Intersect with Pulliam Creek Trail for final descent to river. Lunch will be on boulders by river. There may be kayakers for entertainment. Hike will begin at Carvers Gap on the NC/TN line and follow the Appalachian Trail to Little Hump Mountain in the Roan Highlands. Cross Round Bald and Jane Bald with beautiful views. Continue on to Little Hump and return by the same way. Woods and open areas, lots of ups and downs but well worth the drive and effort. After enjoying the view, we will return by way of Rock Quarry Rd, Twixt, Longside, and Corn Mill Shoal trails. Then take an old logging road up to the ridge to the petroglyphs with a nice view and debate their authenticity. Continue on the Foothills Trail to Drawbar Cliffs for lunch and enjoy the view. Return the same way with a short side trip to see some impressive rock formations. Starting from Yellow Gap Road, we have a moderate climb up Slate Rock Creek to its head waters followed by a swift descent on Pilot Cove trail. We will camp at BIG CREEK group campground in the Smokies. (take Waterville Rd. exit off I-40, at the Tenn. line) Arrive early on Friday, and after we set up, we will do a short hike to Midnight hole. Saturday we will hike to Mt. Sterling (M;11 EG:4000 R:VVS). There are interesting forest changes along the way, and a fire tower on top! Those that prefer a shorter hike can do an out-and-back on the nearby AT. Sunday we will pack up, and hike on your own. Lunch at the Waterfall. Then up the Tom Miller Trail (the ending is steep uphill) to our cars. We will hike the 7.2 mile James E. Edmonds Backcountry trail then lunch at the Lookoff Mtn. overlook with view of valley. Time permitting; we will also do the 2.3 mile Tennessee Rock trail with many ups and downs and two tough climbs. Hike is worth the time and drive for great views of NC,SC and GA. Frequent ups and down contribute to strenuous rating. Beautiful hike at any season. LeConte and back in one day! Alum Cave is the most spectacular of the 5 trails leading to the top of Mt. LeConte. At 2.3 miles the trail passes under the Alum Cave Bluff and at 5.5 miles we reach the top (6593’) with an elevation gain of 2750’. Remember, it can be warm at the bottom of the mountain and cold on top. This is a great opportunity to see one of America’s prettiest mountains. We hope to be on the trail between 10:30 and 11:00 a.m. and be off the mountain between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. Dinner on the way home is optional. The trail is about 3.6 miles and includes four wet stream crossings. Prepare for wet feet or take provisions to stay dry. We will then drive over to Falls Shelter and do the West Lake Trail for some views of Lake Issaqueena and the dam. With some luck, we might watch swimmers sliding off the dam. From FS 816, we will climb Black Balsam and Tennent Mountains, then down to Ivestor Gap and return via Graveyard Ridge and Mountains to Sea trails. HIKE 2 BAD CREEK TO UPPER WHITE WATER FALLS AND ROUND MOUNTAIN From Bad Creek Parking Area we hike to the Foothills Trail follow White Water River upstream and go to Round Mtn. Gap where we take the old FHT, looping around to Upper Whitewater Falls. From the observation deck we rejoin the FHT and return to Bad Creek. We’ll enjoy a beautiful view from the new overlook. This will be a downhill stroll back to the cars. Form carpools at University Square Shopping Center and meet leader at Pisgah Ranger Station on US 276 about 1 mile north of the intersection of US 276 and US 64 at 9:00 A.M. Starting at the Big East Fork Parking Lot on US 276 north of the Blue Ridge Parkway we will take the Shining Creek and Old Butt Knob Trails to the Shining Rock summit. We will return on Art Loeb and Shining Creek Trails. There should be outstanding views of the Shining Rock Wilderness from Shining Rock. Also, the Shining Creek Trail follows Shining Creek much of the way with beautiful cascades and small waterfalls. This is a wilderness hike limited to 10. Contact the leader to reserve a place. There are about 600 petroglyphs on the outcrop and excellent views. Return via the same route. This is a key swap hike. All hikers will meet