WTF & UNCLE’S UFO Big Winners
Harpswell Races Canceled - Long Island Races Now Points Race
In the last race of the day LITTLE GIRLS and WTF battle it out and it was WTF coming out on top by less than a boat length.
STONINGTON – There is no question that the biggest
event of the lobster boat racing season is Stonington
race. There are a number of reasons for its popularity.
It is centrally located on the coast of Maine; it has a
great race course, right down the centre of Deer Isle
Thoroughfare just off the town; it has an incredible
dance party the night before that is not for light-weights;
and the prizes are great. This year the big prize was a
14-foot Carolina Skiff with a Yamaha outboard and that
was drawing a lot of entrants.
Lobster boat racing has been blessed this year
with great weather. As sign ups started we had bright
sunshine and a cool sea breeze. The entrants began
signing up just before 0800 and were still coming in
after 1000. For the last three years they have been in the
low 90s for participants and when signups were done
we had 108 racers this year.

There were a number of new boats that showed up.
In the first race of the day, Work Boat Class A, Robbie
Eaton entered MAKING KNOTS, a 12-foot Surry
powered with a 25-hp Yamaha outboard. In Work Boat

Greenlaw of Portland. Dick Eaton of Stonington entered
a Kenway 15, 50-hp. In Work Boat Class C Jacob Hardy
of Deer Isle entered his LITTLE ROW, a 20-footer
with a 90-hp Johnson. Dale Haley, Jr. of Stonington
brought ROWDY & RECKLESS, a Seaway 18, 90-hp
Yamaha. Avery Waterman of North Haven came over

D, Richard Quinn of Stonington entered SEA KING,
an Atlantic 21, 150-hp Mariner. Stuart Bray of Deer
Isle came with NATURAL DRIFT, a 24-footer, 150-

hp Yamaha. Grayson Demoors of North Haven brought
KRISTIAN JAMES, a Seaway 19, 115-hp Yamaha.
Carroll Staples of Swan’s Island sold MOTIVATION
[Duffy 37; 900-hp Mack] and purchased AGE QOUN
AGIS, which is a Dixon 45, 800-hp Caterpillar. He
entered her in the Novi Race. Another change in the
Novi Race was Jared Gove of Deer Isle, who sold his
Webber’s Cove 34 DOUGH BOY and purchased a 32foot Novi, 225-hp John Deere, which is also known as
DOUGH BOY.
In the John’s Bay Boat Company race there were
several new boats signed up. Adam Eaton of Stonington
signed up his TWILIGHT, a 40-footer with a 425hp John Deere. He formerly owned the Novi MISS
SAILOR, which had to be quite a change. Ben Weed
of Deer Isle entered EMMA & ANDREW, a 44-footer
built in 2013. Ben Nutter of Brooklin signed up
ACADIA, a 40-footer with a 375-hp 3208 Caterpillar.
Isaac Dworsky of Stonington entered WHISTLER, a
36-footer with a 435-hp Caterpillar. She was the former
SAND DOLLARS II built for Scott Dugas of Yarmouth
in 2002. The newest of the John’s Bay Boats was Ryan
Larrabee’s RESOLUTE, a 46-footer with an 800-hp
C18 Caterpillar, which was launched this spring.
In Gasoline Class A, Jeremy Eaton of Deer Isle
entered DOUBLE TROUBLE, a 24-footer with a 6
cylinder Chevrolet engine.
