FROM THE RECTOR
Making all things new
I met him the other day along New Street; I’d know those eyes anywhere.
I saw him again, fetching the ball when it almost landed on top of the Pavilion at Zeal
(kicking it back to those lads on the Rec with a nifty move, he’s surprisingly quick).
Some-one saw him trying to hitch a ride along the Venton Straight; the cars and the
coaches and the Thompson’s lorries kept passing by. He kept on walking.
You may well have come across him by the river -he loves the rivers around here - and
during the long, hot days of last summer he could often be seen sitting upstream from
Shilley Pool, face sun-wise, letting his bare feet trail in the churning waters of the
Blackaton Brook until they were numb.
Useful information 2, 4
Last Thursday - I’m sure it was him - he was picking up the junk dumped on the
bridlepath off the Hittisleigh road. Other people’s unwanted baggage and bad behaviour
(he ‘specialises in dealing with them’, he said, ‘proper job.’). I caught him laughing with
the nurses when I dropped in on a friend at Oke hospital; he’d been there all night.
From the Rector 3
I met him the other day along New Street; holding some-one’s hand.

annual Bluebell Walk
from West Pitton
Once he told me some of the nicknames of old friends long gone (he didn’t tell me his!);
of the days when there were a lot more ale-houses than chapels. He has some tales, I
can tell you, of nights out at the Rising Sun, the Bullers, the Kings and getting on the
wrong side of Mabel at the Drewe once or twice... Now the religious people looked
down their noses at him for that sort of thing, but there’s nowhere he doesn’t go. They
say his name lots of times on a Friday night but no-one would think to buy him a pint.
He’s there all right, just like he was in the days when the miners came down from the
moor, from the wind-blasted working land that gave them their living (for a time). All
gone now.
I met him the other day along New Street; but I was in a hurry. His hands were killing
him, carrying the bags and steering the pushchair while the toddler was screaming to
walk. I didn’t know where to look.
But down Gidleigh Mill last Easter he was reminiscing about the songs and the prayers
and the curses of the wool-carriers and tradesmen and the pilgrims as they snaked their
way north and south across fields and fords and moorland. Long gone to us, maybe, but
not to him.
He helped my friend Sean the other week, over the other side of the A30. Putting in the
new hedgerows - replacing ones ripped out in haste - he just loves planting things, things
that will last.
Loads of people say they’re ‘not religious’, or that he wouldn’t be interested in them
because they’re ‘not holy enough’; but he is. Some blame him for everything; but he sees
the hurt behind all that. Some just sneer and say he doesn’t even exist. I guess it’s easier
that way.
I met Jesus the other day along New Street. Have you?
Revd Paul

WHIDDON NEWS
Welcome aboard! Chris and Julia Grasske
Julia and I have been married for 25 years and have two children,
Richard, 21 (living and working in London) and Jack, 18 (currently on a
gap year in New Zealand). I complete my training at Cuddesdon,
Oxfordshire in June and will be moving to South Tawton over the
summer.
Before training for Ordination I worked for 25 years as a Control
Systems Engineer, running my own company for 12 of those years.
Julia and I both grew up in rural Devon and spent many years in the small
rural parish of St Paul’s, Filleigh, just outside South Molton. We are
looking forward to moving to West Devon and getting to know a new
part of the county.
We like walking, cycling and swimming and I enjoy cooking. The most
recent addition to our family is a 3-year-old rescue terrier called Scruff
and he likes nothing better than running and rolling in open fields.
Julia and I are hoping to be able to visit before Easter and very much look
forward to meeting as many of you as possible.
It is wonderful news that Chris and Julia will be joining us this Summer. Chris will be licensed to the Whiddon Mission
Community, serving as Curate (full-time), working day-to-day alongside me and Revd Harriet Every in the seven
parishes formerly known as the Whiddon benefice. Please keep Chris and Julia in your prayers and Sunday 14th
September (10am) free in your diary – the date when Chris is to be ordained Deacon at Exeter Cathedral.

Chagford Health Centre PPG
Welcome to our first newsletter. PPGs (Patients
Participation Groups) were first set up in 1972 and now
many general practices in England have their own PPG.
The group is made up of volunteers from the patient list
and was formed to support the surgery and staff, and to
represent the views and concerns of patients by direct
contact with the practice. This ensures that the range
and quality of services offered by the surgery continue
to be of a high standard and appropriate to the needs of
the community.
The PPG can be contacted via Email at:

leave a note addressed to the PPG with the Reception
staff at the Health Centre.

