The GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies / Leibniz-Institut für Globale und Regionale Studien is an independent social-science research institute based in Hamburg. It analyses political, social and economic developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, and links this knowledge to questions of global significance. It combines regionspecific analysis with innovative comparative research on accountability and participation, growth and development, peace and security, and power and ideas. The GIGA seeks to appoint a Research Fellow to conduct comparative research on Political Islam in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and/or the Middle East. Applications are invited for a full-time position starting 1 January 2017, with an initial contract of three years and an option for additional three years, subject to a successful review. The salary is commensurate with TV-AVH / TVöD EG 13. The successful candidate will - expand the GIGA’s expertise on Political Islam by researching one or more of the following topics: o Objectives of Islamist movements in one or more of the above-mentioned world regions o Transregional networks in Political Islam o Individual and/or social causes of Islamic radicalisation and its repercussions o Dissemination strategies of Islamist ideas and messages (e.g., use of social media) - be an active member of the GIGA and part of one Regional Institute and at least one Research Programme - pursue a targeted publication strategy, acquire third-party funding, and conduct researchbased knowledge transfer Your qualifications: - Outstanding doctorate in social sciences or humanities - Excellent academic record in relevant fields demonstrated by publications in renowned peerreviewed journals and/or leading publishing houses - Excellent methodological skills (quantitative and/or qualitative), experience in interdisciplinary and comparative work as well as sound theoretical grounding - Successful record in third-party funding acquisition is an asset - English-language proficiency; additional language skills relevant to research regions are an asset Part-time options will be considered, if so desired by the successful candidate.
