Yugadi to the Kannadigas ,Navreh to the Kashmiri’s and Baisakhi to the Punjabi’s.
New Year in any language , is the first day of the rest of the year, and heralds new beginnings. On my personal
behalf as well as on behalf of the MANAGING COMMITTEE, I wish all of you an auspicious beginning to this year.
Most students must be over with the exam tension, so must be the parents, I wish them all the best for the coming
academic year.
Here at Waltair Club, keeping with the exam fever all around, activity was limited to a couple of events. “Holi” a
festival that always comes during the exam time, but kids and their parents have never let that be a hurdle inreveling in
the festival of colours and enjoying playing “Holi” with friends and family. The Holi celebrations in the Club were enjoyed
by everyone who have put aside their studies and financial year ending issues. Arrangements were well made.
The Ugadi eve program showcased all the traditional aspects of Andhra culture and was an immensely enjoyable
evening for the entire family. Great effort by the Entertainment committee.
The Ladies Committee is organising a cookery contest at our club, and it will be a competition worth watching as
it is open to men, women, and children members of the Club
An upgrade to the services being offered at the Club is the introduction of palm held tablets for stewards to take
orders. This system will improve efficiency in order taking as well as reduction in the service time. Parking areas
in the Club have been re-organized to streamline flow of traffic within the club premises.
Inspired by the “Arrive Alive” campaign by the Police Department, we now have the option of availing the service
of a driver (on payment) to be dropped off home. Club members are advised to make use of the facility especially
after late night parties.
The Club office has undergone a drastic upgrade too. With more space and better ventilation, the work environment
has improved. The Committee members have more space to perform their duties with a dedicated space for meetings
which can be used by all the sub Committees too for their meetings without having to use either the Club lounge
or the banquet areas. With couple of months left in this Club year ,I look forward to all our regular programs like
the weekly movie, Tambola and other events.
Until next month.
Best regards
- A.T. RAYUDU

Mr Mohan Jauhar and Mrs Anitha Jauhar are a very popular and well known
couple. Mr Jauhar has the credit of building the first five star hotel in South
India-the SUN and Sea which is now the PARK and has been in the citys
limelight since 1960.As a couple they fell in love with the city and built a
home which is a landmark by itself on the beach and I feel that the house
is a reflection of their personalities. Its airy, roomy, open, classic and very
well maintained.
Waltair Times is very proud to feature one of Waltair clubs most well known and
distinguished couples Mr. & Mrs. Jauhar
1.
When did you become a member and how was the introduction of a new member then ?
Mr Jauhar - I came to Visakhaptnam on 1.8.1960 and became a member of the Club in August 1960 itself. Balloting
was very strict those days and the Club was very strict about the membership. The introduction was also very strict
and the screening was also very high and black balling was used to reject potential members who did not fit the
bill but I was welcomed with open arms and I am glad I joined the Club.
2.
What were your earliest memories of the club ?
Mr Jauhar - My earliest memories were very pleasant. Christmas and New Year were fun but the dress code was
strict. Everyone had to wear a bow tie and black dinner jacket and even a lounge suit was not allowed.
Mrs Anita - The whole club was like a small family and everyone knew everyone else. There were a large number
of foreigners and a few Indian members but the overall memories of that time were very very pleasant.
3.
What were the facilities available then and what activities did you participate the most in - ?
Mr Jauhar - We were an integral part of every activity in the club. The bar was small but the barman Ibrahim was
excellent. He knew everyones favorite drink and used to make amazing cocktails too.He would see the member and
get his favorite drink.
Mrs Anita- all the bearers spoke excellent English and were great cooks too particularly the bearer Yellaya. I can still
recall the lovely taste of the cheese batter fried fish, soufflés and the Christmas puddings.
The paid secretary Mr Shipton was also quite efficient
I still recall that children below 16 were not allowed into the Club after 5pm
The ladies had lots of MAHJONG competitions which were very popular.
4.
How were the Christmas and New Year parties - ?
Mr Jauhar - The parties were great fun and the club used to be brilliantly decorated. There was lots of ball room dancing
and everyone was on the floor for the duration of the party.
Mrs Anita- the parties were small but great fun and the food was excellent .Lots of bakes , roasts and of course
the plum pudding.. Turkey cooked in brandy sauce was a highlight
5.
Both your daughters Rina and Payal are members of our club what was your fondest memories of the club with your
children. ?
Mrs Anita –They were there everywhere and still love the club chambers coffee which they drink virtually every day
they are here. The children also had loads of activities like birthday parties ,fashion shows etc. They had a wonderful
group of friends who all grew up in the club and many romances also blossomed in that period when they grew up.
6.
What are the changes that you have seen in the club over the years./ How do you rate the facilities now :
Mr Jauhar - the expansion of the club buildings is very impressive .The swimming pool which was built during the
Presidentship of Mr R K Saraf is another great addition .The food courts ,gym and shuttle courts are very good
Mrs Anita - the club building is very very impressive and very regal now and every one who sees it is very impressed
7.
As a couple that frequently travel out of Vizag, how do you rate the facilities in our club vis a vis the other clubs.
Mr and Mrs Jauhar - The club facilities are on par with the best clubs in India and abroad. The chambers are as
good as any other clubs chambers even in the metros. The wedding hall is a great asset and the library is fantastic
Even the open air movie is wonderful This club is second to none in this country in terms of facilities.
8.
What would be your advise to the newer/younger members of the club- ?
Mr Jauhar - I request all the members to use the club for recreation, family get togethers and not for business. They
should also ensure that a club annex is established so that the future expansion of the club is ensured.
Mrs Anita- The quality of the food should be improved with better quality food outlets and specialist cooks. More members
should use the club and its excellent facilities with their families.
Members should enjoy the wonderful programmes being arranged by Ladies Committee in particular and the entertainment
committee also.
