Design and Control of a Three-Phase
Dual-Active Bridge Converter for Battery
Energy Storage Systems in DC
Distribution Grids
In this thesis project, a three-phase dual-active bridge (DAB3) converter prototype
shall be designed for integrating battery energy storage systems into a 380 V dc
distribution grid. For charging and discharging the batteries with high efficiency,
modulation schemes e.g. asymmetrical duty-cycle control shall be used to realize
soft-switching for a wide voltage range. A battery management system shall be also
designed to optimize the performance.
The main tasks are summarized as follows:
1. Simulate the DAB3 converter in PLECS and investigate the modulation
schemes for soft-switching range extension
2. Design a battery management system and other control functions e.g. voltage
droop control
3. Design and assembly of a 2 kW DAB3 prototype including PCB and
transformer
4. Control implementation and experimental tests