‘Crucify Him. Crucify Him.’
Easter Passion at
Oberammergau 1990
By now dawn is breaking
and the lights come on as
Christ is led off the stage
and the scene is set for the
final act of the drama. I had
not appreciated before how
weary and hungry He must
have been as He struggled
up the hill to Golgotha. He had had no food or rest
since the Last Supper and He must have been physically
and mentally pulverised.
In this Bavarian village, in the far south of Germany,
every ten years the inhabitants re-enact the Easter
Passion of Jesus Christ as a thanksgiving for their
deliverance from the plague in 1663. They have been
doing this for over 300 years. Almost everyone in the
village has played a part over the years.
Our tour group was accommodated all round the village
in the private houses of those who had taken parts in
the Passion Play in previous years. My wife and I were
allocated to the house of the Virgin Mary (1985) and she
looked after us exceedingly well, but I could not help
feeling slightly disconcerted by such 'holiness’ in our
20th century accommodation.
The climax of the play, which takes place on the barren
hill top of Golgotha, shocked the audience as they
watched the Christ being laid horizontally on the cross
which was lying on the ground. Then came the hammer
blows as the nails were thrust through His hands and
feet. It was almost unbearable. There was a stunned
silence in the audience as the sharp blows of the
hammers on the nails echoed through the hall.
There is a specially built auditorium on the outskirts of
the village where the play is performed. The action
faithfully follows the last hours of Christ's earthly life
from his arrest in the garden of Gethsemane on the
evening before his crucifixion to his trial and death on
the cross at 3pm on the following day. Some of the
action had to be truncated to enable it to be completed
in one day, but it is still very long, starting at 9am and
finishing in early evening with a midday break for a
picnic lunch.
Then we watched as the cross was slowly elevated to
the upright position, and the body suddenly sagged as its
weight fell on the nails through the hands and feet.
A gasp escapes from us spectators as the full horror of
the execution bears down on us. The time on the cross
was much reduced in the play as there are long periods
when there is little action apart from the silent
sufferings. We see His mother and his aunt, and Mary
Magdalene and His favourite disciple, John, grouped at
the foot of the cross in desolate grief.
You might think it would not hold one's attention
throughout the day, but from the very beginning of the
play, which started with Judas' kiss in the darkness of
the Garden of Gethsemane, until the final cry from the
cross it was totally absorbing.
Then the darkness came down and the stage was almost
blacked out, to represent the words of St Luke's gospel
‘by this time it was about 12 o'clock, and darkness
covered the whole land till 3 o'clock, owing to the
eclipse of the sun'.
It started with the Christ being led away among swaying
lanterns on poles across the Kedron Brook to the
eastern gate in the walls of Jerusalem. It was a walk
which my wife and I had followed a few years earlier so
the scene resonated powerfully with us.
The tension in the hall is nigh unbearable. After a
dramatic silence and with the stage darkened that final,
desperate cry rent the hall:
We watched the awful cruelty of the interrogation by
the High Priests which seemed to go on for hours
before Christ was led away to the palace of Pontius
Pilate. We were more than ready for some release from
the tension when we were given a break for lunch, and
we went out into welcome sunshine and ate our picnic
provided by the 'Virgin Mary'.
‘My God, My God, Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?’
What does it mean?
The lights came on in the auditorium and we filed out in
silence. It was the most powerful piece of acting I had
ever seen.
Tony McCrum
The second half started with the cross-examination by
Pontius Pilate and ending with the orchestrated mob
cry:

decorated Holy Trinity at Gidleigh in March (thank you
Lyn for the warmth of your welcome).
Pilgrim Walk
The Revd Paul with Martin Stephens-Hodge led the
second Pilgrim Walk from St Mary's Church,
Throwleigh on a rare sunny Saturday, 1st March. It really
felt like the first day of spring and a goodly turnout with
many well-behaved dogs set forth for the moor by way
of Clannaborough and the drovers' path, with prayers
and even poetry-reading on the way.
We have welcomed a number of new members recently
and are always pleased to see new faces. We continue
to meet at 10am on the last Saturday of each month in
venues around the area, to sing, laugh, consume homemades and sometimes go to the pub for lunch
afterwards.
Forward dates:
We were well-rewarded for the climb with a
magnificent 360 degree view, and Martin led us to the
best-preserved ruined round house on the moor, dating
from c.2,500 BC. We completed the trail down by
Shilstone Rocks and Lane, enjoying a cuppa and a slice
or two back in church. It was the most uplifting and
memorable morning. Thank-you to our leaders. For the
next walk see the notice on this page.

WWI memorabilia
As is already well known, August 4th 2014 will be the
100th anniversary of Britain’s entry into World War I.
Chagford Local History Society, with the support of
Chagford Parish Council, while in no way wishing to
glorify the event, would like to document as full a picture as possible of our community’s way of life during
those four years. Not only are we intending to record
the lives, and sometimes deaths, of those who went to
fight, but also the lives of those who continued to live
and work here, in order to portray how the war impinged, or not, on their lives.
The society would like to ask whether anyone still has
photographs, letters, diaries, pictures, documents,
memories of conversations or memorabilia dating from
this period, whether war or community connected, to
help this project, and if so, would they be prepared to
lend us the items? Great care will be taken: the items
receipted and signed for, and returned in the condition
in which they were lent.
It may be that nothing occurs immediately, but if later it
does, then within five years it will not be too late to
contribute. Some people may also be in touch with the
descendants of those who lived here during the war
years and have moved away, but who have kept memorabilia: perhaps they could be asked to share what they
have?
To get in touch with the group (Jean Rhodes, Christine
Baker, Robert Sampson, Allan Taylor and Sue Price)
then please do telephone (leave a message if necessary),
or email and your message will be answered as soon as
possible.

