“Galaxy structure as a tracer of accretion and interaction
history”
The morphology of galaxies is closely related to both their star-formation
anddynamical histories. I will describe a collection of studies which use novel
measurements of internal structure to infer the long- and short-timescale evolutionary
processes affecting different types of galaxies. These measurements include spiral arm
properties derived from Galaxy Zoo visual inspection of SDSS images, and MegaMorph
multi-wavelength profile fits to both survey imaging and integral-field spectroscopic
data. I will discuss the role of interactions and star-formation in determining spiral
structure, present clear signatures of the contrasting inside-out formation of disks and
spheroids, and highlight the outside-in nature of galaxy quenching.