Ben Hardie of Stonington sold his Novi MAYHEM
and purchased a Crowley 32, a Crowley 28 stretched,
with a 210-hp Cummins. She would be racing in Diesel
Class B. Ronald Eaton has had a number of boats over
the years and this year he has a Crowley 33, 225-John
Deere named GLORY BOUND. She would run in Diesel
Class B. In Diesel Class D, Robin Dunham entered
SAMATHA ERIN, a Duffy 35, 315-hp Cummins. In
Diesel Class E, Chad Frazier of Stonington entered
JERICHO, a Mitchell Cove 32, 350-hp Cummins. In
Diesel Class F, we had six new boats signed up, they
were: Peter McDonald of North Haven brought over
BONNIE MAC, Wayne Beal 36, 430-hp Cummins;
HEY CAP’, a Harrison 35, 430-hp Cummins, was
entered by Larry Spencer of Stonington; Jamie Hardy
of Deer Isle signed up MISS JOANN, an Osmond 35,
430-hp Cummins; Josh Gove of Deer Isle entered SEA
WITCH, a BHM 36, 375-hp John Deere; Ethan Turner
of Deer Isle entered SOUTHEASTER, a South Shore
34, 355-hp Cummins; and James Jones of Stonington
signed up TSUNAMI, a Morgan Bay 36 (a modified
Repco 37), 410-hp Sisu. Brett Coleman’s sold his 37foot Arthur Rackliffe built boat BACK IN BLACK
and bought a RP 35, 400-Cummins, keeping the same
name, which placed him in Diesel Class F. Carl Gray
of Deer Isle sold his BHM 31 and purchased a Crowley
36, 450-hp Cummins, both named TURN THE PAGE,
and would race in Diesel Class H. In Diesel Class J,
Andrew Eaton of Deer Isle entered SHOCKAH, an
Osmond 38, 575-hp Scania. And finally there were
two new entrants in Diesel Class M: Ethan Whittaker
of Gouldsboro signed up CARPE DIEM, a Dixon 45,
750-hp John Deere; and Ben Hatch of Deer Isle brought
over LYNSEY RENAE, a Wesmac 42, 600-hp Lugger.
Richard Bubay of Stonington sold MASTER MYLES
[Webber’s Cove 34, 255-hp John Deere] and purchased
a Young Brothers 40 with a 405-hp Cummins and kept

the same name. She would race in Diesel Class M.
There were also a few changes noted. In the Novi
Class Wesley Gove entered SHENANIGANS, formerly
his JENNIE G., and noted a new engine, a 235-hp Volvo.
David Grant’s EASY MONEY [Northern Bay 28; 218hp Sisu] made it out for the first time this year. For the
last 2 years she has competed in Diesel Class A, but
they changed her horsepower from 218 to 300, which
forced her up to Diesel Class C. Danny Eaton of Deer
Isle repowered his JUSTIN TIME, an Atlantic 26. She
had a 218-hp Isuzu and now has a 270-hp FPT, which
put him in Diesel Class C. Calvin Bray of Sargentville
repowered STILL WAITING [Crowley 36] from a 225hp John Deere to a 330-hp John Deere. She was now
in Diesel Class D. HYPOCRITE, a Duffy 35 owned by
Justin Boyce of Stonington, was repowered with a 370hp Volvo and that put her in Diesel Class F.
One boat that everyone expected to see was Alfred
Osgood’s STARLIGHT EXPRESS [Northern Bay
36; 900+-hp Mack]. They have been trying to get
her running right and at last report they were still not
there. David Osgood said that they had replaced a heat
exchanger the end of last week and she went back over
Saturday night. They had not run her and when they
did they still had a small problem and when that was
corrected it was too late to race.
A crowd favourite is always Galen Alley’s
FOOLISH PLEASURE [30’ Custom; 712 Ford]. She
developed an oil pressure problem at Moosabec and is
now back at her mechanic’s shop. Hopefully she will be
ready for the next races at Winter Harbor.
Update on THUNDERBOLT she had broken some
David Grant entered his EASY MONEY in Diesel Class C
and took first in class.
David Wiberg’s SANDRA DEE, a Crowley 28 powered with a 315-hp
Cummins, powered his way to second in Diesel Class C.

teeth on her starter gear before the Moosabec races and
was also a no-show.
