements and meeting fresh
challenges. One noticeable change, was
found in his dress. Instead of dhoti-kurta,
he’s now clad in suits and ties, a feature
that gives him the kind of niche he was
seeking to intimidate the hero. He speaks

English and is westernized in manners.
This new feature works admirably with
the arrival of Pran on the scene. The
heroine, not probably liking this getup of the villain, knots
his tie tighter in order to
nearly throttle him, as it
happens in Bluff Master.
The decade, seen from this point of view,
actually opens with China Town, released
in 1962. It is a dark film, matched by
black and white photography, showing
assertively that we have left behind the
idealist fifties, at least the first half of it.
Incredibly, the release date of this film
coincides with the Chinese attack on
India, and significantly also, China Town
appears to be a predecessor film of Don,
made in the turbulent seventies. Shammi
Kapoor plays a double role in China
Town, those of Mike and Shekhar, the twin
brothers, estranged from childhood. Mike
is a China Town gangster, while Shekhar
a Darjeeling based hotel singer. There are
songs in this film, but not anything like
the “Khaike Pan Banaraswalla” number,
followed by dance under an addled
state due to bhaang; in which the hero
is later joined by the heroine and a pot
bellied man. Nothing like this happens in
China Town that shows the underworld
operation with uncanny precision and
stark cynicism.
For a moment, one has the impression that
he is witnessing a film of the seventies.
Shammi Kapoor, playing Mike, puts up
a cocky face, and dismisses everything
unpleasant with a flick of his finger.
Like Don, Shekhar is asked by the
police inspector, investigating into the
crime operations of the underworld,
to impersonate the dangerous Mike so
long as he’s in police custody. Before
this, there are a few funny incidents in
Darjeeling, particularly those in which
Shekhar confronts the wayward father

How did you get into showbiz? I always wanted to get into showbiz
ever since my childhood. And it’s
only because of my passion towards
showbiz; I landed up doing the Design
and Drama course from National
School of Drama, New Delhi. I then
got a break as a writer in the TV series
called ‘Swaraj’ by Manju Singh. My
basic objective was to get into film
making with a few names on my list,
which included Prakash Jha. And to my
good fortunes, I got an opportunity of
a lifetime to work with him very soon. With your ability to sing, dance, music,
act…will it be right to
say that, after the late
Kishore Kumar, Bollywood seems to have
found its next all-rounder in ‘Swanand Kirkire’? Kishoreda was, is and
will always be a legend
in whatever he did. It
won’t be right to call
me as a next Kishore
Kumar. But yes, you
can always call me as a Kishore Kumar
follower. In a nutshell, what’s your film Crazy
Kukkad Family all about? It’s a comedy of a dismantled family
who come together for their father’s

understanding
the
importance of values. What’s your character in the film and
what was the brief that was given to you? My role is that of a ‘cunningly
shrewdest’ eldest brother who is a
‘jugaadu’ and who doesn’t bother about
any relationship because he is very
selfish by nature and for whom, money

is everything. But, what’s striking
about this person is that, despite having
all these traits, he is the most stupid
person in the family and he is not aware
of this fact! Did you take your time to say yes to the
role or you took time to say yes? Whatever roles I have done so far were
only for the sake of friendship. But
this time round, even though I did not
know who Ritesh Menon was, the very
name of Prakash Jha productions was
enough for me to say yes to the film.
To tell you the fact, Initially, I was
amazed when I heard the length of the
role. My first reaction
to Ritesh was that to
please go and speak to
Prakashji about me. To
my shock, he said that
Prakashji is aware of
this and he too is very
excited about me doing
this role in the film.
When I read the script,
I realized that it was a
mammoth task in front
of me. Was there any kind of homework did you
do for the role? There was no homework as such that
I did. I was only bothered about the
way I will look on screen. But Ritesh
convinced me that he wanted me to
look raw and the way I look in real life. Were there any ‘crazy’ moments while
shooting the film? There were many crazy moments
during the shoot. Let me tell you what
happened on the third day of the shoot.

