Alumni Development & University Relations (ADUR)
Sub-Committee
The ADUR has been formed to develop and cultivate the strong bonds between
the alumni community and NUSS, foster a strong relationship with NUS students,
the management and administration and promote future development with NUS.
To achieve these goals, ADUR has been constantly reviewing existing works,
seeking new opportunities and embarking on projects to enrich the experience of
NUSS members and promote their engagement with people with different
experiences and cultures.
Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music
Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore (YSTCM),
offers a unique and adventurous 21st century Asian environment in which we
train and educate performers, composers and recording engineers. For 10 years,
this education has enabled over 280 students of YSTCM to take advantage of
future professional and artistic opportunities worldwide. YSTCM is moving
forward.
Originally established in partnership with the Peabody Institute of The Johns
Hopkins University, and founded as the Singapore Conservatory of Music, the
Conservatory is distinctively international in terms of its faculty, student
population and artistic outlook. The Conservatory’s mission is to be a focal point
for musical activity, artistic development and research, both for Singapore and
the Asia-Pacific region, contributing to Singapore’s global position.
The Conservatory offers a four-year, full-time undergraduate Bachelor of Music
degree programme, with a strong focus on music performance, composition, and
recording arts and science, supported by a well-balanced and integrated
academic curriculum. The Conservatory also offers the Master of Music
programme as well as a small Young Artist Programme for aspiring Singaporean
performers still in school. Classes are conducted by a distinguished faculty drawn
from over 10 countries.

Beyond the Score: Mozart – The Start-Up
The NUSS-YSTCM Music Appreciation Series is an initiative by ADUR in
collaboration with YSTCM which aims to provide attendees an insight to the art
of music appreciation and an avenue for intellectual discourse.
For our inaugural event, we will be placing our focus on Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart. Mozart’s move permanently to Vienna in the early 1780s sparked not
only a period of compositional creativity, but also, in him, a new way of thinking
about the position and role of a musician in a society. In this presentation,
Professor Bernard Lanskey, the Director of Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music,
National University of Singapore, will lead in exploring some of the issues Mozart
faced as a newly married entrepreneur starting up. The presentation explores
the consequences of this development as evident in two ensemble works from
the period, the Piano Concerto in E-flat, K449 and the Quintet for Piano and
Winds, K452, performed by students from YSTCM.
Pre-dinner drinks will be followed by a four-course meal interspersed with
discussion and performances. Each of the four presentations (after drinks and
each course culminating in a performance at the end) would be approximately
10-15 minutes.
