Loss of the night – and an engineered future
During the past 15 years, "artificial light at night” (ALAN) has become a major research
domain, bridging various disciplines – from astronomy to zoology to engineering. At
the same time, it is only one example of a novel stressor, creating novel biotic
communities, and asking for new conservation and management strategies. Indeed, we
are still at the beginning of a global, fundamental and irreversible transformation of
our hydro-, geo-, atmo- and biosphere; without understanding the long-term
consequences of this transformation for both humans and nature.