T
he trouble with April and May in the natural
world is that there is too much going on!
These are the best two months of the year for
wildflowers, summer migrant birds are arriving
and nesting, trees and blossom are breaking out
everywhere, and butterflies are on the wing. There is an
infinite number of subjects to write about, although this
is not a complaint.
If you are interested in the subject of wildflowers and
wish you had more knowledge of what is growing
around us, now is the time to buy a flower identification
book, take a walk in the countryside and see how many
you can name. There are many good paperback books
that fit in a pocket and are not too heavy. This is
important because identification should mean taking the
book to the flower and not the flower to the book. You
will probably know the common species already, so it is
only a question of adding one or two to your memory
on each walk.
cedars, which you can frequently see on television news
stories. Burning cedar can bring bad luck, which also
happens to anyone causing injury to a cedar.
Leaving the subject of flowers and trees for a moment,
the garden also has some April connections, for with
Easter came the need to plant vegetables such as beans
or potatoes. One old Devon saying is:
There are several wildflowers associated with Easter,
which falls in April this year. Borage is a bright blueflowered hairy plant of wayside banks and rough places,
part of a large family that includes comfrey, alkanet,
lungwort, forget-me-not and bugloss, all of which grow
locally. The association with Easter is that borage was
said to have been offered on a sword-point to Christ on
the Cross. Legend also has it that it was added to the
final stirrup cup to those who were leaving on the
Crusades. It apparently had properties to refresh, uplift
and encourage, all of which would be needed on such an
enterprise. These crusaders, seeing the Saracens using
comfrey to heal wounds, were said to have introduced
it to England.
‘When you hear the cuckoo shout
It’s time to plant your tatties out.’
Some believe that potatoes should be planted on Good
Friday with the eyes pointing towards the sunrise. I have
no doubt that congregations sometimes shrank when
this superstition was adhered to. Because it was the
most propitious day, evil forces being suspended for
three days, parishioners went planting instead of
praying.
May is the month when swifts arrive, signifying the start
of summer. Locally this is usually between the 3rd and
7th, depending on the weather and food supply. They
also like to travel with the wind so a south or southwesterly is favoured. They will only raise one brood, so
are the last migrants to arrive and first to go.
Cedar is just one of the trees that are said to have
provided the wood for the Cross. This seems likely as
Israel is not particularly well wooded other than with
Another expression of universal delight at the return of
summer is the blossoming of the hawthorn, or may
tree, which seems to please us all. There are many
superstitions about the hawthorn, mostly from pagan
times and generally foretelling misfortune if cut down. It
was also a tree that could perform good deeds if
treated well. The most famous example is the hawthorn
at Glastonbury, said to have sprung from Joseph of
Arimathea’s staff, thereafter blooming on Christmas
Day. I have not seen this, only hawthorn in bloom in
autumn together with red berries. A tree confused by
climate change, I think. Whatever your preference,
flowers or otherwise, a happy Easter to you all.

Museum seeks volunteers
Mole Avon charity fashion
Under its new management the Museum of Dartmoor
Life is looking forward to the coming season. It is
developing a reputation as a fun and friendly place to
volunteer. We have vacancies for people with a wide
range of skills and interests and training will be
provided.
The Mole Avon Charity Fashion Show is back for 2014
– even bigger and better! Following on from its success
in 2011, Mole Avon Town & Country Stores is pleased
to announce that it will be hosting a series of charity
fashion shows in May.
The fundraising events will take place at the branch in
Exeter Road, Okehampton, on 1st, 2nd and 3rd May,
(7.30 for 8pm start), to raise money for Hospiscare.
They are a continuation of the Mole Avon Ruby Appeal
that was launched by the company in 2013. It is hoped
they will help achieve its target of £40,000 for the
charity. Mole Avon’s last two fashion shows, held in
2011, raised a massive £7,000, split between CLIC
Sargent and the BBC Radio Devon Air Ambulance
Appeal.
This year we are looking for:
•
Volunteer museum and tourism assistants to
welcome visitors, provide tourism information
and staff the shop
•
A volunteer co-ordinator to help recruit, train
and manage volunteers
•
Maintenance volunteers with strong practical
skills
•
A knowledgeable gardener
•
Events and education volunteers
•
Collection care and documentation volunteers
The shows will feature the customers, friends and family
of Mole Avon Town & Country Stores parading its new
season’s clothing. Tickets are available from all Mole
Avon branches. For more information call Mole Avon

