2014 September- December Hike Schedule
CLUB RULES
 Each hiker is responsible for his or her own safety.
 Do not attempt any hike beyond your ability.
 Ask the leader to describe the hike.
 Consider that any hike over 8 miles is Strenuous.
 Wear an orange vest or hat during hunting season.
 Sign in before the hike - add emergency phone number.
 Notify Leader of any injury or illness.
 Do not hike ahead of leader without specific permission.
 Offer driver gas money as noted in the hike description.
 Do not bring pets on hikes unless noted on the schedule.
HIKES WILL MEET AT UNIVERSITY SQUARE SHOPPING CENTER - the shopping center on
the west side of Poinsett Highway, 2 mi. north of Cherrydale and 1 mi. south of Furman University. Meet
on the Publix side of McDonalds.
Saturdays: Leave promptly at 8:30 A.M. unless otherwise noted. Bring water, lunch and wear suitable
clothing (sturdy footwear).
Sundays: Leave promptly at 1:30 P.M. unless otherwise noted. Bring water, a snack and wear suitable
clothing (sturdy footwear). Return times for Sunday hikes are approximate

HIKE 1
GREEN RIVER COVE TRAIL
Starting at the bridge on the Green River Road, it is a nice hike along the Green River as it goes
from slow/shallow to fast whitewater. Intersect with Pulliam Creek Trail for final descent to
river. Lunch will be on boulders by river. There may be kayakers for entertainment.

LITTLE HUMP MOUNTAIN--AT
NOTE: EARLY DEPARTURE AT 8:00AM
Form carpools at University Square Shopping Center and meet leaders at the fruit stand
(Peach Patch) on the right hand side of highway at intersection of Hwy 25 and Hwy 11 at
8:15.
Hike will begin at Carvers Gap on the NC/TN line and follow the Appalachian Trail to Little
Hump Mountain in the Roan Highlands. Cross Round Bald and Jane Bald with beautiful views.
Continue on to Little Hump and return by the same way. Woods and open areas, lots of ups and
downs but well worth the drive and effort.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 7
DUPONT – ROCK QUARRY LOOP
From Corn Mill Shoals Access, we hike Wilkie, Micajah, and Buck Ridge Rd trails to the edge
of the property, then back-track to the old rock quarry. After enjoying the view, we will return
by way of Rock Quarry Rd, Twixt, Longside, and Corn Mill Shoal trails.

HIKE 1
PETROGLYPHS AND DRAWBAR CLIFFS
We will begin above The Rock Golf Course off Hwy.11 and pick up the Palmetto Trail. Then
take an old logging road up to the ridge to the petroglyphs with a nice view and debate their
authenticity. Continue on the Foothills Trail to Drawbar Cliffs for lunch and enjoy the view.
Return the same way with a short side trip to see some impressive rock formations.

RIM OF THE GAP
From Jones Gap we will ascend the Rim of the Gap trail. The trail, which hugs rock faces and
crosses waterfalls, has cable handholds and short ladders for security along the way. Return via
Cold Spring Branch and Jones Gap trails.

HIKE 1:
PISGAH NF – SLATE ROCK CREEK-PILOT COVE
NOTE: 10:00 START TIME. Form carpools at University Square Shopping Center and
meet hike leader at Pisgah Ranger Station at 11:00 am.
Starting from Yellow Gap Road, we have a moderate climb up Slate Rock Creek to its head
waters followed by a swift descent on Pilot Cove trail. You will enjoy a wonderful view from
the rock bluff at the top. Short shuttle required.

HIKE 2:
LAKE CONESTEE NATURE PARK
NOTE: Meet at the Pavilion in Conestee Park, 840 Mauldin Rd, Greenville (Next to the
Old G-Braves Stadium)
We will hike through some of the various trails in the park and experience the different habitats
including the three lakes with observation decks, wetlands, the Reedy River, mixed hardwoods,
and pines. Restrooms are available at the Pavilion.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 19-21
ANNUAL GNHA CAMPOUT EXTRAVAGANZA
A weekend full of hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park! We will camp at BIG
CREEK group campground in the Smokies. (take Waterville Rd. exit off I-40, at the Tenn. line)
Arrive early on Friday, and after we set up, we will do a short hike to Midnight hole. Saturday
we will hike to Mt. Sterling (M;11 EG:4000 R:VVS). There are interesting forest changes along
the way, and a fire tower on top! Those that prefer a shorter hike can do an out-and-back on the
nearby AT.
Sunday we will pack up, and hike on your own.
BRING: $5.00 camping fee per person, an appetizer to share for "Happy Hour" before dinner on
Saturday, a stick of firewood for the campfire, and 360degree smiles!!!!

