WBO Gould Award 2014 The Budgerigar Society are delighted to announce that following a recent meeting of the WBO, the Gould Award 2014 has been bestowed upon the current Vice Chairman of the Society, Ghalib Al-Nasser. This international honour is awarded by the WBO each year as recognition of Meritorious Services to the World of Budgerigars. The General Council received a nomination for Ghalib to be put forward for the award and this was passed to the WBO following a meeting of the GC last year. Ghalib becomes the first winner of the prestigious award from the UK. Maurice Roberts commended Ghalib for being given this honour: This is a tremendous achievement for both Ghalib and the Budgerigar Society and goes some way to recognising the remarkable contribution he has made to the hobby across the globe. Ghalib first joined the Budgerigar Society in 1971 having moved to the UK from Iraq in 1962. He serves as a General Council member, Vice Chairman and holds 28 offices in 13 budgerigar organisations in this country and abroad. Commenting on receiving the award Ghalib said: I am humble and honoured to be recognised by my follow councillors in the initial nomination and by the world organisation for the award. I am thankful to all for this award. The Gould Award will be presented at the Budgerigar Society AGM on 27th April 2014. Open Show Judges We are pleased to announce that the following BS Panel Judges have agreed to officiate at our 2014 Open Show on Sunday 17th August. Mick Freeborn Andy Thorpe Ian Thorogood We look forward to seeing them—and all the entries - at our show.. Special points of interest: We still have 2 spare slots for our monthly meeting nights– has anybody got any ideas or would like any specific subjects discussed. Contact a committee member if you have any ideas. Hastings Budgerigar Society Page 2 The last meeting , held on Monday February 24th, was a ‘Bring & Buy Sale’ followed by our annual debate on the breeding statuses at our members’ birdrooms. The former passed with trading being low but it was noticed that some members were able to purchase some very useful stock birds.—Did some beginners miss the chance to enhance there stock? The first point that was clear from the discussions on members’ breeding progress this year was that more than half present had not started breeding yet and were waiting to pair up. Is this going to be the trend going forward or just as a result of individual circumstances? Of those that were actively breeding there were mixed results with over 200 babies from 110 pairs. Still a low average of under 2 chicks per pair. Advice to all members Don’t forget if anybody is having a particular problem with their breeding there are some experienced members who may be able to help so contact them.
