EBHCC [NEWSBREAKERS] 1st XI Seek that Ruthless Edge Captain Damian Yze has some bad news for the rest of the BHRDCA; East Box Hill will be
approaching the rest of the season with same Ruthless attitude it has been known for in
previous years.
After battling a back injury for most of the start of the season, East Box Hill’s First XI captain, wants to instill that ruthless
winning culture, which has been surely lacking for the past two years.
“What I want to bring to the table, is that never say die attitude to the team, because everyone hates losing, we have the team that
can still make finals and that is our goal for the remainder of the season” Yze explained at the last match reports for 2013.
East Box Hill has played some really good cricket, but just hasn’t been able to land that killer blow. The team has dominated in
sessions, however haven't done enough to get over the line.
At a similar position the same time last season, East Box Hill is in a better position to finish strongly and upset the stability of the
McIntosh Shield.
Vice Captain Angus Gauld is confident that the team is on the right track, “There are a lot of good young cricketers coming
through and as a club we need to teach them to not accept mediocrity and give it their all”.
The best Team philosophy that the first eleven could adopt is current Australian coach Darren Lehmann viewpoint; the best kind
of confidence should come from the team doing well. "If you look at winning at all costs, the individual performances will take
care of themselves, Personally and as a team, it is to back ourselves a lot. Don't doubt anything and play aggressively because
we've got the talent in the shed”. Darren Lehmann stated at the start of the Australian ashes summer.
In matches such as the win at Blackburn, is the best way to create confidence and build a winning culture and that is the best way
forward.
The signs are promising, as this season alone has seen six players debut for the 1st XI, In particular James Roche, being able to
cement his spot with some strong and consistent performances.
However it has been the more experienced First eleven cricketers, Atilla Yaman and Brent Henricus who have been driving the
team this season, both are in arguably career best form with the Bat.
Yaman thumping a massive score of 152 against Blackburn in the final round before Christmas and Brent Henricus scoring two
centuries, both with an average over 60.00.
On the bowling side, Chris Borg and Campbell Gauld although battling some niggling injuries, are almost at 100%, bowling
plenty of overs and increase the workload needed to gain the advantage in games. Both players agree that working hard together
as a team is the best way to build to another successful era.
Captain Yze wants to build another strong Ebhcc era.

[NEWSBREAKERS] EBHCC BUILDING THE FOUNDATIONS “Spoon” better known as Brendan Scott arrived at East Box Hill wanting to make an impact off-‐field, and help build the foundations for the future of the club he now calls th
rd
home. In his 4 year in the Junior Program and 3 year as Junior Manager, President Cam White caught up with him recently.
CW: You have now been involved in the Junior Program for Four years, how
did this relationship with the club come about?
I have been at the club now for five years and I arrived at the Club while
Coaching Junior Cricket and playing at Burwood Uniting Canterbury,
unfortunately it wasn’t the greatest experience, so some mates, who were
playing at East Box Hill, introduced me to then President Andrew Gill.
As soon as I started at the Club, I volunteered my time to help Dave Law and
Dave McIldowney with the Junior Program. The rest is History.
CW: What is your coaching Philosophy?
I often joke that my coaching philosophy is “Do as I say and not as I do” because I can admit that I am not the best
cricketer at the club, however even with the lack of playing time, I can back up with knowledge and experience as a
coach.
When Coaching I have three principle rules, Development, Teamwork and Fun.
All three rules tie into one another, because a junior cricketer will not retain information and wont develop if they are
not enjoying the game. That is why if you base the development around key team values, you will have a balance of
all three.
The style I coach, allow the players to share in the decision-making process. Guiding the players with decisions and
having an approachable attitude, which lets the players have input. This in turn teaches leadership skills and pushes
the message of discipline to work harder to achieve the goals set by the team and will show more respect and be more
willing to listen if they know that I am genuinely interested in their opinions.
I also bring a style that requires some skill and balance to promote discipline amongst the team as by not all players
see the team perspective, but have their own individual perspective. Adaptability is a key to a good coach.
CW: You have often played in the lower grades while developing juniors, is that a choice?
Partly it has been my choice as my focus for the past few years has been on the development of the younger
generation at the club.
Many legends of the club have questioned me for not focusing on myself as my game has suffered imensly but I
believed that if I can help instill the club values and progress young cricketers games at a senior level, East Box Hill
will have sustained success for many years to come.
It has been a bonus that I had the pleasure to play with almost every junior cricketer that has been promoted for his
senior debut.
CW: Your biggest achievement/memory at the club so far?
Personally I don’t look at individual success, rather then team success. I would have to say my biggest achievement
thus far is helping to promote and push so many junior cricketers up the grades.