shifts to Calcutta and the identity of Mike
is revealed to Shekhar by his mother,
everything turns gloomy and dark. The
way Mike refuses to listen to his crying
mother, whom he hasn’t seen since
boyhood, could hardly be imagined in the
fifties and sixties. China Town is indeed a
surprise package of the early sixties.
This brings Madan Puri, the real
dangerous villain, into action. Puri plays
Joseph Wong in this film. The way he
plays his role makes it obvious that this
man is going to create troubles, as he
does in Deewar. Madan Puri in China
Town looks like preparing himself for
playing the bigger roles. Yet, China
Town can by no stretch of imagination
be called a mini rehearsal of Puri’s future
shaping as a villain, since he’s already
one in this film. That is another important
point about China Town as a film. It is as
if this film has all the claims of looking
like a blueprint of the Chinese attack to
destabilize India.
Wong and the menacing Ching Lee (played
by M. B. Shetty) kidnap Mike when he
is a boy to serve their interest, mainly
that of carrying out the risky underworld
activities. In keeping with the time, these
gangsters are not as fearless and arrogant
as they will look in the seventies. They
are afraid of police raids, adopt secretive
measures to hoodwink the police, and
even pretend to be law abiding people.
But, in spite of the dictates of time, China
Town manages to present characters like
Wong and Lee, replicating what possibly
was really happening at the time in the
China Town of Calcutta. In this sense,
China Town as a film triumphs over its
limitations in a way that many films of
the sixties couldn’t. Shakti Samanta, the
producer and director of the film, was a
Bengali, and he knew well the real life
situations of the locality of China Town

that was then, and still now, located in the
eastern part of the city of Kolkata. This
makes the film look very convincing as it
was drawn from real life experience. The
underworld operations in China Town
are carried out on the pretext of running
a hotel. And, mind you, this happened
quite early in the history of cinema, even
before the celebrated director Roman
Polanski made his classic under the same
title in 1974. Chinatown by Polanski is
an American neo-noir film, part mystery
and part psychological drama, and was
nominated for 11 Academy Awards.
Shakti Samanta’s Hindi film too has
its merits. It created a stir when it was
released. The Rafi number “Bar Bar
Dekho” went on to become a classic. The
hotel entertainments of China Town bring
the lusty Helen on to the screen, as if she
were stepping out to do an item number
of the seventies when ritzy hotels would
spring up in cities. Helen, playing Suzie
in China Town, strongly anticipates the
arrival of Teza’s Mona Darling in Zanjeer.
For the moment, Suzie is actually Joseph
Wong’s woman, though she loves Mike,
the gangster, who undertakes the difficult
operations under instructions from Wong.
China Town, for all these reasons, appears
to be a very important film of the sixties.
It catches the mood of disillusionment of
the late fifties and is more in tune with the
crime motif of “Dev noir” films. Shammi
Kapoor looks like emulating Dev
Anand, though after this he becomes the
rollicking boisterous star of the decade
as he’s known to be, facing Pran. He is
no longer Mike, only Shekhar. Probably,
Shammi Kapoor could play Mike when
he was facing Madan Puri, but he
couldn’t do so while facing Pran, since
Pran was an older and smarter guy, and
more treacherous as a villain than Madan
Puri is in China Town.

I think it’s bad to have expectations.
I believe expectations come with a
lot of pressure and that’s not cool. On
the other hand, with R Balki at the
top of this project, I am assured that
everything in this film will be good,
and great quality cinema-wise. People
may or may not like the film, that
will be their personal choice, but I am
assured that Akshara couldn’t have had
a better debut. You have seen Balki. He
is not one of those runof-the-mill filmmakers
who will make just
about anything. He
makes quality cinema
and that’s why stalwarts
agree to be a part of his
projects. That’s also
why all his films have
been super hit in the
past and been loved by
critics as well.
So you believe that he is
the best launch pad for
your daughter.
Not just for Akshara.
For any actor, Balki is the director for
any actor. Period! Also when it’s your

jobs, a group of street children, Munna,
Pakya, Tillu, Harish and Ganga live their
life in peace. Munna comes across a

she later takes Munna to a hotel where

and you ended up laughing on screen? That was such a ridiculous scene in
Dulal Guha’s Milan Ki Raat. I had to
fall at the bedside and weep. I shouldn’t
have spoken about it. Sanjeev Kumar
taught me to be convincing in whatever
I did. He’d say ‘Don’t argue. Just say
your lines. I’ve to go home.’ I haven’t
seen Milan Ki Raat on television or
anywhere. So many of our films have

