About Opus 2014

International Summer Academy for Contemporary Music
13th to 23rd August 2013 in Salem Castle, Baden-Württemberg / Germany
Opus XXI is a Summer Academy for contemporary music which takes place in Salem
Castle, a former Cistercian monastery in the beautiful landscape of Lake Constance,
Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
Since 2001 the Summer Academy Opus XXI provides an open space for young
qualified postgraduate students to get exposed to contemporary music, ensemble
repertoire and fundamentals of improvisation.
A group of 20 postgraduate composers and instrumentalists are intensely working
together with a distinguished «composer in residence» and an experienced
«ensemble for New Music». The daily workshops for instrumentalists such as
rehearsing of new pieces, improvisation and for composers such as performing and
conducting their own pieces with the «ensemble for New Music», are complemented
by lectures in analysis, career training, cross over and a composition master-class.
Opus XXI provides the opportunity for international instrumentalists and composer to
experience the contemporary music in a truly personal and inspiring atmosphere that
facilitates experimentation, improvisation and the encounter with different aesthetics.
The workshop results are presented in a final concert at “Bregenzer Festspiele” in
Bregenz, Austria and at “Salem Castle”, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
Opus XXI is partner in the ULYSSES network project that supports and promotes
young European artists to encourage their mobility by providing them with the
opportunity of practicing their passion in the best European venues dedicated to new
music.