The fact that I was able to captain Jack Roughsedge and Jag Sadhu’s first senior games and now they are both playing
at a higher level, and can also share two of my highest batting partnerships in senior cricket with them.
On a Junior Program note it is hard to pinpoint specific memories, as there are so many.
Every time one of the young boys achieve a milestone, it makes me proud to be there to witness and be a part of it.
EBHCC [NEWSBREAKERS] CW: Who has had the biggest influence on you at the club thus far?
I credit three guys who have given me the most support influence and the way I conduct this role, Andrew Gill,
Paul “Tagger” Byrne and of course you as well Cam.
Andrew Gill shows more passion for East Box Hill then anyone else I have seen at the club, he pushes me to
work hard off the field because he loves the club so much, I also credit Gilly for helping me enjoy my own
cricket again.
You as President and Paul Byrne as Vice President have given me massive guidance and helping me build the
Junior Program in my vision. All three of these guys will be life-long mates.
CW: A young player to watch at the club?
It is hard to pinpoint just one player as we have a fantastic group of young players coming through
and we need to work hard to make sure they're able to come in and play at the highest level.
The Club is blessed to have a fantastic talent pool that is making its way in seniors, Names such as
Jack Roughsedge, Kirath Gill, Vasish Vasan, Sam Kidd and Nick McDonald.
However if I were to pick two young guys that I have seen grow into outstanding young cricketers
and have played a bit of senior cricket with, it would be Jag Sandhu and Paul Collopy. There is so
much talent at this club and it will be great to see this group build a dynasty in years to come.
CW: What has been achieved and what are the plans for the future?
When I first started as Junior Manager, I envisaged a five-year plan that the club must stick by if it is
to grow to a level similar to Blackburn Cricket Club, however without the link of a football club, the
plan has had its ups and downs.
The numbers have slowly dwindled due to outside interest such as basketball and soccer nevertheless
the relationship with St Francis Xavier Primary is blossoming and Milo In2Cricket is in its 2nd year at
the club. It would be great to have an Under10s (ankle bitters) in the next 2 years.
One of the biggest challenges I have found is to gain the support from the aging senior list, the culture
at the club in the past has been the Junior Program is “the Babysitting service” but with no support we
wont have juniors in the future, with the work I and doing I am proud that this culture is finally
changing.
CW: How would you like to be remembered, when you eventually retire?
I would like to be remembered in two ways, first as a loyal clubman, and secondly, even if I had only
a small impact on the young cricketers at the club, I hoped to be remembered as someone that was
willing to go the full mile willing to help anyone no matter what the circumstance.

[NEWSBREAKERS] EBHCC Homewood Bound Jasvinder Mudher or “Bobby” as he is affectionately known, has
notched up many games over his illustrious career, playing with many
clubs around the BHRDCA and in the Outer West.
At the age of nine Bobby was introduced to Cricket and he has never
looked back, he often describes Cricket as one of his greatest passions
in life, and would not turn down anyone who needed help or just
wanted to talk about cricket, and its experiences.
Following a game, you would often here Jasvinder reminisce about his
experiences in cricket, whether he was playing against Shane Warne as
a Schoolboy for Yarra Valley Grammar or facing up to Dirk Nannas
while playing in the BHRDCA.
According to Jasvinder he has had many influences on his career
including the self-dubbed “Channel nine commentary team with
members Ray Willis, George Gislingham, Dave Sutton, Tom Cullen
and Darren Croft. However his greatest influence is his father who
guided him in the earliest of his career.
It wasn’t until he arrived at East Box Hill, where he really felt at home.
Having made friends with Marty Fincher, Grant Sargent and Andrew Gill in his playing days, it was
an enticing factor in coaching the Club when approached by then President Andrew Gill.
Under Coach “Bobby”, the club strong performances on the field, although off the field had its bumps
in the road. The sudden passing of club great Howard Wilson was the biggest hurdle off the field, this
event brought the club together and Bobby would be the first to tell you, the bond that was formed
throughout the club under his tenure as coach led to a successful period in the clubs history, and a rare
win in the BHRDCA, Shield flags in First XI and Second XI in the same season.
Bobby describes that as coach the bond he made with all members of the club young and old are life
long. The advice that he would often give to a young cricketer is to listen and watch good cricketers.
Whether it is on TV, training or in a game.
He explains that you have to work out for yourself what suits you, Know your own game. Enjoy
fielding because you are going to have do it a lot as well as to be the best team man you can be unselfish acts like scoring, umpiring, drinks and helping with throw downs etc.
