Doberman Pinscher

Doberman Pinscher
Doberman Pinscher
This medium-sized German working breed is
named for Louis Dobermann, its creator. A
skilled breeder, he developed the Doberman by
crossbreeding several breeds. Although those
used will never be positively known, the German
Pinscher, Rottweiler, Manchester Terrier and the
Greyhound have been suggested. Perfected late
in the 19th century, the breed was accepted for
registration by the German Kennel Club in 1900 and
first imported to this continent in 1908. The Dobe
has become internationally renowned as a security
dog, does extremely well in obedience work and
makes a loyal family pet. Ideal height for males is
27-1/2 inches (70 cm) at the shoulder. The clean
profile is enhanced by a gleaming, close-fitting,
short coat in black, red, blue or fawn, all with rust
markings. Minimum grooming is required. Highset ears are usually cropped to a point but may be
left natural. The breed does need regular exercise
to maintain their sleek good looks, and adapts well
to either city or country living.