The first races of the day are in the Work Boat
Classes and Stonington ran four of them. In the first
race of the day, Class A (Skiffs 16-feet and under with
outboards up to 30 hp, Operator 16 years and younger)
there was only one entrant, MAKING KNOTS, and
they ran down the course by themselves for the win. In
Class B (Inboards, outboards or outdrives, 31 to 60 hp)
there were five boats on the line. One boat that we have
not seen in a while was SHIT HAPPENS, [Holland
14, 55-hp outboard] owned by Nick Wiberg. She has
always done well, and today she was being raced by
Cory McDonald. As they came up the course the faster
boats started separating themselves out. First over the
line was SHIRLEY V., followed by HAUT HAULER
and Robert Ray’s CRACKERJACK [Steury 15, 60hp Yamaha]. Poor Cory did not have a good race as
just when he started up the course he got the engine
entangled in some rockweed and had to back up to get
going again and finished fifth. A boat that has been
dominate in Class C (Inboards, outboards or outdrives,
61 to 90 hp) has been Marshall Spear’s J-BIRD [16’;
90-hp], but today he was getting a strong challenge from
Larkin Bolger’s RED ROCKET [16’; 90-hp Tohatsu].
At mid-way up the course J-BIRD had a boat length
lead and he went on for the win with a speed of 39.4
mph. Third went to Wesley Trundy’s WES EXPRESS
[16’; 70-hp Yamaha]. Class, D (CLASS D Inboards,
outboards or outdrive 91 hp and up) had four boats come
to the line, Richard Quinn’s SEA KING jumped right
out into the lead. Second was Stuart Bray’s NATURAL
DRIFT. However the real battle was for third between
Parker Murphy’s CRABBY II [Mitchell Cove 20, 50-hp
Yamaha] and Grayson Demoors KRISTIAN JAMES.
Just three boats came to the line for the Novi
Race. They were AGE QOUD AGIS, DOUGH BOY
and SHENANIGANS. When the flag dropped AGE
QUOD AGIS jumped into the lead and continued to put
distance between DOUGH BOY and SHENANIGANS.
She took first with little trouble as the other two battled
for second. As they neared the middle of the course
DOUGH BOY had a two boat length lead and held on
for second.
One of the most impressive races of the day is the
Johns Bay Boat Co. Race. Stonington has more than
a dozen John’s Bay built boats, more than any other
town on the coast and more on order. There were 10
boats entered in the race and that meant splitting the
fleet in half, run two heats, than take the top three from
each heat and run a final race. However the racers did
not want to break up the fleet and ran up all together.
First over the line was the newest boat RESOLUTE,
followed by EMMA & ANDREW and Vance Bunker’s
SARI ANN [42’ Johns Bay Boat; 660-hp Volvo]. One
prettiest boats that we had not seen so far this year is
Chris Page’s ABIGAIL & CARTER [42’ Johns Bay
Boat, 1,000-hp Caterpillar], but she was on the line
today.
Next up was the Gasoline Classes with just four
entrants, all in separate classes, with no one entered
in Gasoline Class E (V-8, Over 525 cid, 28 feet and
over, superchargers/Turbos). In Class A (Four and Six
Cylinder, 24 feet and over) was DOUBLE TROUBLE;
in Class B (Up to 375 cid, 24 feet and over) was Walter
Rich’s WIDE OPEN [26’ Robert Rich; 350 Chevrolet];
Class C (V8, 376 to 525 cid, 24 feet and over) was
Randy Durkee’s BLACK DIAMOND [Holland 32,
Stonington - Maine Lobster Boat Racing Newsletter - Page 5.
454 Chevrolet]; and in Class D (V8, 376 to 540 cid, 24
feet and over (Non-working racer)) was Shawn Alley’s
LITTLE GIRLS [28’ Calvin Beal Jr.; 514 Ford]. It was
decided to race them altogether as each would get first
in their respective classes. This did make an interesting
race with LITTLE GIRLS crossing first with WIDE
OPEN second and BLACK DIAMOND third.
Two of the gasoline racers, LITTLE GIRLS and
WIDE OPEN ran right back down to run in the Wooden
Boat Race. Five boats were on the line and any betting
person would put their money on LITTLE GIRLS.
