BEYOND THE BIKINI
The season’s hottest swimwear trends go well beyond the classic string bikini.
By AIMEE BLANCHETTE • [email protected]
Now that we are safely into warm-weather territory, it’s time to make a statement poolside.
Clothing designers are finally proving that swimwear can be fashionable. From sporty to scubainspired, this is the year to step out of your sartorial swimsuit comfort zone and try something new.
Leave your bikini buying to the last minute? Good news. There are still plenty of stylish options
at local shops. Here are a few of our favorite looks.

Go retro with a high-waisted bikini. This silhouette, which draws attention to the smallest
part of your waist, is surprisingly flattering.
HIGH NECKS
It may not be your typical beach look, but high
necks are hot this summer. It’s a glamorous
way to stay covered up, but still chic. Sheer cutouts add a wow factor.
SPORTY SASS
Fashion designers are looking to athletic brands
for inspiration. Zippers, mesh inserts or cutouts,
neoprene material, rash-guards and bold colors
help channel your athletic side.
CLASSY CUTOUTS
If you’re partial to a one-piece swimsuit but still
want to show some skin, try one with cutouts
or sheer details. A one-piece with a non-traditional cut, like the one above left, is a great way
to flaunt your body without baring all.
PRETTY PRINTS
Swimsuits with floral patterns and graphic
designs never go out of style. The eye-catching
stripes, cutouts and patterns look great on
one-piece suits and bikinis. Is print the new
solid?

Mesh tops and silk shorts work just as well off the
beach. Stash a pair of strappy sandals or heels in
your tote for a seamless day-to-night transition.

What are you wearing? Dress from
Proper and Prim on Lyndale Av. in
Minneapolis, Jeffrey Campbell shoes,
and my belt is from a thrift store.
Describe your style: I like to mix
timeless classics with bright colors
to give them an edgy twist. And I
always dress for comfort, because
when you’re comfortable you’re
more confident, and when you’re
confident everything looks better.
Favorite LynLake spot: The VFW,
now that Country Bar is gone.
Favorite boutique: I’m a sucker for
thrift stores, and Anthropologie. My
favorite boutique though, would
have to be the new Proper and Prim.
