• Suicide is the leading cause of death among
under 30’s (8 in every 100,000)
• 1 /4 young people living with mental disorder
• Homosexuality issues may be involved in up
to 1/3 of young men under 24 who suicide
• Aboriginal suicide rates are possibly 2 to 3
times that of non-Aboriginal Australians
Understanding Suicide
• Durkheim’s 3 kinds of suicide
– Egoistic (利己の): isolation/lack of integration
– Altruistic (利他的な): over-integration
– Anomic (異例の): at times of rapid social change
• High rate of happiness=high rate of suicide?

• Estimated that half of all young Australians
will be overweight by 2025
(rising at annual rate of 1%)
• In a 2003 survey in Victoria, just 7% of
children had no junk food in their lunch
boxes!