Guarding Against Another ‘Jinx’ ...
The film industry anticipates bad luck. It
scours through gossip, weird opinions,
comments of strangers, and, of course,
consults astrologers and numerologists
and fakirs and Dabas to reassure itself
that bad luck is not hiding behind a lamp
post or door of the studio floor to pounce
on it. Like the matka players of yore, it
takes random words heard or read all too
seriously. It reads portents where there are
none. It sees omens where the Almighty
might not have placed any. This may
not have much to do with individuals.
Filmmaking is so speculative that almost
every person playing the game believes
in superstition; after all, success of a
film like Fukrey is as inexplicable as the
failure of Happy Ending, right?’
No, that may not be true. The disastrous
fate of Happy Ending has, for the
moment, an explanation just like the
success of Fukrey may still be explicable.
Apparently, Happy Ending was destined
to flop because it was released in the
third week of November. The industry
has done deep analysis and has arrived
at the conclusion that all films released
in the third week of November down
the years, at least till 2003, have always
flopped. Prominent among these films are
Gori Tere Pyaar Mein! (2013), Guzaarish
(2010), Kurbaan (2009), Yuvraaj (2008)
and Goal (2007).
The purported jinx on release dates is a
favorite in the film industry. It jumps from
month to month depending on which
bad and unentertaining films have been
released during those phases in the past

when films are expected to flop - never
mind that Bhaag Milkha Bhaag managed
to surprise everybody in recent years
by commanding a huge opening and
ultimately racing to success, even though
released during Ramzan. But they don’t
count when the thrust of arguments is to
generate fear among filmmakers against
certain dates.
Now, the discovery of a new
jinx will make filmmakers
think ten times when
considering a November
release. See it from Karan
Johar’s perspective. Two of
his major releases, Kurbaan
and Gori
Tere pyaar Mein, have
succumbed to the ill-luck of
November third week release. Would he
dare to release another film during this
week in the years to come? And if Karan
won’t, which producer will dare?
Considering the fact that about 85 per
cent of Hindi films flop each year, there
must surely be many other dates or weeks
when releases haven’t done too well over
the years. It ought not to be difficult to
dig out similar statistics and create a lot
more other ‘jinxed’ weeks, reducing the
industry to about 15-20 weeks a year
when it is auspicious to release films. Of
course, these auspicious dates will keep
decreasing as and when films flop, which,
by law of averages, they are certain to do.
It might just be a better option to make
good films and release them at the most
appropriate or available date. If the film
is liked, it will run; if it is not, it will
flop. What’s the big deal about jinx or
non jinx? There are two views on bad
luck, one, superstitious, and the other,

practical. One says, walking under a
ladder is bad luck while the other says,
bad luck is walking under a ladder if it
falls on you. Choose.
Time For Reinvention?
Whether it is age or audience fatigue,
actors are often pushed to a point where
the only sensible course open to them
is reinvention of their screen persona.
Amitabh Bachchan, for instance, reached

There are at least two lead
stars currently, who need a
change of image and orientation, though,
perhaps, not drastic as the one Bachchan
was forced to go in for. Saif Ali Khan
has been floundering in recent films. His
role in Humshakals was as ridiculous as
the film itself, and he should never have
attempted it. It was at total variance to
his image and was too silly for a hero
of his calibre. But his other films like
Happy Ending, Agent Vinod and Bullett
Raja haven’t done well either. Though
he still looks good, Saif no longer fits
into the young hero slot and he needs to
do a subtle shift to slightly older, more
mature, lead roles. Buffoonery doesn’t
suit him and he needs to search out
roles that complement the suave and
sophisticated image that he has built over
the years. He has already shown that
he can tackle characters like the one he
played in Omkara with supreme ease, so
a little experimentation would help him
go a long way in his career.

