SAT Information
You should plan on taking the SAT at least once during your
junior year. The testing dates and registration deadlines are
listed below. You can register at www.collegeboard.org. The
registration fee is $51.00. Fee Waivers are available for
qualifying students. Waivers cannot be used for late
registration. Eligible students can receive one waiver their
junior year and one waiver their senior year. You can prepare
for the SAT by reviewing your PSAT results (which comes with
study suggestion) or online at www.collegeboard.com or
www.cfnc.org. You can also sign up to receive the question of
the day at www.sat.collegeboard.com/practice/sat-question-ofthe-day.

ACT Information
Every 11th grade student will take the ACT Plus Writing for free
in March. This score can be used for college admissions so it is
important that you make the most of this opportunity. You can
prepare for the exam by using your PLAN results from your 10th
grade year as well as free online study prep at
www.actstudent.org and at www.cfnc.org. If you register to take
the ACT, please remember to register for the ACT Plus Writing.
Colleges will not accept ACT scores without a writing score. You
can register for the exam at www.actstudent.org. The
registration fee is $52.50. Fee waivers are available to juniors
and seniors. Please see your counselor to determine eligibility.

A&F Scholarship Opportunity
A&F Scholarship – Juniors can apply for the $1000 scholarship
at www.abbottandfenner.com. Deadline to apply is June 14,
2014.
Summer Ventures in Science and Math
Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics is a cost free,
state funded program for academically talented NC residents
who have demonstrated interest in science and mathematics
and aspire to a career in science, technology, engineering or
math. The program brings rising juniors and seniors
together in a residential setting for research and intensive
study. The program is currently hosted at four campuses of
the university system – Appalachian State University, East
Carolina University, NC Central University, and University
of NC at Charlotte. This is a four week program and
students must attend the entire four weeks. Applications are
available online at www.summerventures.org. Application
deadline is January 31st.
LENS @ Wake Forest
LENS @ Wake Forest 2014 is now accepting applications for
the summer 2014 program. LENS provides a challenging
academic experience integrated with hands on activities and
off site excursions. Applications are available at
www.lens.wfu.edu/
Elon University Junior Scholars Program
Elon University is proud to recognize NC high school juniors
for superior academic achievement and exceptional
extracurricular and community involvement in areas that
are highly valued as part of an Elon education. Students
who receive this award will receive early admissions decision
to Elon and a Presidential Scholarship valued at $18,000
upon acceptance to the university. Qualified applicants
must have an “A” average and a combined SAT score of at
least a 1900 or an ACT score of 29 or higher. Applicants
must also excel in one or more of the following: academics,
leadership, community service, international experiences,
the arts, athletics, or entrepreneurial endeavors.
Applications are available in Mrs. Creasman’s office or
online at www.elon.edu/applynow. The deadline to submit
an application is February 10, 2014.
NCAA Eligibility
The NCAA recommends that student-athletes register at the
beginning of their junior year in high school, but many
students register after their junior year. There is no
registration deadline, but students must be cleared by the
Eligibility Center before they receive athletic scholarships or
compete at a Division I or II institution. Students should
have their SAT or ACT scores forwarded directly to the
Eligibility Center by using code “9999”. You can request for
these scores to be sent at the time of registration.
Remember that you must have a GPA of a 2.3 to be eligible
to play college sports. For more information, please see your
coach or counselor. You can also find out more info and
register at www.ncaaeligibilitycenter.org. There is a
registration fee of $70. Waivers are available for qualifying
students.
Open House
Visiting colleges and universities is a great way to learn
about what a school has to offer and whether or not it will be
the right school for you. For a comprehensive list of

2014 JFK Profile in Courage Essay Contest
The contest challenges high school students to discover new profiles in courage, and to research and write about acts of political
courage that occurred after the 1956 publication of John F. Kennedy's Profiles in Courage. The winner of the competitive annual
contest is awarded a $10,000 prize and is invited to accept the award at the Profile in Courage Award ceremony held each May at
the Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston. Detailed essay requirements can be found at www. Jfklibrary.org. The
deadline to apply is January 6, 2014.
7th Annual Create-a-Greeting-Card Contest
Students must submit a unique photo, piece of artwork, or computer graphic for the front of a greeting card. The winner will
receive a $10,000 scholarship!!!!! A complete list of contest rules and submission guidelines can be found at
www.gallerycollection.com/greeting-cards-scholarship.htm. Deadline for submission is January 14, 2014.

Are you Making the Grades?
There are new admissions requirements to the 16 UNC Public Universities. In order to be considered for admissions you must
meet these minimum requirements.
2.5 Weighted GPA
800 SAT Score (Verbal and Math Only) OR
17 ACT Composite Score
Please keep in mind that most colleges will have higher requirements because they are more competitive. For example, based on
recent admissions data (retrieved from www.act.org), high school seniors that were accepted to the following schools had on
average:
