A NEW PASSOVER MACHZOR: A “LIBERATING” EXPERIENCE
By Rabbi Robert S. Pilavin
ost Jews know the “Machzor” as the special prayer
book for the High Holidays. Fewer are aware that
the same term can refer to the special prayer book for the
other major holidays – Sukkot, Pesach and Shavu’ot.
2013 saw the publication of the “Koren Pesah
Mahzor.” This new edition contains the clear typeset of
Koren publishers with a stunning translation and
commentary by former Great
Britain Chief Rabbi Jonathan
Sacks.
The Machzor contains all
of the special prayers associated
with the week of Passover – from
the day before (Erev Pesah), the
evening and morning services of
each of the eight days, and the
Talmudic volume dealing with
the laws of Passover.
An outstanding aspect of
the Machzor is a 104-page
introduction by Rabbi Sacks in
which he explores numerous
Pesach themes. To his mind, this
festival “emerged, in four ways,
as the central event around which
most of Judaism turns” (xv).
Thus,
1) “Genesis...is a series of
anticipations of the exodus, focusing our attention on,
and heightening our anticipation of, what would
eventually take place in the days of Moses.”
2) “Remembering that you were once slaves in Egypt is
the...most frequently invoked ‘reason for the
commands’ [and]..forms an essential part of the logic of
Jewish law.”
M
3) “Key elements of Jewish law...are best understood as
a protest against and alternative to the Egypt of the
pharaohs even [if] the Torah does not [say so]
explicitly.”
4) “Sustained meditation on the contrast between Egypt
and the society the Israelites were called on to create
reveals a fundamental choice that civilizations must
make, then, now and perhaps for all
time...the issues [Pesach] raises [are]
slavery, freedom, politics, power, state,
society,
human
dignity
and
responsibility.”
Dr. Sacks then elaborates on
these themes at length (xvii-xxvi) and
notes the insight of Heinrich Heine:
“Since the exodus, freedom has spoken
with a Hebrew accent.”
Dr. Sacks also includes 3
stimulating studies on the counting of
the Omer (xlviii-lxxi) and the Song of
Songs –“Faith as Love” (lxxi-lxxxix).
There are provocative essays on
the haftarah of the second day (lxxxixxciii) and the Torah reading of the
seventh day (xciii-xcviii). Particularly
intriguing is “Empathizing with your
enemies: on some [Passover] laws and
customs”(xcviii-civ).
No festival demands as much of us physically,
emotionally and intellectually as Pesach. With Rabbi
Sacks as our Passover companion, we can begin to
appreciate why the effort to “enter” Pesach is ultimately
worthwhile! Maxine joins me in wishing our shul
family a zissen Pesach.

sisterhood news
By Nancy Berger
e began the month of March co-sponsoring an
evening of classic rock and roll with the Men’s
Club. The band, Speed Limit, entertained over 100 of
us with music of our past. Everyone in attendance
seemed to have a great time as we danced the night
away. It was wonderful seeing so many people in the
synagogue on a Saturday evening. Many thanks to
Marla Weinstein and Mindy Fromm for chairing such a
fabulous committee and event.
Also in March, Sisterhood sponsored our
Hiddur Mitzvah Project. Almost 50 participants had a
wonderful time creating their own Gary Rosenthal art
for their seder tables, menorahs for Chanukah,
Tzedakah boxes, mezuzahs, candlesticks, or wedding
picture frames. Gary, himself, was present and shared
information about he got started in this business. Many
participants also purchased merchandise from his trunk
show of new creations, all signed by Gary. Much of
the proceeds will be donated to Kosher Meals on
Wheels. A special thank you goes out to Nancy
Bolotsky for doing such a magnificent job of bringing
this event to our synagogue. A special thank you also
must be given to the Jewish Federation of Greater
Monmouth County, from whom we received an
Adventure Grant to help underwrite part of its cost.
In April, we have two of our most popular
events occurring. Our annual Passover Cooking Class,
led by Barbara Zagha, will be on Wednesday evening,
April 2. During this event we always add additional
recipes to our Passover arsenal. If you haven’t done so
already, please RSVP to the synagogue office to let us
know you will be attending. Sisterhood and nonSisterhood members are welcome to join us, but the
kitchens do get crowded, so let us know of your
interest before space runs out. And save your appetite,
as we will be eating all that we make that evening as
well. On April 30, we will have our next book chat,
Calling Me Home by Julie Kibler.