identity. It’s difficult to keep Gajendra
longer in the dark.
Ram, in course of his wanderings, finds
shelter in Shyam’s house in the village,
while Shyam is mistaken for Ram in
the rich house of the city. Shyam, a
smarter guy, beats Gajendra mercilessly,
something that takes everyone by
surprise. Finally, Gajendra unravels the
mystery of the twin brothers, keeps Ram
in his custody in a godown, and beats him
severely for having the property written
in his name. Gajendra tells the police that
Shyam has murdered Ram, and is staying
in the house by using the look alike
image of his brother. Shyam escapes
from prison and comes to know that Ram
is his brother. The lost parents of Shyam
is narrated by his surrogate mother. The
role of Gajendra is played with great
menace by Pran. There are moments in
the film when he looks threatening, like
when he throws the birthday cake of his
daughter away, and whips the innocent
Ram, causing a dent in his psyche. One
important feature of this film is that here
the villain not only returns to his fold,
but he’s also shown apologizing for his

misdeeds. This is because the structure
of family as a homogenous entity is
preserved in this film, The villain too
endorses feudal values and stays loyal
to them. However, things start looking
favorable for the villain two years later.
Raj Khosla, the director of Kala Pani,
later made Do Raaste, a family drama that
drew heavily on the values demonstrated
in the Ramayana. Released in 1969.
The villain’s function in Do Raaste is
taken over by the housewife (Bindu in a
major role), who instigates her husband
Birjuprasad (Prem Chopra) against the
family. She is contrasted with her good
sister Rina, played by Mumtaz. The
family accepts the legal marriage of
Birju, though on the whole they want
to retain traditional values. This sets
the theme of the film in motion. As it
happens in Junglee, the photo of the dead
father becomes a subject of debate and
adulation. In Do Raaste, it takes on an
ugly turn. The evil housewife, spurred on
by vengeance, removes the photo from
the wall of the room allotted to her. Birju
prasad questions the values stuck to by
his idealist elder brother Navendu (Balraj
Sahni in a memorable
role again), and later
leaves
the
family.
Toward the end, Birju
realizes his mistake and

by his wife in disrupting
the peace and stability of

professionals and as individuals, Uttam
and Suchitra were very aware of their
image and status.
Yet, however much Uttam and Suchitra
tried to retain their privacy, they were
inexplicably linked together in the
imagination of their fans and by the
press. Local magazines circulated
stories about their off-screen romance,
even when neither of them bothered to
either deny or confirm these rumors.
That Suchitra was passing through
troubled times in her marriage might
have added grist to the mill. According
to studio gossip, Uttam had proposed to
Suchitra several times, but she did not
accept his proposal since she believed
in the sanctity of marriage and was
aware of her standing in society.
The playful side to their relationship
clearly visible and indicative of a
special chemistry didn’t help quell
rumours either. Uttam was one of the
few people who had the privilege of
calling Suchitra by her real name Roma.
They also endearingly addressed each
other as ‘tui’ (you).
Apparently Suchitra, who called
herself Uttam’s Priyo Bandhobi, would
often visit him both at home and in the
studios. Like lovers they would bicker
with each other about their roles,
have tiffs both dramatic and personal,
and even cajole each other into doing
things that others could never make
them do. Co-actors, technicians and
directors, gossiped about the close
relationship that blossomed between
U ttam and Suchitra. The two were
known to constantly keep each other
company in their make-up vans. In
fact, many studio hands spoke of how

the two went out for drives together
if they were shooting in adjacent
locations. Visiting each other on the
sets or sharing food between shots was
also quite commonplace. Platonic or
spiritual, their mutual admiration was
palpable and infectious. Both shared
much more than their films and would
even look to each other for solace in
times both good and bad.
While it is known to most that Suchitra
visited the Belur Math, few know that
Uttam did so, too. Both of them would
religiously sit in their puja rooms
in the morning, and loved incense
sticks. What brought them together,
however, was their common passion
for excellence in cinema, the thirst for
making it big and the will to fight their
way to the top. This is perceptible in
their choice of scripts which matured
over time, and their acting in terms of
emoting and dialogue delivery which
became less theatrical and more subtle.
The two had tremendous respect for
each other, too. Uttam’s and Suchitra’s
relationship was based on mutual trust,
appreciation and admiration for each
other’s work and personality.
An anecdote goes that during the
shooting of Priyo Bandhobi, Suchitra
had arrived on time for the shoot but