Highlights among this year’s events include an

activities in school holidays. For more information

YOUNG PEOPLE
‘Return to Aesop’
Youth musical theatre summer
school returns to Chagford
Drewsteignton and
Chagford Cubs
The new term started in January and we meet on a
Thursday evening 6–7.30pm in Endecott House,
Chagford, for boys and girls aged 8–10½.
Starling Arts is once again returning to Chagford, to run
a 12-day Musical Theatre Summer School for local
young people from Monday 18th - Friday 29thAugust
(inclusive). Starling’s co-directors Anna Shields and
Emily Cook are excited to be producing their new, fun,
family musical, Return to Aesop.
We had a very kind donation from Helpful Holidays
which allowed us to buy three tarpaulins which will
come in very useful at summer camp in June. We were
also given a large bag of sports equipment by OCRA, so
the cubs have been focusing on their ‘fitness challenge’
which includes indoor hockey, dodge ball and circuit
training.
Following on from the success of Honk!, Moon, Beauty
and the Beast and A West End Spectacular, this year’s
Summer School is open to anyone aged nine to 21 (on
May 31st 2014) from Chagford and the surrounding
villages, and will culminate in four performances of the
musical in Chagford Jubilee Hall.
The cubs have had a visit to Okehampton College to
complete the Information Technology badge as well.
The week of Shrove Tuesday saw us cooking and
flipping pancakes.
Places are limited and performing roles will be allocated
at an audition workshop. Auditions will take place on
Saturday 31st May in Endecott House from 2–5pm.
This is a fun session for everyone who wants to be
involved. Participants will be required to prepare
something for audition and everyone who attends will
be given a part in the production. Because of this,
anyone wishing to take part in the Summer School must
apply to Starling Arts by Friday 9th May expressing
their interest.
If you have, or you know somebody who has, a skill
they could share with us we would love to hear from
you – this could be anything from DIY, local history to
making a bow and arrow! - or indeed, if you would like
to volunteer to come and help.
For more information please contact Isabel on 01363
82711 or [email protected]
The cost for this year’s Summer School is just £70 (with
reductions for subsequent children in the same family).
This fee includes Starling Arts’ care and expertise for
the 12 days of rehearsals and performances, and a
Return to Aesop t-shirt, script and CD.
If you are interested in taking part in this project, please
ask for an application and consent form by emailing
Anna Shields and Emily Cook on [email protected]

YOUNG PEOPLE
T
he last few months have been busy for me
with OTE and The Mess. We are still seeing
new young people through the door which is
encouraging and it won’t be long until once
again everyone will move up a school year and we see
some new faces. The normal sessions are going strong
and all the young people are still keen to work on small
projects. Recently, the girls at The Mess have been
working on a rag rug and are also knitting jumpers for
young children in Africa.
Trip to Spain
As mentioned in the last edition, in July 2014 we will be
taking a group of young people to walk the final stage of
the Camino in Spain. The walk will be from Sarria to
Santiago de Compostela and is set to take us a week to
walk the 113km trek. Just over a year and a half ago we
walked the Saints Way in Cornwall with a group of
young people over a two day period. This trip was such
a great experience and a challenge for all involved that
we thought we’d do another similar journey. We will be
publicizing this more nearer the time, but do ask for
your thoughts and prayers in our preparation for this
once in a lifetime trip.
The Film Discussion Nights have started up again after a
term off and run on the first Wednesday of the month
at Chagford Gospel Church with food and the film
starting at 6pm. After this, we discuss the themes that
can be seen throughout the film and how they relate to
the Bible and what that could mean for us. It is a great
social time as well as beginning to understand a bit more
about who God is.
Another faith-based piece of work is the Youth Bible
Study held at The Mess on the third Sunday of every
month from 10am-11am (although it is different in April
as it’s Easter Sunday). This has so far been about
understanding more about Scripture and how is applies
to our lives - we are continuing to look at John’s
Gospel. Both these pieces of work are for young people
aged 12-18 years old and anyone is welcome to come
along and see what it is like.
This trip is going to be subsidised for the young people
attending from money raised through the Saint’s Way
Sponsored Walk, but this will not cover all the costs. If
you feel as though you would like to help us by
sponsoring us with a small amount to fund part of our
journey, please do get in touch with Wez or the OTE
Committee. We will also be running some fundraising
events nearer the time, so please keep an eye out and
support if you can. Thank you.
Following on from the last article about the young
people’s YouTube channel - we have now passed the
13,000 view mark which is incredible! The young people
are currently writing, filming and editing a new short
comedy series based on thumb puppets called Thumbs
Up! This is definitely worth a look and can be found at
the address: www.youtube.com/otechagford/videos
Starling Arts Summer School
This summer, young people will once again be taking to
the stage to perform another musical. This has, over the
years become a regular event and we are all looking
forward to it! The dates, including the performances are
Monday 18th August and Friday 29th August 2014
inclusive. There will be open auditions on Saturday
31st May 2014, from 2-5pm in Endecott House,
Chagford. Everyone who attends will be given a part in
the production. The summer school itself will cost £70
per person. We hope to see you then!
The dates for the sessions in Whiddon Down and
Drewsteignton for the remainder of this academic year
are as follows: 14th and 28th April, 12th and 26th
May, 9th and 23rd June, 7th and 21st July. Sessions at
The Mess will continue as normal. Please check the
posters in the window for any changes.

