One Month: After the materialization of the art object from 8 to 31 July, 2016

Lucy R. Lippard beginnt ihre Konzeptkunst-Anthologie „Six Years: The dematerialization of the art object from 1966
to 1972“ mit einem Beitrag von George Brecht. Brecht (New York 1926 – 2008 Köln) publizierte sein schmales Heft
mit dem Titel „Chance-Imagery“ über die Rolle von Zufallsprozessen in der Kunst im Jahr 1966; und der Zufall wird
so zum Ausgangspunkt einer Auseinandersetzung mit dem Material bzw. mit dem von Lippard und zuvor El Lissitzky
geprägten Begriff des „Demateriellen“.
Fünfzig Jahre nach Lippards erstem Eintrag kursieren in sozial-, kulturwissenschaftlichen und philosophischen
Kreisen, aber auch unter KuratorInnen und KünstlerInnen Begriffe des ‚new materialism’ und ‚material turn’, die in
die gemeinsame Theoriebildung und das gestalterische künstlerische Vokabular einfließen und erneut ein
Relationsgefüge des Materiellen betonen. Spricht Lippard als Autorin, Kuratorin und Teil einer heterogenen
Kunstszene, die das persönliche Bild einer Entwicklung in der zeitgenössischen Kunst zeichnet, so lädt die Temporary
Gallery aus gegebenem zeitlichen Anlass nun eine zukünftige Generation von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern ein, sich
an den Fragestellungen der aktuellen Theoriedebatte über das Materielle und dessen Einfluss auf die Kunst zu
beteiligen.
Während der Sommerausstellung „One Month: After the materialization of the art object from 8 to 31 July, 2016“
bietet sich die Temporary Gallery einen Monat lang als Plattform und Archiv für künstlerische Arbeiten, Kommentare
und Gedanken, die mehr oder weniger zufällig zusammenfinden, wie „an arbitrary subdivision of what is actually a
whole“ (Brecht). Die Ausstellung ist Ergebnis eines Open Calls an Kunststudenten aus deutschen und internationalen
Akademien und Hochschulen. Das gemeinsame Format der eingereichten Beiträge gibt George Brechts Heft vor.
(13,7 x 21,5 cm).
Lucy R. Lippard begins her anthology of conceptual art “Six Years: The dematerialization of the art object from 1966
to 1972” with a contribution by George Brecht. Brecht (born 1926 in New York, died 2008 in Cologne) published his
small booklet “Chance-Imagery” on the role of chance processes in art in the year 1966; and by doing this chance
literally becomes the starting point for an examination on the material or the notion of the “dematerialized” formed
by Lippard and previously by El Lissitzky.
Fifty years later, concepts of ‘new materialism’ and ‘material turn’ circulate in philosophical and social-cultural
science discourses as well as among curators and artists. They are increasingly becoming a part of a mutual theory
formation and artistic vocabulary, stressing the relational framework of the material. While Lippard speaks as an
author, curator and a part of a heterogeneous art scene, granting her a personal perspective concerning a
development in contemporary art, on the temporal occasion, Temporary Gallery invites a future generation of artists,
to contribute to the questions of the current theoretical debate and its influence on art.
During the summer show “One Month: After the materialization of the art object from 8 to 31 July, 2016“,
Temporary Gallery offers itself for one month as a platform and archive for artistic works, comments, and thoughts,
which find together more or less by chance, like „an arbitrary subdivision of what is actually a whole“ (GB). The
exhibition is the result of an Open Call to art students from German and international academies. The mutual format
of all contributions is provided by George Brecht’s booklet (5.5 x 8.5 inches).