When the flag dropped the battle was between LITTLE
GIRLS and WIDE OPEN and WIDE OPEN did their
best to push LITTLE GIRLS, but just did not have
enough to get by for the win and they crossed first and
second. Third went to Devin Haskell’s HOLLIGAN
[34’; 210-hp Caterpillar].
Next came the Diesel Classes and first up was Class
A (Up to 235 hp, 24 to 31 feet) with just two boats entered
Julie Eaton’s CAT SASS [Repco 30, 210 hp Cummins]
and George Stevens’ BOHICA [24’, 110 hp Ford] and
the winner was CAT SASS. Seven boats were on the
line for Class B (Up to 235 hp, 32 feet and over). The
battle for first was between Everett Beers’ MISS KERI
LYNNE [Mitchell Cove 32; 220-hp John Deere], Ron
Eaton’s GLORY BOUND and HOLLIGAN. Half way
down the course GLORY BOUND and HOLLIGAN
were neck and neck with MISS KERI LYNNE back
half a boat length. At the line it was HOLLIGAN
crossing first, but they were in the wrong race and the
win went to GLORY BOUND, MISS KERI LYNNE
second and Jeff Gove’s DOWNEASTER [38’; 210 hp
Cummins] third. Six boats were entered in Class C (236
to 335 hp, 24 to 33 feet) The battle for first was between
EASY MONEY and David Wiberg’s SANDRA DEE
[Crowley 28; 315-hp Cummins], but SANDRA DEE
just did not have enough to get by EASY MONEY.
There was another tight battle between Danny Eaton’s
JUSTIN TIME II and Joseph Lunt’s UNCLE BUBBA
[Osmond 32; 355-hp Cummins], but JUSTIN TIME II
kept gaining and took the third spot. In Diesel Class
D (236 to 335 hp, 34 feet and over) Cory Robertson’s
PISCUTTAH II [South Shore 34; 300-hp John Deere]
has been one of the dominate racer since 2007. She was
facing four other competitors and when the flag dropped
she jumped into the lead and now the battle was for
second. That went to Geoffrey Barrett’s LONG FACES
[Duffy 34; 226 hp Isuzu] and third was Calvin Bray’s
BONNIE MAC and BLACK VELVET in Diesel Class F.
One of the stand out performers, on and off the course, is Brent
Davis of Beals Island, owner of HEE HAW.
Carl Gray’s TURN THE PAGE took the win in Class H upsetting
Travis Otis’ FIRST TEAM.
Page 6. Maine Lobster Boat Racing Newsletter - Stonington
STILL WAITING II in a close finish. Seven boats were
on the line for Class E (336 to 435 hp, 24 to 33 feet)
and there could be an interesting battle between Ed
Shirley’s MISS KARLEE [Mitchell Cove 32, 440-hp
Sisu], Sid Eaton’s KIMBERLY BELLE [AJ-28; 370hp Volvo] and Kenton Feeney’s BAD INFLUENCE
[Holland 32, 350-hp Yanmar]. This class has been
dominated by MISS KARLEE the last two years, but in
the past KIMBERLY BELLE has been a top boat. When
they went flying by at half-way down the course MISS
KARLEE had a slight lead with KIMBERLY BELLE
and BAD INFLUENCE right on her transom. MISS
KARLEE was the first over with a speed of 35.2 mph.