The skate park coffee morning advertised in the last
article raised a huge £330, which is a great achievement
for all the young people involved. We are continuing to
look at different ways of fundraising in the community
and are hoping to run an event sometime in May. Watch
this space and The Mess window for more information.

News from St Michael’s
Our church choir has been working hard under the
direction of Roger Cleverdon and Richard Edwards and
will combine with the Sampford Courtenay choir and
others for ‘Reflections on Holy Week in Words and
Music’ (see the notice on page 13). We did something
similar last year, although with different music of
course, and the feedback showed how much people
gained from the evening.
Works this year include items by Gibbons, Wesley and
Ireland among others. The evenings will take place at
Sampford Courtenay on Palm Sunday 13th April at
6.30pm and at Chagford on Good Friday 18th April
starting at 6pm. Do come and support our choirs. Last
year I found this the most moving of all the Easter
events.
We have an enthusiastic working group for the pew
cushion project and decided to combine our tapestry
efforts with fabric bench cushions for the central nave.
These may already be installed by the time of this
publication. This allows us to make real progress and
then to use the variety of colours in the tweedy fabric
on which to base our own work. We plan to use images
already present in the church (roof bosses, pew ends,
screen/window detail or angels/crosses) for our images
and begin work in the near future. Some of the central
nave cushions can then be moved to the side aisles if
this seems appropriate in the years ahead. We very
much see this as a long term project and our sewing
group as a continuing asset in church life. Whether a
church member or not, if you would like to join us you
are most welcome.
On 22nd May, the Diocese will be using Chagford
Church as its venue for a conference entitled ‘The
Welcoming Church’. By that date we will have our new
nave cushions, enabling the delegates to sit in comfort
for, perhaps, several hours.
They may also be impressed with our sound system
which continues to improve. Our loop facility is a
blessing to those with hearing difficulties and we can
now control outputs from the roving microphones
without having to climb up to the balcony as we have a
portable hand-held mixer controlled by an iPad (the
wonders of today's technology). This allows the old
mixer to be used by ‘The Elastic Band’ to modulate and
blend their great musicians and singer.
Work also continues on improved lighting, though it's
doubtful if it will be ready for the Diocesan conference.
However, we can use our new green notice boards to
provide pictures of the Church family and their roles
which will personalise and provide a welcome point
within the church. We also hope to have received our
new Church Guide, which is the product of the talents
of Lucy Dickens and Diana Marriott.
Our now famous plant sale will take place on Saturday
31st May. This year we have adopted the title of
‘Leaves’ as there are lots of them: Cream teas (tea
leaves), books and the plant stalls around and in the
church. We are hoping for a great sunny day but will
plan for any alternative that our lovely climate throws at
us. The event is from 2pm-4.30pm and I suspect that my
diet will quail under teas served in pretty porcelain, and
irresistible cakes, but I have to do my duty. It will also
be nice to see the back of the 100 geraniums being
brought on in our greenhouse which are only a small
part of all the other bedding plants being organised by
Julia Endacott. Do come and join us.

Chagford continued
gether to organise a programme of fundraising events
under the guidance of the Trustees.
Why the Jubilee Hall needs YOU
As many of you may know, encouraging progress has
been made with the design and consultation programme for the development of the Jubilee Hall. We
have now reached the stage when we can begin the
process of raising the necessary funds. The days of receiving large individual grants are over, so we are
adopting a multi-pronged approach.
This will include applying for grants from charitable
organisations; appeals to authorities, eg Devon County
Council, West Devon Borough Council and the Parish
Council; donations; local fundraising events and possibly loan finance.
The Trustees have formed a Fundraising Committee to
undertake the great majority of this programme but we
do need your help with planning, organising and running local events. Through a number of low-key events
we have so far raised nearly £7,000 so there is a good
basis of support.
We are appealing to any members of the parish who
think that the improvements planned for the Jubilee
Hall will be a significant benefit to the community and
who have the time to join a small group working to-

Chagford Hospiscare
Over the past year, £2425.48 has been raised through
Coffee Mornings, £664 through Graham Stone’s slides
evening and Gwyn Chard’s sales, and £352.50 by means
of Whiddon’s Jacket Potato evening (this latter sum
included some generous donations on the night).
The total sum sent to Hospiscare is £3597.98. For a
comparatively small village like Chagford, we think that
is an excellent amount and would like to thank those
who support the cause and the volunteers throughout
the year.
In the first overseas fund raising event for Hospiscare,
Barbara Stead is going to take part in a Sahara Trek
from 6th – 11th November. She is funding the trip herself, but will appreciate any further donations or even
someone else to join her. For more details, telephone

