動詞（どうし） Group 1 • Group 1 verbs all end in the “い” sound. い、き、し、ち、に、ひ、み、り。 • To make the plain form, drop “ます” and change the “い” sou into “う”. いいます ー＞ いう いきます ー＞ いく はなします ー＞ はなす もちます ー＞ もつ しにます ー＞ しぬ あそびます ー＞ あそぶ すみます ー＞ すむ はしります ー＞ はしる Group 2 • Group 2 verbs end in the “え” sound or has a single syllable. • To change into plain form, simply drop the “ます” and add a “る” after the verb. おしえます ー＞ おしえる あけます ー＞ あける みせます ー＞ みせる でます ー＞ でる みます ー＞ みる Group 3 (irregular) •Group 3 verbs are the irregular ones that you just have to remember. • します ー＞ する • きます ー＞ くる • おきます ー＞ おきる Plain Form Negative Group 1 • change the “い” sound into the “あ” sound and add “ない” • If the verb ends with “い”, change to “わ” instead of “あ”. いいます ー＞ いわない いきます ー＞ いかない はなします ー＞ はなさない もちます ー＞ もたない しにます ー＞ しなない あそびます ー＞ あそばない すみます ー＞ すまない はしります ー＞ はしらない • “おきます”, in plain negative, becomes group 1. おきます －＞ おかない Group 2 • simply add “ない” in the end. おしえます ー＞ おしえない あけます ー＞ あけない みせます ー＞ みせない でます ー＞ でない みます ー＞ みない Group 3 (irregular) • Just REMEMBER! • します －＞ しない • きます －＞ こない Plain Past & Past Negative • Change into plain negative tense, and just think of the “ない” as being an adjective, and replace the “い” with “かった”. いかない －＞ いかなかった はなさない －＞ はなさなかった あわない －＞ あわなかった 辞書系の用途（ようと） Applications of the Plain Form 動詞ー＞名詞（めいし） • Change a verb into plain form and add “こと” or “の” in the end. 用途 • Have you ever… pattern, do you like… pattern, can you… pattern etc. • Don’t • If • Must • Plan to do By using the Gerund, we can get into a lot of useful patterns. The Gerund is a very convenient grammatical tool; once you learn it, you can speak a lot more Japanese. Just think of how often we use “…ing” in English!