If you were to ask Jasvinder what his greatest achievement is in his long career, he would simply tell
you; trying to give back to cricket what it gave him.
Cricket gave him life long fun and enjoyment. Great friendships. Laughter. Premierships.

[NEWSBREAKERS] EBHCC History of East Box Hill Cricket Club
With Club Historian Colin McGary 1966 TO 1975 Leading to Change
Following the 1965 season, the 1966 Annual General Meeting marked the year
Howard Wilson was elected to the position of Club Secretary, a role he was to
perform for the next 20 years.
Howard became one of the most important and influential members of the
entire Association. He holds many batting records at East Box Hill. The minutes of
a Committee meeting conducted 15/1/65 read: " The enthusiasm and initiative of Howard Wilson was
pointed out to members of Committee". These words are still accurate today.
On the field the 2nd XI won its first premiership in 1966/67 reversing a trend by beating East
Burwood at the Box Hill H.S. oval (today’s Howard Wilson Oval) after trailing by 14 runs on the first
innings. This match was characterised by a long and tedious innings by the Association auditor Ron
Woollard in East Burwood's 2nd innings. Woollard carried his bat for 30 not out, having batted for
over 45, eight ball overs, failing to save the match for his team. Victory was claimed by the 2nds by 7
wickets just on stumps after scoring at 7 run an over.
A special general meeting to adopt a Club Constitution was held on 21/9/67. The constitution
formulated by Lou Rodriquez, Bob Deuchar and Howard Wilson was adopted and remained in force
until the club was incorporated in September 1986. Club stalwart and long serving President
Rodriquez was also the driving force behind incorporation together with current Club Secretary Colin
McGary.
RHL Sparks Reserve on the corner of Middleborough and Albion Roads became the clubs
headquarters in 1967. For several years prior to this the club was temporarily based at the Mont Albert
Primary School as the original ground was taken over for an athletic track.
The pavilion for the first two years at this base consisted of a tin shed (the first 'pavilion' of the club')
whilst a permanent pavilion was funded and built by Council. The club had a long and happy
association at Sparks Reserve spanning more than 20 years, notwithstanding the fact that the ground
surface was never what you would call carpet-like.
A change of name consistent with the new base was raised at a committee meeting in November 1969
and at the AGM members voted to adopt the name Laburnum Cricket Club. At that Annual Meeting
the club's first Life Members were elected unanimously, Foundation members Ken Buckthorpe, Ian
Duncan and Ron Baker.
Three months after the AGM the Box Hill City Council objected strongly to the use of a name
synonymous with an area in another municipality albeit over the road from the clubs ground.
The Committee discussed a further name change, submitting a short list for approval by the Council.
In July 1971 it was decided to submit to the AGM the names council had approved. Then in August
EBHCC [NEWSBREAKERS] less than twelve months after the previous change members approved the change to East Box Hill
Cricket Club.
The 1971-72 season saw the first junior team (Under 16) for East Box Hill take the field. The first
junior coach of the club was the then opening bowler for the first XI Alan Charles. Three of the
original Under 16s - Colin and Trevor McGary and John Cutler - have played over 1000 club games
between them since. An Honour Board was also commenced detailing all averages and club
championship winners since the clubs inception.
The 1972 AGM saw John (Jack) Gibson unanimously installed as Life Member. Jack's record of on
field performance with over 1000 wickets taken, likely to remain, unsurpassed in Club history. Jack
frequently passed a total of 50 wickets a season during his career with the club. An Under 14 side
took the field for the first time in 1972-73.
At the AGM in 1973 the members sanctioned further expansion and 3 senior teams were nominated
for the first time together with an Under 12 team. Several grounds were investigated in the lead up to
the season including the old Mirrabooka Primary School, St Paschals and Killora Primary School.
By the 19/9/73 use of Mirrabooka had been secured for the Under 12 and D2 Grade teams.
This committee meeting also accepted the resignation of Les Stephenson from active on or off the
field participation with the club. A crafty and often fiery left arm fast bowler and club captain for
some years this was a considerable loss to the club.
Fortunately he was able to resume in the 1974 season being again 1st XI captain and team manager.
Lou Rodriquez and Howard Wilson were elected Life Members at the 1974 AGM, at this meeting it
was also proposed to appoint a coach but no action was taken on this issue until the 1976-77 season
when Bob Raymond was appointed at $30 per game. Raymond started with the club the year before
the second XI was formed before progressing to Sub District ranks.
By 1975 the club had been fortunate to obtain use of St Paschals Monastery ground on a shared basis
for use by their lowest senior team. Apart from sharing a couple of times since the club was able to
have virtually exclusive use of this excellent facility until 1995.