Starting over at the Playing Field
Some of you will be aware that we need to replace most of the equipment in the
playing field as the wooden posts are beginning to rot in the ground.
Since this is a major exercise, it does give us the opportunity to start again with a
blank sheet of paper and to think about what we would like to have for the
children and how we should lay it out, given that it is the only playing field in the
parish. We are also considering whether we should include something for adults
and young adults as well.
We need a lot of help with ideas and suggestions, whether an overall plan or a
single piece of equipment. All comments are welcome, including any suggestions
from people outside the parish who have seen other play areas that work well.
We have some funds but, not surprisingly, we will need a lot more. Any support
you can give us will be gratefully received.
Please make a diary note that our next major event is the Family Fun Day on
Saturday 21st June, when our fantastic water slide will again be the star of the
show.

GIDLEIGH AND THROWLEIGH
News from Holy Trinity
On Saturday March 1st, we had a marvellous working
party in the church to clean thoroughly, polish the
brass, clean and put the chairs back, and prepare the
church for services again. It looks lovely but still needs
to dry out a little on the south wall. All we need now is
some lovely sunny weather and a little less of pouring
rain. Character Builders have worked their magic and all
the work has been done to the highest standard. We
thank them very sincerely. We will be needing them
again as we have to have the lead roof on the vestry
lifted to discover why the wood underneath has
become spongy. There is always something that needs
doing – we won’t mention the roof!
with coffee and cake – very inviting! That same weekend
we celebrated Mothering Sunday at St Mary’s when
families came to join us at the service and we
remembered our mothers, and all received a small posy.
The details of all the Easter services in the parishes can
be found on the centre pages. Here at Holy Trinity we
celebrate with a Vigil on Holy Saturday at 7.30pm. It
is a quiet and reflective service when we are invited to
renew our Baptismal vows. On Easter Day we are
invited to St Mary’s for their service.
We have been closed for two months and are very
grateful to the hospitality of Kit Newsome and Penny
Perkins with the church family of St Mary’s who have
made us very welcome.
We were all saddened to learn of the death of
Stephanie Barker – a long time member of the church
family of Gidleigh. It was disappointing that we were
unable to have her funeral in Holy Trinity but again, we
were made so welcome in St Mary’s. Her far flung family
were all there and it was wonderful to see them all
again, even though the circumstances were difficult. It
was a dreadful day, the rain didn’t stop, but there was a
full church gathered to a service in celebration of a life
so lovingly lived. She is buried with her son Jeremy, who
died in an accident when he was 15. We will all miss her
very much.
The weekend of 24th May will be very busy for Holy
Trinity. On Saturday we have our Coffee Morning at
Endecott House from 10am to 12 noon. We ask for
helpers, and cakes, plants, books and gifts you have been
given but may find a more appreciative home!
In the church, Michael Paget’s Music Group meets, as
they do each year in Throwleigh but this year, as last,
we are able to host them on Saturday. They play ancient
instruments and learn new music all day inviting anyone
who would like to come and hear the result of their
efforts in the afternoon, usually at 4pm. It is wonderful
what they achieve in such a short time. Please watch the
pew sheets for any change in the timing.
On March 29th, the Whiddon Community Choir came
to Gidleigh – it sounds a wonderful idea that anyone can
join without an audition. They began at 10am, starting

Sunday May 24th is Rogation and this year we will
have the service in the church and churchyard as the
Village Hall is booked for a function. We are so blest
that we are able to use the Village Hall from time to
time. As usual there will be refreshments after the
service.
Hopefully, by the time this is printed, the weather will
have changed and we really will be having Spring. Do
come and see us at Holy Trinity. The church looks so
lovely and is such a calm and holy place.