met with some technical problems and
was not working. Ritesh, out of the
blue requested everyone to join for an
impromptu dance to one of the film’s
songs. And when all of us hit the floor,
the dance then lasted for not less than
5 hours! These 5 hours helped each of
us in bonding with each other like never
before! Where all the locations of the shoot? The whole film was shot in and around
Mahabaleshwar. How is Ritesh Menon as a director? He is an extremely experienced guy.
Having worked with the ace film maker
Santosh Sivan for as many as 8 years,
the training showed in his direction.
Even on a personal level,
I have never seen anyone
so calm and composed
even in the most stressful
situation. It is his energy
which brought us all
together. Who is the real ‘Kukkad’
of the film? In the film, everyone is
running like a headless
chicken. ‘Kukkad’ is a
term which is used to
describe the family. And the actual
meaning of the said term you will get to
see when you see the film. Do you feel that your experience in theater helps you in films? The answer is cent per cent yes. Theatre
was my indeed my training ground for
films. Will you do anything on television? I would really love to do something for
TV, but only if it’s really interesting. Were you always a film buff- a first day

Trust me when I say that I saw all the
films which were released in the year
1986 and 1987. I even have evidence of
that in the form of ticket counter foils.
Besides collecting the ticket counter
foils, I used to write about the star cast
and a small review of the film in a book.
In addition to that, I also used to write
as to with whom I saw the film! How much do you believe in luck and
hard work? Luck is something I truly believe in as
much as I believe in hard work. And
when you work hard, luck always helps
you to take you ahead in life. What’s the secret of your success? I am not impatient in life about
anything, which is what I feel has got

bathroom while in Goregaon? What happened was
that when I was sitting

Raho Munnabhai with
Shantanu Moitra, Raju
Hirani and Vidhu Vinod

able to search for a place to write sings,
I went to the bathroom, where I got an
idea for the song’s lyrics. And when
I told the team about it, they laughed
on hearing that they generalized that ‘I
write my lyrics in the bathroom”. And
that’s how the whole thing started! How long does it take to pen a song? It all depends from song to song. It
could be as fast and quick in a jiffy,
while it could take even weeks. To

Danny Sir is not only crucial to this film;
he is the brains behind us all. Meaty,

fit young man he is. Just to shake his
hand, you think you are in the presence
of an officer. Baby wouldn’t be the

On the other hand, Madhurima Tuli
plays your wife in the film. Since you
have given an opportunity to quite a few
actresses in the industry, how has Madhurima turned out to be?
She is a fine actress whose future
holds very promising ventures. She is
an absolute delight to work with and
a pleasure being a husband to in the
film. Our industry needs
actresses like Madhurima.

what Bollywood makes of

Earlier this year, you came
up with Holiday that was
again about extraditing
terrorists out of their hole.
Now, in Baby too, you are
following a trail. Is it just the treatment
that differentiates both or there is more
to the plot, twists and turns that separate
the two films?
Each film is in a league of its own. They
are both a subject that we now are all
tackling on almost a daily basis, yet
each and every act of terrorism is a plot
on its own. It’s a something that no one
can prepare for. This genre of film is
unbelievably hard to face, but one that
must be faced head on. This world isn’t
always about laughs, babies and fluffy
dogs; this world is mean, terrifying
and extremely real, so is cinema. I
feel compelled to make cinema that
entertains people, as well as awakens
them. The story of these two films
couldn’t be further apart.

So you are saying you have not become
choosy in picking up roles?
I believe filmmakers need to start
writing more and more roles for actors
and less for characters. In a general
scenario we have roles written for
hero, heroine, villain, item girl, etc. But
ideally it should be
written for the actors.
If you have seen Rajat
Kapoor’s last film
Ankhon Dekhi, that
was a film written
for actors. Even
Club 60 was written
for actors and that’s
why I chose to be a
part of it. When this
happens in our film
industry, the actors
start flourishing and
that helps them better
the quality of acting
that they do.
Do you think your daughters are also
getting victimised by this? Because most
of the roles that they pick up are character-driven and not actor-driven?
Let’s not jump the gun with Akshara
right now. You will have to see
Shamitabh to know what has been
written for her as an actor. I can’t say
that in future she wouldn’t give in to the
craze of character driven roles, but we
can’t say that now.
And what about Shruti Haasan?
Shruti has taken her decisions and those
seem to have worked for her brilliantly.
As long as it works for her there is no
harm. She has already proved her mettle