Second went to KIMBERLY BELLE, third was BAD
INFLUENCE and fourth Nick Wiberg’s MISS KATIE
[Holland 31; 355 hp Cummins]. A number of the new
boats signed up before the race were in Class F (336 to
435 hp, 34 feet and over) and when totaled there were
16 boats entered. They were split into two heats and in
Heat #1 was the top racer, Ed Torosian’s MS. ROSE
[Mitchell Cove 35; 350-hp Cummins], which has been
the boat to beat in this class since 2008. He ran down
for the win with James Jones’ TSUNAMI second and
Brent Davis’ HEE HAW [Wayne Beal 34; 220-hp, John
Deere] third. Another fast boat in this class is Darren
Shute’s SEA MIST [Northern Bay 36; 430-hp Volvo]
and she won Heat #2 with Peter MacDonald’s BONNIE
MAC second and Ethan Turner’s SOUTHEASTER
third. In the finals it was all MS. ROSE with SEA MIST
back one boat length neck and neck with TSUNAMI
with SEA MIST grabbing second. There were just two
boats in Class G (436 to 550 hp, 28 to 35 feet) Todd
Ritchie’s SEACOCK [Calvin Beal 34; 436-hp Sisu]
and Jason Clough’s MISS ELIZABETH [Duffy 35;
450-hp Volvo]. SEACOCK has been the top boat in
this class since 2006 and today would be no different
as he easily took the win. Travis Otis’ FIRST TEAM
[Northern Bay 36; 410-hp Sisu 645] has been the boat
to beat in Class H (436 to 550 hp, 36 feet and over)
since 2003, but today was not going to be his day. There
were five boats on the line and as they came up the
course it was obvious that FIRST TEAM was not in the
lead. As they near midway it was TURN THE PAGE
followed by FIRST TEAM just a boat length back. It is
not usual, but a tie was handed out for third, which went
to Oscar Beal’s PAPA’S PRIDE [Wayne Beal 36; 500hp FPT] and Derrick Beal’s MISS BADONKADONK
[Wayne Beal 36; 500-hp FPT]. Next up was Diesel
Class I (551 to 700 hp, 28 to 35 feet) and if we are
talking about domination the boat that has dominated
all the races this year is Roger Kennedy’s WHISKEYTANGO-FOXTROT (WTF) [28’ Northern Bay, 560-hp
FPT]. The only other competitor in this class was Chris
Smith’s MISTY [Crowley Beal 33; 650 hp Scania],
who just did not have enough to get by for the win.
Another class that we had to split up because of too
many boats was Diesel Class J (551 to 700 hp, 36 feet
over), which had nine boats entered. In Heat #1 it was
going to be a battle between two of the classes top
boats, Scott Keenan’s DEAR ABBIE [Northern Bay
38, 610 hp Cummins] and David Myrick’s JANICE
ELAINE [Northern Bay 38; 610-hp Cummins] and
it was DEAR ABBIE who crossed first. Third went
to Brian Eaton’s DEFIANCE [South Shore 38, 660hp Caterpillar]. In Heat #2 Carl Gross’ HEY BABY
[Northern Bay 36; 610-hp Volvo] took the win with
ease with Andrew Taylor’s BLUE EYED GIRL [Calvin
Beal 36, 650-hp Scania] and David Haskell’s MOLLY
RYAN [Holland 38; 600-hp Volvo] third. Now came
the finals. Remember back to the Rockland races and
the battle between HEY BABY and JANICE ELAINE
and JANICE ELAINE got the win. This was the rematch and as they came up the course it was close, but
HEY BABY was in the lead and she was not going to
relinquish it. JANICE ELAINE took second and BLUE
EYED GIRL grabbed third. There were six boats entered
in Class K (701 to 900 hp, 28 feet and over) and this
was another race that everyone would be watching as
Andy Gove’s UNCLE’S UFO [Northern Bay 36; 900hp Mack] would go up against Cameron Crawford’s
WILD WILD WEST [West 28; 1,050-hp Isotta]. Did
WILD WILD WEST find more speed, well that was
going to be answered real soon. When they came off
the line it looked even, but soon UNCLE’S UFO had
jumped out into the lead. However WILD WILD WEST
was riding on the side of the course, but as they ran by
the mid-point she was back one boat length. When they
reached the finish line Dennis Young’s CHRISTINA &
SETH [Mitchell Cove 35, 740-hp GM] grabbed second
with WILD WILD WEST third. There were no entrants
in Class L (901 hp and over, 28 feet and over). Seven
boats were on the line for Diesel Class M (40 feet and
over, up to 750 hp). Patrick Faulkingham’s GRAMP’S
BIRD [Osmond 40; 700-hp FPT] has had some serious
competition from Dixon Smith’s SIZE MATTERS
[Libby 41; 750-hp FPT], but SIZE MATTERS was a
no-show. GRAMP’S BIRD sailed across the line with
the real battle being for second and that was between
Stonington - Maine Lobster Boat Racing Newsletter - Page 7.
