Summary / Short introduction
C-event provides wireless internet access for events and special purposes. Receiving C-event is possible in many areas at
Charité. After your laptop has picked up the signal, you will automatically be led to a home page where you have to identify
yourself using your user name and password on the ticket provided by the organizer. Internet connection takes place directly
without an intermediary proxy and can be used for all services except network drive connections. In particular, IPsec based
VPN options can be used.
Hardware requirements
You require a laptop with an integrated transmitter or a WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) stick (WIFI, 802.11g). Using
Charité owned computers is not desirable, as these have no virus protection when no proxy server is used.
Configuring Windows
At first you have to connect with the WLAN C-event. The following screen shots using Windows XP show the steps. This varies
with other Windows versions.
Some laptops have a switch on the housing that can be used
to completely switch off the wireless function. As long as the
wireless function is switched on and you are within a C-event
reception area, an information bubble as shown in fig.1 apFig. 1 Wireless reception for C-event
pears on the right at the bottom above the taskbar.
Click on the text or use the mouse cursor to go to the transmitter symbol on the taskbar. By doing so you reach the
systems control window Drahtlose Netzwerkverbindung, fig.2. Should other nets
besides C-event be shown, explicitly choose
C-event and then click on Verbinden (connect). Successful connection to this net
will be confirmed on the right at the top,
fig.3. This connection is now a permanent feature even you are offline or have
switched off the computer.

Pay attention to a sufficient signal
strength! The data transfer rate diminishes
rapidly with distance to the sender and the
type of building you are in. In the outer
areas of the transmission field, connections
may be interrupted. The reception quality
can be checked by moving the mouse cursor to the net symbol after you are connected, fig.4. This will provide you with
information about connection speed and reception quality.
The network parameters (IP-Address, Network mask, Gateway, Nameserver etc.) will
be assigned per DHCP (IP-Adresse automatisch beziehen). At this stage there is normally no further configuration necessary.
Internet access is provided directly. You must not configure any proxy server.

Configuring Mac OS X
Activate Airport to look for available nets by clicking on the Airport symbol, fig.5. As soon as C-event appears in the menu
list, the connection can be activated by clicking on the entry C-event.
The network parameter (IP-Address, Network mask, Gateway, Nameserver etc.) will
be automatically assigned per DHCP. At this stage no further configuration is necessary. You can check the successful connection and the assigned IP Address in
Systemeinstellungen ➙ Netzwerk, fig. 6.

After your laptop has connected to C-event, you have to register with C-event: start your web browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.) and you will automatically be led to the registration page as soon as you call up the first website, fig.7.
Please use the username and password on the ticket that was given to you by the organizer. If the registration is successful,
you will be taken to the chosen sites automatically after a few seconds. This registration is active for as long as you are online. For pauses of more than 15 minutes, you will have to re-register.