Sisterhood is selling “Golden Cards.” Instead
of making a trip to the card store or supermarket to
purchase simcha, condolence, or any other type of
card, please consider buying them from us. For $5, we
will stamp and send it, and a donation will be made to
Sisterhood. Please check out what this beautiful card
looks like elsewhere in this issue of the VOICE.
Purchasing a card is easy – just call Rochelle Epstein at
732-251-7858 or email her at [email protected].
We are also selling SCRIP, which can be
purchased for such stores as Staples, Sears, Payless
Shoes, and Home Goods, to name only a few. By
purchasing through Sisterhood, it will not cost you
anything more, and Sisterhood gets a percentage of the
sales. Further information is included elsewhere in the
VOICE. Please contact Vickie Amron at 732-9875988 to order.
Our Sisterhood Showcase continues to offer
great items. This is a great opportunity to purchase taxfree quality items while supporting the Sisterhood,
which ultimately supports Congregation Sons of Israel.
Have you noticed our beautiful Woman of
Valor Wall, just inside the main lobby? If your special
woman is not already included on our wall, please
consider having her name added to the list of these very
special women. Your donation of $150 helps
Sisterhood provide needed services for our synagogue.
Please encourage your moms, daughters,
nieces, aunts, and female friends who live in the area to
support our Sisterhood. Feel free to call me at 732446-9488 to offer your thoughts, suggestions, or your
time. In the next few weeks, we will also be looking
for women who are interested in being a member of our
Board for the coming year. We would love to have
more women become active, so please let me know
that you are interested in having a more involved role.
People-power is needed. Remember, together we can
make a difference!

ADULT EDUCATION NOTES
Our weekday morning Torah classes at Levy’s will meet each Wednesday (10 AM) on April 2, 9 and 30. We
will not meet during Pesach or the day immediately after Pesach.
RITUAL NOTES
On the night of April 15, we begin the seven weeks of “counting the Omer.” For more information on this mitzvah and
the period of semi-mourning associated with it, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counting_of_the_Omer.
The special service schedule for Passover appears in the Voice on page 13.
We have ordered multiple copies of the OU Passover Guide. Call the synagogue office for more details. A “link” to a
guide to preparing for Pesach appears on our website. A form authorizing the rabbi to sell our “chametz” appears
elsewhere in the Voice. Don’t forget a donation to the Rabbi’s Fund. This fund enables the rabbi to offer discrete but
tangible assistance to many worthy individuals and causes.
YOM HA-SHOAH
Holocaust Remembrance Day is marked on 28 Nisan (Sunday -Monday April 27-28). Watch your email for details of
our upcoming Yom Ha-Shoah program.

SUPPLEMENTAL WINE LIST
The wines listed below, though not available for tasting, are recommended for purchase. All
the wines are outstanding and most are premium priced. All are highly rated by well known
wine critics. The list is incomplete as they represent a tiny portion of the ever expanding
Kosher wine industry. Kosher wines are consistently winning top awards at international wine
competitions and are being produced in every major wine region in the world. The wines listed
below are not mevushal and should be handled accordingly.

The Kosher wine world has proliferated over the last two decades, thus making it
impossible to provide a complete list for selection. Indeed, new wines, particularly
from Israel and from Italy, France and the United States are appearing on the scene.
More importantly, they are making it into the mainstream of wine consumption.
Among the more recent Israeli entrants to look for are Alexander, Psagot, Montefiore,
Flam, Tanya, Or Haganuz.
