Enaminones are compounds containing the N-C=C-C=O
conjugated system. The enaminone functional group has
diverse reactivity and it has been used extensively as an
intermediate in organic synthesis. Enaminones can be
prepared by the Rh2(OAc)4-catalyzed coupling of thioamides
and diazo compounds. However, this reaction has a limited
substrate scope and it is plagued by side reactions. In this talk,
I will describe the use of Ru(II) and Cu(I) for the synthesis of
enaminones. Both Ru(II) and Cu(I) catalysts used in this study
are more economical than Rh2(OAc)4 and provide enaminones
in good yields and excellent diastereoselectivity.