James Thurlow’s FAMILY TRADITION [Osmond 42,
750-hp C13 FPT] and Baren Yurchick’s KIMBERLY
ALLISON [RP 40, 700-hp Cummins], which went to
FAMILY TRADITION. There was only two boats in
Diesel Class N (40 feet and over, 750 hp and over) and
despite having over 30 people on board the win went to
Brent Oliver’s JARSULAN IV [Wesmac 46; 1000 hp
Caterpillar] over Jeff Libby’s AUTUMN GAIL [Dixon
48, 825-hp Detroit].
It was now time for the Gasoline Free-for-All and
unless something went awry the finish would be LITTLE
GIRLS, WIDE OPEN and BLACK DIAMOND, which
is just how they finished.
The Diesel Free-for-All would be a little harder to
call. WTF was going to be hard to get by and no one
did as she crossed the finish line with a two boat length
lead. The battle was between UNCLE’S UFO and
WILD WILD WEST and as they came by the midway
point UNCLE’S UFO had a slight lead and held on for
second with WILD WILD WEST third in one of the
best races of the day.
This race was followed by the Boatbuilder’s
Exhibition Class, which was won by MISTY, followed
over by FIRST TEAM and WIDE OPEN.
Like the Moosabec races, Stonington separates out
the working and recreational lobster boats for the title of
the Fastest Working Lobster Boat, known as the Jimmy
Stevens Cup. On the line were four boats BLUE EYED
GIRL, GRAMP’S BIRD, LISA MARIE and UNCLE’S
UFO. The given was UNCLE’S UFO being first over
the line, but the battle would be for second and third. As
they came up the course LISA MARIE had second with
BLUE EYED GIRL and GRAMP’S BIRD in a heated
battle for third, which was won by BLUE EYED GIRL.
Now came the final race of the day, Stonington’s
Fastest Lobstah Boat Afloat. LITTLE GIRLS,
UNCLE’S UFO, WTF, and WILD WILD WEST
were all very close in speed. Had everybody showed
everything they had? As they came up the course
LITTLE GIRLS had the lead on the Stonington side of
the course with WTF right on her transom and gaining.
At midway it was still LITTLE GIRLS but WTF was
back just half a boat length. When they neared the finish
line WTF slipped into the lead in the closest race of the
day. Now who was going to get third, at the midway
point it was WILD WILD WEST over UNCLE’S UFO
and it remained that way at the finish.
Photographs were posted on Facebook accompanied
with comments and everyone said that it was a great
In the first heat of Diesel Class J DEAR ABBIE got by JANICE
ELAINE, but the role was reversed in the finals.
The big winner in Diesel Class J was Carl Gross’ HEY BABY from
Vinalhaven. She is a Northern Bay 36 powered with a 610-hp Volvo.

day of racing. The last big winner, was Derrick Beal
of Jonesport, owner of MISS BADONKADONK, who
won Carolina Skiff.
Now where was the next race going to be held?
Questions were starting to surface about the Harpswell
Races saying that they were canceled. One problem
noted was that they had not sent in their event permit
to the U. S. Coast Guard. I contacted the Coast Guard
and getting the permit could be done and then I called
Albert Rose, the organizer of the Harpswell Races, to
see where he stood. He said that he had already talked
with the Coast Guard and had filed a permit for 2015.
He said that his problem was not the permit, but all
those that volunteered to help, but did not.
Over the year we have lost three points races,
Friendship and Searsport and now Harpswell. When
Harpswell canceled it created a problem for a number
of racers who were counting on this event for points.
The Executive Committee noted the problem and asked
the race organizers of Long Island if they would like to
be a points race. They were more than pleased and this
will make the last race weekend of the racing season
even more important.
So the next race will be Winter Harbor on 9 August
and this could rival Stonington for numbers as they
are celebrating their 50th anniversary. There are always
great prizes and rumours are another pick-up truck
might be given away.