HIKE 1
CAESARS HEAD – COLD SPRINGS TRAIL/ TOM MILLER TRAIL
We start at the Raven Cliff parking lot, hike the Cold Springs Trail to meet up with the Jones
Gap (#1) Trail. Lunch at the Waterfall. Then up the Tom Miller Trail (the ending is steep uphill)
to our cars.

BLACK ROCK MOUNTAIN--- GEORGIA
NOTE: 8 AM START TIME
Black Rock State Park, near Clayton, GA, straddles the Eastern Continental Divide at over 3600
feet. We will hike the 7.2 mile James E. Edmonds Backcountry trail then lunch at the Lookoff
Mtn. overlook with view of valley. Time permitting; we will also do the 2.3 mile Tennessee
Rock trail with many ups and downs and two tough climbs. Hike is worth the time and drive for
great views of NC,SC and GA.

HIKE 1:
SALUDA – GREEN RIVER COVE
NOTE: 10:00 START TIME
We will follow the Green River as it goes from slow to fast whitewater. We will descend to the
river where we will relax on the boulders at the river’s edge. With some luck, we may see some
kayakers come through for entertainment.

DUPONT – SHEEP MOUNTAIN
From Corn Mill Shoals access, hike follows Longside and Pine Tree trails to Sheep Mountain.
Hike ends at the High Falls access where you may tour the new Visitors Center. Short shuttle
required.

HIKE 1
BAD CREEK TO THOMPSON RIVER
We cross the Whitewater River and hike along well defined trail to the Thompson River where
we lunch. Frequent ups and down contribute to strenuous rating. Beautiful hike at any season.

MT. LECONTE VIA ALUM CAVE TRAIL
NOTE: EARLY DEPARTURE 7:30 A.M.
Mt. LeConte and back in one day! Alum Cave is the most spectacular of the 5 trails leading to
the top of Mt. LeConte. At 2.3 miles the trail passes under the Alum Cave Bluff and at 5.5 miles
we reach the top (6593’) with an elevation gain of 2750’. Remember, it can be warm at the
bottom of the mountain and cold on top. This is a great opportunity to see one of America’s
prettiest mountains. We hope to be on the trail between 10:30 and 11:00 a.m. and be off the
mountain between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. Dinner on the way home is optional.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 28
CLEMSON – SIX MILE CREEK – LAKE ISSAQUEENA
We will hike the Six Mile Creek Trail in the Clemson Experimental Forest. The trail is about 3.6
miles and includes four wet stream crossings. Prepare for wet feet or take provisions to stay dry.
We will then drive over to Falls Shelter and do the West Lake Trail for some views of Lake
Issaqueena and the dam. With some luck, we might watch swimmers sliding off the dam.

HIKE 1
COME WALK THE HIGH COUNTRY.
A loop hike. From FS 816, we will climb Black Balsam and Tennent Mountains, then down to
Ivestor Gap and return via Graveyard Ridge and Mountains to Sea trails. Great views, some easy
climbs; the complete hike is above 5000 feet elevation.

BAD CREEK TO UPPER WHITE WATER FALLS AND ROUND MOUNTAIN
From Bad Creek Parking Area we hike to the Foothills Trail follow White Water River upstream
and go to Round Mtn. Gap where we take the old FHT, looping around to Upper Whitewater
Falls. From the observation deck we rejoin the FHT and return to Bad Creek.

SASSAFRAS MTN OVERLOOK VIA CHIMNEY TOP GAP ACCESS
Starting at Chimney Top Gap Access just above Rocky Bottom, SC, hike the Foothills trail to the
summit of Sassafras Mountain. We’ll enjoy a beautiful view from the new overlook. This will
be a downhill stroll back to the cars.

TRAIL MAINTENANCE---PALMETTO TRAIL
NOTE: 8:00AM START TIME
We will work on a section of the Palmetto Trail in the mountain area. Specific location and task
will be determined closer to the date by the Palmetto Conservation Foundation (PCF) staff. Tools
supplied by the PCF. Bring snacks, lunch, water, other necessary items, WORK GLOVES and a
big smile. Last spring we had a good turn out and got a lot accomplished on the work day, let's
do it again and give back to the trails we enjoy. Please call leader ahead to sign up, thanks.

