Social Interaction: the Interplay of Pre-reflective and Reflective Processes
Initiative: European Platform
Bewilligung: 27.06.2011
Laufzeit: 2 Jahre
Projekt-Website: www.social-interaction.eu
The overall aim of the project is to transcend the dichotomy between Theory of Mind and
Interaction Theory accounts of social interaction in order to arrive at an integrated framework of
social behaviour that can be tested empirically. The project is based on the assumption that Theory
of Mind and Interaction Theory accounts are complementary rather than mutually exclusive as
their relationship is often portrayed in the literature. After developing a theoretical framework, two
theoretical aspects will be tested experimentally: (1) Reflective vs. pre-reflective processes in
social interaction and (2) cooperative vs. competitive forms of social interaction. Pilot studies will
be conducted with rats and with humans. The experimental design of these two pilot studies is
based on a prior developed theoretical framework wich will be redesigned and improved on the
basis of the outcomes of the experiments.
