The Time Of Memory Hello Design The graphic potential of kanji typography is maximised by imagination in Tokyo Performing Arts Festival s 2015 and 2016 posters. Meaning arts that are created and performed by Tokyo citizens , the four characters in the 2015 poster LOGOTYPE 028 / 029 resemble an aerial view of Tokyo streets and alleys, dotted with 11 icons and respective English captions on the variety of performing arts that nourish the city. The same kanji characters in the 2016 poster are transformed into art deco stained glass, with the festival s English name runs in length and breadth amidst a geometric composition. J IGAZO LENS ASSOCIATES INC. Aa Asian Culture Center Theater wishes to boost a sense of community among Gwangju citizens by encouraging them to participate in theatre performances. Staging shows such as 100% Gwangju and Everything By My Side, Community Performativity lets local residents partake in the production, from audition through to actual performances. Adopting a coherent language, stencil types on the posters reflect the project s provisional nature. The layout evolves by programmes, with traces of previous shows accumulating in the background. Aa Titled Burning Down the House, The 10th Gwangju Biennale addresses the process of burning and transformation throughout history and explores the capacity of art to critique social and political issues. With an attempt to put forward the provocative theme, the event s identity features a typographic system inspired by the dynamic nature of fire. The custom Korean type breaks some conventional rules to form a cohesive whole with its English counterparts. Together they occupy maximum layout space to manifest forcefulness of the ideas expressed in the event. SHOWCASE 072 / 073 Aa To exercise the designer s fascination with the correlation between a person s face and name, LENS ASSOCIATES INC. created a collection of faces for the designers of studio OPENENDS using their individual names. Meaning a portrait derived from word, Jigazo, the homonym of self-portrait in Japanese, illustrates not only each model s face but also their characters, comprehensible to even those who cannot read Japanese. The models first names at the bottom of the posters draw a striking contrast against hiragana s graceful curves.
