RECLINER COMMITTEE DEVELOPS VOLUNTARY GUIDELINES
The Inter-Industry Recliner Committee has reached agreement on Voluntary Recliner Chair
Guidelines t o improve the safety performance of these products.
The wording of the Guidelines, along with a schematic which portrays how t o implement
the guidelines, is shown below:
Recliner chairs shall be so constructed as t o allow no more than
five inches opening between the upholstered seat rail and the
upholstered leg rest in the area bounded by the parallel linkage
of the extended leg rest. This may be accomplished by the use
of rigid cross members or any other practical method, or in
the alternative, the leg rest shall be so constructed that it will
disengage when an obstruction is encountered as the leg rest is
closed.

The following caution will accompany all recliner chairs:
C A U T I O N
Do not allow children t o play on this mechanized furniture or
operate the mechanism. Legrest folds down on closing so that
a child could possibly be injured. Always leave in an upright
and closed position. Keep hands anu feet clear of mechanism.
Only the occupant should operate it.
Mechanism manufacturers are in the process of redesigning their mechanisms t o assist chair
manufacturers to meet these voluntary guidelines on new construction by January 1, 1987.