SHINING ROCK THE HARD WAY
NOTE: EARLY DEPARTURE AT 8:00 A.M.
Form carpools at University Square Shopping Center and meet leader at Pisgah Ranger
Station on US 276 about 1 mile north of the intersection of US 276 and US 64 at 9:00 A.M.
Starting at the Big East Fork Parking Lot on US 276 north of the Blue Ridge Parkway we will
take the Shining Creek and Old Butt Knob Trails to the Shining Rock summit. We will return on
Art Loeb and Shining Creek Trails. There should be outstanding views of the Shining Rock
Wilderness from Shining Rock. Also, the Shining Creek Trail follows Shining Creek much of
the way with beautiful cascades and small waterfalls.
This is a wilderness hike limited to 10. Contact the leader to reserve a place.

PETROGLYPHS VIA PALMETTO TRAIL – SHORT ROUTE
Starting from “The Rock at Jocassee,” we connect with the Palmetto Trail; then onward along an
old logging road that takes us up the ridge to the Petroglyph site. There are about 600
petroglyphs on the outcrop and excellent views. Return via the same route.

HIKE 1
PARIS MOUNTAIN STATE PARK
NOTE: 10:00 START TIME
Meet leader at the park. Go up Paris Mountain Road past Sulphur Springs Shelter to the
top. Turn right on Camp Buckhorn Rd, new overflow parking is about 300 yards on left.
We will do a loop hike consisting of Sulphur Springs, Kanuga, Pipsissewa and Brissey Ridge
trails.

From Yellow Gap Rd we will hike Pilot Cove to Laurel Mountain and then descend to Slate
Rock. Nice view from Pilot Rock, followed by expansive valley views from Slate Rock.
Make an intermediate stop at the Pisgah Ranger Station about 9-9:15AM.

SUNDAY, OCT OBER 19
HIKE 1:
CHATTOOGA RIVER – WATERFALL RAMBLE - KEY SWAP
NOTE: 9:30 START TIME
Hike follows the Foothills Trail along the Chattooga River to visit Pigpen, Licklog, Big Bend
and King Creek falls. This is a key swap hike. All hikers will meet at the entrance to Cherry
Hill Campground at 10:45 where drivers will swap cars and passengers and then drive to your
trail head to start hiking. Up river hikers will drive to Nicholson Ford access and hike upriver to
Burrell’s Ford access. Concurrently, down river hikers will drive to Burrell’s Ford access and
hike down river to Nicholson Ford Access. Hikers will pass en-route and exchange keys.
Pre-hike registration is required. New hikers must call the Hike Leader to gain clearance to hike.
Prior to departure at University Square, carpools will be arranged by hike legs. Other hikers
must coordinate with the Hike Leader if you are meeting the group at Cherry Hill Campground.

HIKE 1
CROWDERS MOUNTAIN STATE PARK
Meet at Earthfare on Pelham road at 8:30
We will re-group at McDonald’s in Gaffney at I-85 and SC11
We hike scrambling thru a rock garden to the summit with great views of the countryside, where
rock climbers frequent, lunch at the fire tower, then return to the visitors center down a wide
open trail thru the forest.

DANIEL RIDGE AREA - PISGAH NATIONAL FOREST.
This clockwise, loop-hike is a combination of old road beds and trails including Daniel Ridge,
Caney Bottom and Cove Creek. Hike along the rushing Davidson River, view 2 waterfalls and
enjoy a variety of trail surfaces and forest scenery. There are at least two long ascents and some
narrow side-slope and rooty trail sections. The hike will be at a moderate pace.

TABLE ROCK – CARRICK CREEK PLUS
Hike starts on Carrick Creek trail; then we will take a side trip up the Pinnacle Trail to Carrick
Creek falls, then return to finish the Carrick Creek trail loop.

HIKE 1
ELLICOTT ROCK FROM BULL PEN ROAD.
An in-and-out hike, the shortest trail to Ellicott Rock, at the tri-section of NC, SC and GA on the
Wild and Scenic Chattooga River. A little local history thrown in. Weather and river level
permitting, we will identify all three markers. But why three?

LITTLE SAM AND SAM KNOB
From Hwy. 215 we will climb the Mountains To The Sea Trail and take a side trip to Devil’s
Courthouse, then loop around Little Sam Knob with a climb up Sam Knob.

UPPER AND LOWER WHITEWATER FALLS
NOTE: 10:00 START TIME
Hike starts on the Foothills Trail at NC 281 to the overlook of the Upper Whitewater Falls for a
spectacular view before descending and following the Whitewater River to the Lower
Whitewater Falls. Return to the Bad Creek parking area. Shuttle required.