You have been part of TV. Do you think
it’s not as good a medium as films? Would
you suggest TV to your daughters?
See as an actor my basic need is to
perform. If the role that I have been
offered, I feel that the actor in me can
do well, then I would definitely do
it. Now whether that is shown on TV
or on the big screen doesn’t really
matter. However it is
imperative to check
fully before you sign
any project as many
a time a project starts
with great intentions
but doesn’t see the
light of the day.
That hurts an actor.
That’s why it is very
important to see if the
producers are good
and if the director is
capable enough of
steering the film in
the right direction.
At the end, more than
the money, it’s the recognition that an
actor gets is what matters. The medium
is just secondary.
You reportedly hold Akshara back from
going out and having boyfriends and
make sure that she spends most of her
time shooting and working for her film.
How true is that?
No. Never have I done anything of that
sort.
What other future projects are you working on?
I am reading a lot of scripts these days.
Whenever there is something I find
interesting to do, I will sign it then and
there.

Shekhar, fighting for the hand of
the heroine, cables the Seth, and it’s
the Seth’s arrival on the scene that
encourages Jack to ask for money. Thus,
the film space is largely occupied by
Pran, leaving Shammi Kapoor again an
observer most of the time, though he’s
aided by the mellifluous Rafi number
“Akele, Akele.” This is an important
feature of this film. An Evening in Paris
is a significant film of the decade as it
shows the villain’s cool calculating
menace in which he’s substantially aided
by the vamp a feature that looks much
ahead of the time. Importantly, a foreign
land becomes the center of action in this
film. This point should be noted also.
Finding Jack in action, Shekhar
approaches Suji to take over the place of
Deepa, now missing. They agree to share
the money between them when Shekhar
succeeds in claiming the hand of Deepa.
Shekhar is encouraged by the Seth, who
considers him to be a worthy son-in
law, in spite of protests from Shekhar’s
well meaning father who looks after
the Seth’s property in Paris. The Seth
recognizes the merits of the villain and
thinks that he has a greater claim for the
beautiful and wealthy heroine. But, in no
time, he too is pulled away from behind
by the wily scriptwriter, discrediting the
claim of the smart good looking villain
a prominent feature of films showing
Shammi Kapoor-Pran antithesis.
In An Evening in Paris, a clock indicates
the time of entries and exits through
the doors. Finally, the mighty occupant
is seen relaxing in his chair. Jack
appreciates Shekhar for being smart
and takes the money with a little bit of
suspicion. Shekhar wastes no time and
shoots his rival from in side the briefcase
containing money.

of Terni became bishop of Interamna
(modern Terni) about AD 197 and is
said to have been martyred during the
persecution under Emperor Aurelian.
He is also buried on the Via Flaminia,
but in a different location than
Valentine of Rome. His relics are at
the Basilica of Saint Valentine in Terni
(Basilica di San Valentino). Jack B.
Oruch states that “abstracts of the acts
of the two saints were in nearly every
church and monastery of Europe.” The
Catholic Encyclopedia also speaks
of a third saint named Valentine who
was mentioned in early martyrologies
under date of February 14. He was
martyred in Africa with a number of

about him. Saint Valentine’s head was
preserved in the abbey of New Minster,
Winchester, and venerated.

The iconic Kamal Haasan idolizes two
actors. “I grew up hero worshipping
Shivaji Ganesan. He was like the guiding
sun in my life. Then I discovered an
entire galaxy in Dilip Saab. I discovered
Dilip Saab rather late. It took me a
long time to learn to appreciate him.
I belong to another culture, another
generation. The first film of Dilip Saab
that I saw was Mughal-e-Azam. He
touched something deep within me as
an actor. You have to be an actor to fully
understand what Dilip Saab achieves
through his performances. I am still in
the process of discovering his virtuosity.
Actually I was introduced to Hindi
cinema very late. The first Hindi film I
saw was Padosan, and that too because
I was told that the Tamil community was
lampooned in the film through Mehmood
Saab’s character. I ended up becoming
a fan of Hindi cinema. I never stopped
seeing Hindi films. I gradually revisited
the classics. I saw V Shantaram’s Jal
Bin Machali Nritya Bin Bijli and I
wondered why they called Shantaramji
a great filmmaker. Then I saw Jhanak
Jhanak Paayal Baje and Dr Kotnis Ki
Amar Kahani and I knew why.” Then I
saw Dilip Kumar in Mughal-e-Azam.
“It changed my life. It re-defined my
attitude to acting. I thought that was the
ultimate. Then when I came to Mumbai
to do Ek Duuje Ke Liye I met Javed
Akhtar Saab. I told him I am a fan of
Dilip Saab although I had seen just one
film Mughal-e-Azam. He advised, urged
and implored me to see Ganga Jamuna. I
saw it. I couldn’t stop raving about it. Just
looking at Dilip Saab in Ganga Jamuna I
got all the inspiration that I needed.
In Ganga Jamuna he did an amazing
thing. He signed on an unknown teenager
to play his character’s younger version.
It was a very risky thing to do. Normally

