Yakuza-esque Words/Phrases
◦ 任侠 (ninkyou) = Honor
◦ てめえ (temee) = Vulgar way of saying hello; commonly used between guys
◦ シカと(shikato) = Ignore
Origin: しか(deer) + と (ten; worth 10 points in Hanafuda)
◦ 花札 (hanafuda) = Japanese playing cards
◦ お姉さん (oneesan) = Big Sis (Yakuza way of referring females)
◦ ぼんくら (bonkura) = Idiot
Origin: 盆 = gambling houses
Eventually, it came to also mean "a dark (kurai) person" (盆に暗い)
ぼん(bon) + くら(kura)
Terms used in Hanafuda (花札)
◦ぴかいち (pikaichi) = a hand consisting of
all trash cards except for one high-scoring

Different Hiragana for One Sound
◦ Long ago, there used to be more than one hiragana
character for just one sound.
◦ Eventually, it got too confusing, so the Meiji
Government established to current hiragana for each
sound.
◦ This was the 1900: Elementary School Revision
◦ Those deviating from the standard are now known as
"strange characters" (変体がな = hentai ga na)