This hike will begin and end at Camp Old Indian. Along the way, we will stop at the old
Poinsett Bridge built in 1820. With some luck, the leaves will be in their peak.

CAMP OLD INDIAN LOOP

We will hike the trails of Camp Old Indian including a visit to the historic Poinsett Bridge and
onward to the peak of Old Indian Mountain. After our break, we will descend to see the east side
waterfall and finish on the east perimeter trail.

Form carpools at University Square Shopping Center and meet leaders at the fruit stand

One group will begin at Orchard Lake Campground near Saluda, NC and hike the Poinsett
Passage. The other group will begin near Lake Lanier, Tryon, NC and hike the Blue Wall
Passage. There is a key swap somewhere in passing on the trail so everyone has a ride at the end.

We will hike the steep climbers trail to the Stool and then across the saddle to the base of Table
Rock. Great Fall views overlooking the Table Rock watershed! Be prepared for rope assists.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15
HIKE 1
SALUDA MOUNTAIN PASSAGE --PALMETTO TRAIL
Meet at University Square Shopping Center to form carpools. Take Hwy 25N and turn off onto
old Hwy 25 through the Greenville watershed. Continue on Old Hwy 25 past turn for Saluda to
the Talisman Camp at the border of SC/NC. Turn left at camp, drive short downhill to first right
turn to parking lot/trailhead. Meet leader at trailhead. Palmetto Trail signs present. Short shuttle
required. We will hike the Saluda Mountain Passage of the Palmetto Trail which skirts along
watershed property. Until the Palmetto Trail was allowed to go through this area, this was
forbidden territory. Hopefully fall color and some views. Leader is a Palmetto Trail staff
member.

couple of pretty waterfalls.

BLUE WALL PRESERVE
From the Blue Wall Preserve parking area, our hike will be along the Blue Wall Passage
(section) of the Palmetto Trail. We will walk between two (2) large ponds and observe the
handiwork of the local beaver population. Although difficult to see, there are two (2) waterfalls
near the ponds. This is primarily a peaceful walk through a hardwood forest along a small creek
bed. This property, located in the “Dark Corner” of Greenville County, is partially owned by The
Nature Conservancy. We will discuss the history of the property as we walk up to Vaughns Gap,
which is located between Hog Back Mountain and Rocky Spur. We will return to our cars by the
same route.

PINNACLE MOUNTAIN SUMMIT AND WEST ESCARPMENT
The hike begins on the Palmetto Trail near Camp Adger Road access. We will ascend toward
Pinnacle Mountain summit stopping for a beautiful view of Horse Mountain and Rock Mountain
from the petroglyphs bald and Drawbar Cliffs. After summiting Pinnacle Mountain, we will
descend off trail to the west escarpment of Pinnacle Mountain to a bald that can only be seen
from Emory Gap Toll Road and Rock Mountain. Continuing to descend, we will connect with
the Foothills Trail and ascend to Emory Gap. We will take a short off trail connector to Emory
Gap Toll Road which will connect to Camp Adger Road. If you like plenty of creek crossings
and mountain views, you will enjoy this hike. Call hike leader before signing up for this hike.

SASSAFRAS TO BEASLEY GAP
From the Sassafras Mountain parking lot we will hike east on the Foothills Trail to Poplar
Hollow. The hike will then head west off the FH trail to Round Top Mountain for a unique view
of Sassafras Mountain, Little Caesars Head Mountain and Rocky Bottom. Crossing over to Rock
Mountain, we will find a beautiful unique view of Pinnacle Mountain from the northwest.
Descending to Poplar Hollow Road we will then cross over Horse Mountain to Beasley Gap and
shuttle back to Sassafras Mountain. Shuttle required.
This hike requires at least two hikers.

NEW YEAR'S DAY 10:00AM
Once again, we plan to start the New Year off with a fun gathering for hiking and Hobo Stew.
Meet at Paris Mountain State Park at Sulphur Springs Shelter #5. State Park admission fee
required. We will have two hikes, one shorter, both leaving from the shelter around 10:00 am.
Leaders and trails to be determined. Bring a can of VEGETABLES for the stew and an extra
non-perishable food item to be donated to a food pantry.
We will have Hobo Stew after the hikes around 12:00 noon. Tom Parlier, the Iron Chef of
Rosman, in control of the stew.
Please bring a dessert or cornbread to share with others. BYOS (spoon), it is real messy without
a spoon. We will use the empty cans as bowls. MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!