Parish news
Return of Renaissance players
On the weekend of the 24th and 25th of May, Philip
Thorby will return to Gidleigh and Throwleigh to direct
a group of Renaissance music enthusiasts.
Philip is well-known as a performer and authority on
Renaissance music and was Senior Fellow in Early Music
at Trinity College of Music.
We shall work on music from Renaissance Italy: an
extraordinary period of musical artistry which reached
its pinnacle in St Mark’s Venice towards the end of the
16th century. Andrea Gabrieli and his nephew Giovanni
were the most important figures in the musical
establishment there for many years, and developed the
practice of using groups of singers and instruments in
separate ‘choirs’. One remarkable Gloria, which we
hope to perform, is for four choirs (16 parts); this was
probably intended to impress four noble boys from
Japan, converts to Christianity, who visited Venice in
1585.
Each day’s rehearsal will end with a performance at
4.15pm – in Gidleigh church on Saturday 24th May,
and in Throwleigh on Sunday 25th – collection for
church funds.
St Mary’s,Throwleigh
The re-ordering of the Vestry is now complete, with a
handsome new cupboard and the relaying of the floor
under the pews at the rear (removed in January). Both
are a great improvement. Our thanks to our friends and
to John Getz (who created the custom-made cupboard
with wonderful spaces and shelves), and to all who
assisted in the clearing out of the original.
Such was the driving rain last month that we had to
drape said cupboard in tarpaulins for several
weeks - but that has had a happy ending since the
cooking trays laid side by side in the ringing chamber
have proved ideal for catching all leaks!
Mothering Sunday Morning Prayer took place on 30th
March and we now look forward to spring and to Easter
Week, with other dates as follows:
Joint APCM at Holy Trinity, Gidleigh, Wednesday 23rd
April at 7.30pm
Joint PCC meeting, Wednesday 7th May at Blackaton

‘Belshazzar’s Feast’
The Friends of Throwleigh Church are pleased to
announce that the folk duo Paul Hutchinson (accordion)
and Paul Sartin (oboe, violin and vocals) are playing in St
Mary’s Church, Throwleigh on Saturday 31st May at
7.30pm.
‘Paul Hutchinson and Paul Sartin play like no-one else you've
ever heard. Their music is breathtaking and wickedly
inventive and the between-tunes interchange is as intelligent
and hilarious as the music. But don't let me give you the
impression they're a lightweight comedy act: they finish the
set with a haunting piece of oboe and accordion magic which
has the audience spellbound.’ (BBC Radio 2 Mike Harding)

Parish news
When Gidleigh helped rebuild St Paul’s
As every schoolgirl knows, St Paul’s – old St Paul’s – burned down in the Great Fire of London in 1666. It was
rebuilt in due course, the finest church of its kind in the country, a baroque masterpiece that still conveys a thrill,
like all great architecture, the sense of space englobed, mastered. Money had to be found, besides the genius of
Sir Christopher Wren. A national effort was undertaken and all parishes were called upon to help.
Gidleigh responded. A small parish on the edge of Dartmoor with a population, then as now, of little more than
100, it sent its collection. The Parish Return towards the Rebuilding of St Paul’s of 1678, lists the contributions:*

A dozen or more families are listed and it is pleasing to think that among present day readers there may be some
who are descended from those who contributed in 1678. Local place names are among them: Matthew Ayshe
from Ashe and Elizabeth Murch whose family gave its name to Murchington. Humphrey Gay, was the parish
priest, as indicated by ‘Clarke’. During the Parliamentary period he was married by the Mayor of Okehampton
since only civil ceremonies were allowed. He was able to perform the marriage service of his daughter in
Gidleigh Church in 1658. He lived at Glebe Farm, then the rectory, and the inventory of his possessions gives us
some of the little evidence we have of daily life in the Gidleigh of the period.
Bartholemew Gidley who contributed 6d was the rumbustious Bartholemew who organised the Tinners and
fought in the Civil War, receiving a medal from Charles II for his services. He seems rather short of money, a
sign of things to come perhaps; successive generations drove the estate into bankruptcy in the 18th century.
The total raised, 12sh 3d, was a respectable contribution for a place of Gidleigh’s size. A labourer might not earn
much more in a year. John Rowe Snr and William Vogwell, leading contributors, (1sh and 6d) were prosperous
farmers. The Rowes, four of whom are listed, lived at Berrydown where the family continued to modern times.
The Vogewells owned a number of farms and there are still Vogwell fields near Chagford. In 1674 Alexander
Vogwell, a Churchwarden, gave a bell which still hangs in the tower. William (Alexander’s son) took over
Moortown and he bequeathed a farm and house at Forder to the church. Among administrators of the charity
was Robert Stark, Freya’s father, and Guy Whipham. The property was sold in the 1920s and converted to funds.
The Gidleigh Church Lands Charity Trust still continues and the recent work done in Gidleigh Church has been
notably funded from this source.
Reflecting on this story and the contributions made long ago, raises the question of what one generation leaves
behind. Who now would recall the Vogwells, grant them some honour, were it not for their contribution in the
1680s? Parents wish to leave money and possessions to their children, and it would be strange if they did not.
But it is worth thinking of making a solid contribution in a Will to the parish church. If you don’t do it, who will?
How else will you be remembered in a century’s time? What other chance do you have?
It’s only a suggestion, mind. It doesn’t only depend on money and there’s always going to church.
Michael Hardy, Treasurer, Gidleigh PCC

Friends of St Andrew’s
Village Produce Market
Since our last report the church renovations have
certainly been put through their paces! The
replacement of a few tiles and the fixing of guards/
baffles inside the louvres have been necessary due to
the terrible weather and once conditions improve,
work on the porch will start.
Despite the relentless rain Hittisleigh’s monthly
produce market continues to thrive and be a regular
opportunity to catch up with friends, enjoy the
delicious bacon rolls, and pick up local produce such
as meats, excellent cakes, cheeses and vegetables.
A huge thank you to all who contributed to last
year’s fundraising activities. This year is looking just
as busy:

number of years and I am sure it will go from strength

We are all very grateful to friends who helped with
planting saplings and in other ways last year. There will
soon be a meeting of the group planning this project, to
think about how to move forward so that the area
becomes safe for visitors. It will be necessary to
undertake some work on the trees and to ensure a
reasonably level area of grass. It may also be necessary
to plant some more saplings in the new hedge to
replace any which have not survived the winter. More
information later.

