À Nieuport, l’art du souvenir peut se prendre à la lettre. Aujourd’hui, l’art occupe une place importante à Nieuport, ce qui était déjà
le cas en 1916, bien qu’en cachette. À l’époque, un groupe de peintres de l’armée belge se réfugiait dans une cave à Nieuport.
Pas pour pourvoir les canons de couleurs de camouflage, mais pour illustrer les conséquences de la guerre. On y retrouve des
noms connus, tels que Bastien, Huygens, Lynen, Wagemans. Ils ont transposé la vie et la mort au front dans leurs peintures, ainsi
qu’apporté une vitalité et un flair inattendus à et de Nieuport.

Die Kunst des Erinnerns kann man in Nieuwpoort wörtlich nehmen. Heutzutage ist Kunst in dieser Stadt prominent anwesend, aber
bereits 1916 gab es sie schon, obwohl unterirdisch. Damals versteckte sich eine Gruppe bildender Künstler der belgischen Armee
im Luftschutzkeller in Nieuwpoort. Sie wohnten dort nicht, um die Kanonen mit Tarnfarben zu versehen, sondern, um die Folgen
des Kriegs zu malen.