at the entrance to Cherry Hill Campground at 10:45 where drivers will swap cars and passengers and then drive to your trail head to start hiking. Up river hikers will drive to Nicholson Ford access and hike upriver to Burrell’s Ford access. Concurrently, down river hikers will drive to Burrell’s Ford access and hike down river to Nicholson Ford Access. Hikers will pass en-route and exchange keys. Pre-hike registration is required. New hikers must call the Hike Leader to gain clearance to hike. Prior to departure at University Square, carpools will be arranged by hike legs. Other hikers must coordinate with the Hike Leader if you are meeting the group at Cherry Hill Campground. This clockwise, loop-hike is a combination of old road beds and trails including Daniel Ridge, Caney Bottom and Cove Creek. Hike along the rushing Davidson River, view 2 waterfalls and enjoy a variety of trail surfaces and forest scenery. There are at least two long ascents and some narrow side-slope and rooty trail sections. The hike will be at a moderate pace. After our break, we will descend to see the east side waterfall and finish on the east perimeter trail. One group will begin at Orchard Lake Campground near Saluda, NC and hike the Poinsett Passage. The other group will begin near Lake Lanier, Tryon, NC and hike the Blue Wall Passage. There is a key swap somewhere in passing on the trail so everyone has a ride at the end. Take Hwy 25N and turn off onto old Hwy 25 through the Greenville watershed. Continue on Old Hwy 25 past turn for Saluda to the Talisman Camp at the border of SC/NC. Turn left at camp, drive short downhill to first right turn to parking lot/trailhead. Meet leader at trailhead. Palmetto Trail signs present. Short shuttle required. We will hike the Saluda Mountain Passage of the Palmetto Trail which skirts along watershed property. Until the Palmetto Trail was allowed to go through this area, this was forbidden territory. Hopefully fall color and some views. Leader is a Palmetto Trail staff member. This is an easy hike after a short uphill climb at the beginning. You’ll see a couple of pretty waterfalls. We will walk between two (2) large ponds and observe the handiwork of the local beaver population. Although difficult to see, there are two (2) waterfalls near the ponds. This is primarily a peaceful walk through a hardwood forest along a small creek bed. This property, located in the “Dark Corner” of Greenville County, is partially owned by The Nature Conservancy. We will discuss the history of the property as we walk up to Vaughns Gap, which is located between Hog Back Mountain and Rocky Spur. We will return to our cars by the same route. We will ascend toward Pinnacle Mountain summit stopping for a beautiful view of Horse Mountain and Rock Mountain from the petroglyphs bald and Drawbar Cliffs. After summiting Pinnacle Mountain, we will descend off trail to the west escarpment of Pinnacle Mountain to a bald that can only be seen from Emory Gap Toll Road and Rock Mountain. Continuing to descend, we will connect with the Foothills Trail and ascend to Emory Gap. We will take a short off trail connector to Emory Gap Toll Road which will connect to Camp Adger Road. The hike will then head west off the FH trail to Round Top Mountain for a unique view of Sassafras Mountain, Little Caesars Head Mountain and Rocky Bottom. Crossing over to Rock Mountain, we will find a beautiful unique view of Pinnacle Mountain from the northwest. Descending to Poplar Hollow Road we will then cross over Horse Mountain to Beasley Gap and shuttle back to Sassafras Mountain. Shuttle required. This hike requires at least two hikers. Meet at Paris Mountain State Park at Sulphur Springs Shelter #5. State Park admission fee required. We will have two hikes, one shorter, both leaving from the shelter around 10:00 am. Leaders and trails to be determined. Bring a can of VEGETABLES for the stew and an extra non-perishable food item to be donated to a food pantry. We will have Hobo Stew after the hikes around 12:00 noon. Tom Parlier, the Iron Chef of Rosman, in control of the stew. Please bring a dessert or cornbread to share with others.