SOUTH TAWTON AND SOUTH ZEAL
St Andrew’s and St Mary’s news
St Mary’s new red sign is now on the wall and
announcing to all that the little chapel is open. No
longer will visitors express surprise when they
discover the church is open and frequently in use for
contemplative worship (Soul Space, Tuesdays at
11am), prayer and services as well as church meetings.
St Mary’s garden is also coming alive thanks to much
community involvement and the hard work of
dedicated volunteers.
It is now the turn of St Andrew’s. We plan to replace
the external sign, which is crumbling, with a new
replica in St Andrew’s colours of blue and white. The
porch notice boards are also very tired and need to
be replaced. Once the roof is finished and the
scaffolding is down we will be holding a special
thanksgiving service and celebration. A new sign and
notice boards would be so much more welcoming,
especially after parishioners have contributed so much
money to restoration which they cannot see as it is
on the roof!
Breakfast’ on Saturday 5th April at the Victory Hall,
South Zeal. You are invited to partake of a variety of
delicious food on offer between 8.30am and 12
midday, or to just drop in for coffee and meet your
friends.
The PCC is holding a coffee morning at the Victory
Hall on Saturday 3rd May between 10am and 12
midday. This will include lovely home-made cakes to
enjoy.
One aspect of the Diocesan Carbon Fast initiative for
Lent is Churchyard Conservation. We are pleased
therefore that the PCC has adopted two important
churchyard policies. The first is the St Andrew’s
Conservation and Biodiversity Management Plan
which will enable us to maintain the churchyard in a
way that respects our visitors while protecting and
nurturing the flora and fauna. Our Churchyard Open
Morning will be held alongside the Church House
Market on Saturday 12th April, 10am to 12 midday.
This will allow us to share our plans with parishioners.
We would like to give advance notice of our Church
Summer Fête on the afternoon of Saturday 7th
June. There will be a range of stalls and lots of
activities for children. Hope to see you there.
Now would be an ideal time to think about registering
for a great week for all the family at New Wine in
early August. (See the notice on page 15.) Contact
Alison if you are interested at [email protected]/uk
to find out more or go to the website
www.new-wine.org .
The second is our local Grave Tribute Policy which
has been informed by the recently updated Diocese of
Exeter Churchyard Regulations (2013). Copies of
both documents are displayed on the Church notice
board.
Church Bingo at the Victory Hall, South Zeal will be
on Tuesday 29th April and Tuesday 27th May from
7.30 pm.
The Church is participating in an excellent event put
together by the residents of South Tawton. The aim
of the Village Discovery Day on Saturday 17th May
is to put people in touch with each other and inform
them about local organisations, groups and facilities.
Future new residents will benefit enormously from a
Welcome Pack that is being compiled.
Tony Fey’s Drainpipe Quiz nights will be at the Seven
Stars, South Tawton from 7.30pm on Sunday 13th
April and Sunday 11th May. All are welcome, as
always.

Castle Drogo – Inside Out
Hello everyone
What a couple of months filled with highs and lows! The biggest high was the Time Team special
about Edwin Lutyens. I hope you all saw it. Drogo had a starring role and the castle looked magnificent. The low has to be the weather. The winter storms really gave us a battering. No doubt many of
you saw the ever increasing holes in our scaffolding. They seemed to get bigger every time the wind
blew. Despite all this, the structure of the scaffolding coped really well.
Save the date!
On Friday 16th May (6pm – 9pm) we have a brand new event called Drogo Spring Fling. This event is
being led by our brilliant Youth Panel as part of Museums at Night. This free event for all local people
is a chilled out and relaxed evening where you are invited to bring a picnic, wander around the gardens and castle, enjoy some live music and play our wide range of traditional games. We are doing
this on a shoestring, so if you are in a band and would like to come up and perform for free, please get
in touch with me. We will also be having a pudding club where anyone can enter a cake/pudding/
dessert of their choice, to be judged before being sold off to help raise money towards the building
project. The winning entry will be given a free family cream tea in our lovely café.
There is no need to book tickets but it would be extremely helpful to us if you would drop me an email
to let me know if you are planning to come along. That way we can be fully prepared. Please spread
the word.
Hope to see you all very soon.
Best wishes,
Paula