characters go from childhood to adult.
Here in Ganga Jamuna Dilip Saab was
cutting it closer. He trained the teenager
to behave like ‘Dilip Kumar’ The way the
boy walks, climbs, talks….he brought his
own spirit into the boy.” In his Tamil film, Guna Kamal Haasan
paid a tribute to Ganga Jamuna. “I had
written a scene in Guna with a gun
that I saw in Ganga Jamua when I fight
with the cops the gun goes off.” After
seeing Ganga Jamuna Kamal Haasan met
his idol. “I had to meet the man. I went
to meet him the day after I saw Ganga
Jamuna. I had tears in my eyes when I
told him what I thought of him. He just
looked at me and smiled. Maybe he
thought, ‘Not another one.’ I apologized
to him for discovering him late.” From then on Kamal Haasan has met
Dilip Saab during every visit to Mumbai.
“He came on my request to Chennai
many years ago to give an award to my
other favorite Shivaji Ganesan. In front of
40,000 people I showed off my familiarity
with Yusuf Saab. Before the function in
his hotel room I got to talk to Yusuf Saab
for two and a half hours. Rather, he talked,
I listened. Those were the most revealing
hours of my life as an actor. He described
to me his life as a boy in Kabul. As you
know he is a great speaker. That quality
remains. That day in Chennai I imbibed
Yusuf Saab’s hunger for knowledge. A
deprivation of formal education never
deterred him from educating himself.
The same is true of me. That’s where the
similarity ends. His struggle has been
manifold. I was born without a silver
spoon. But unlike Yusuf Saab a silver
spoon was gifted to me.” Kamal Haasan, a self-styled Dilip Kumar
devotee marvels at the Thespian’s
presence of mind. “Who says Yusuf

speech anymore? Rubbish! His silence is
being misconstrued. Dilip Saab was and
remains a quiet attentive observer and
listener. When he speaks he speaks with
devastating coherence.” Kamal Haasan met him last in October
this year. He recorded the entire encounter
and conversation on a moving camera.
“He is absolutely coherent. He is old and
tired of the idolization. He is reposeful
and craving for quietude. He doesn’t care
for the laudatory shouting all around him.
I met him on October 14 and then on his
birthday on December 11, as I try to do
each year. When it comes to Dilip Saab
I am a fan boy. And he knows it. When
I gush and fall to my knees in front of
him his eyes light up with delighted
amusement. ‘Just look at this boy. Why
is he doing this?’ he asks his wife Sairaji.
But Sairaji has only a smile for an answer.
How does one explain to this wonder
actor that he has inspired generations of
actors? I am just one of them. Each time I
meet him I kiss his hand and call him my
godfather. Dilip Saab remains amused at
my unabashed idolization.” During their last visit when Kamalji
visited Dilip Saab with his filmmakerfriend Ramesh Sippy they expected the
Thespian to have aged and slowed down. “None of that!” marvels fan boy Kamal
Haasan. “We were all talking loudly as
one tends to for the old. But Yusuf Saab
was as alert and receptive as ever. When
Rameshji suggested a picture of me and
Yusuf Saab together I scampered gleeful
to my idol’s side. I was delighted to be
ranked with Dilip Saab by Rameshji.
When people compare us I say with all
immodesty and with no false humility, ‘I
can never be the best actor until Yusuf is
there. He is by far the best actor India has
ever produced.’”

Says the younger actor emotionally,
“Yusuf Saab has influenced two
generations of actors. I am very sure he
will continue to tug at the heartstrings
of a third generation of actors. The only
actor about whom we can say the same is
Marlon Brando. Why did Yusuf Saab and
Brando have to be so good? They didn’t
have to be. Even half as talented would
have done. Yusuf Saab invented method
acting on his own when there was no
such concept.” When Kamal Haasan last met his idol
he told him that the performances today
lag behind what he achieved so long ago
and that today’s actors emulate the great
Dilip Kumar. Recalls Kamal Haasan with a smile,
“Ramesh Sippy Saab who was with
me raised his voice and repeated what
I had said. Yusuf Saab turned around
and said, ‘Yeah, I know. But why?’
And he chuckled. I have it on a moving
camera. I have recorded his interview for
posterity.” Kamal Haasan recalls an incident from
his last meeting with Dilip Saab that
shows the Thespian’s presence of mind.
“When he came into the room he saw all
the wires spread across the room by the
technical crew. ‘Arrey bhai isske hatao.
Aadmi gir jayega,’ Dilip Saab said. They
pushed the cables away from his range.
He said, ‘Nahin, that won’t do. That’s for
your safety. What about mine?’ He ate
chicken sandwiches while we refrained
from eating in front of him. After
polishing off his plate he said, ‘Get me
more.’ I grabbed his hand one more time.
I didn’t want to let him go. Sairaji came
in and said. ‘My Pathan, my Pathan’
I started crying. Sairaji said, ‘I want to

Uttam was late. While she waited in
her make-up van, Suchitra enquired
about the delay. Upon learning that
the shooting was held up because of
Uttam, she informed the producer that
she would wait for only five minutes
more. If Uttam did not turn up by that
time, she would leave; and she left, as
threatened.
When Uttam arrived on the sets, and
learnt that Suchitra had left, being an
astute man he got the message. Suchitra
purportedly called the producer later
and told him that whatever she had
done was for the best and that he should
deduct his losses for the day from her
fees. True to her estimation, thereafter,
Uttam was always on time for all the
other shots of the film.
Suchitra’s influence on Uttam and
vice-versa was well known to most in
the industry. For the shooting of Priyo
Bandhobi, Uttam could allot only
few dates at first. When the perturbed
producer contacted Suchitra, she took
the responsibility of talking to Uttam;
the matter was resolved in no time with
the producer being allotted adequate
dates. Similarly, on several occasions,
when Suchitra, famous for her tantrums,
refused to shoot, Uttam cajoled her
into relenting. The fact that she had
to always be cajoled by Uttam also
fuelled the curiosity of bystanders who
vouched they had a special relationship.
Perhaps, it is this influence which led
Uttam to seek her out in moments of
crisis, too. Hushed rumours suggest that
on the evening of 3rd September, 1963
during a celebration in his house, Uttam
had gone upstairs to receive a call from
Supriya Devi. A suspicious Gauri Devi
followed her husband and a big fight

ensued between the two. Uttam left
his home that night, following months
of tension between them. While it
was reported that Uttam had gone to
Supriya Devi’s Moira Street home, the
fact was that he had actually first gone
to Suchitra’s home. But Suchitra could
not take him in because of her own
problems.
Photographer Dhiren Deb recalls
an occasion when he photographed
the pair in a carefree mood. At the
Bengal Film Journalist Association’s
annual prize distribution ceremony,
while plenty of photographers happily
clicked away the closely seated Uttam
and Suchitra, Dhiren Deb waited for
his moment. He observed Uttam and
Suchitra deep in conversation. His
instinct told him he might be able to
capture a special moment. With luck
on his side, he clicked one of the most
memorable pictures that captured the
duo’s beautiful chemistry. A laughing
Suchitra and a happy Uttam winking at
her made it to the front page of Cine
Advance. To thousands of Uttam and
Suchitra fans, the photograph spoke
volumes about their favourite offscreen
affection.
When a rumour mongering magazine
once reported that Suchitra brought
special lunch for Uttam, during
their shooting, Uttam immediately
announced that in order to respect
public sentiments, Suchitra would have
to do exactly so. While this caused
much amusement amongst the duo
and their colleagues, it is a marker of
the collective thought of a generation
who refused to accept Uttam without
Suchitra, either in reality or in films.
