On the following pages you find an installation guide for the
openthinclient-software to use and operate with Linux or Windows.

Systemanforderungen
RAM: minimum 500 MB, recommended 1 GB
Harddisk space: minimum 1 GB, recommended 2 GB
Several unassigned ports:
TCP: 1098, 1099, 2069, 3873, 4444, 4445, 8009, 8080, 8083, 10389
UDP: 67, 69 , 514, 2069, 4011
Sun Java 1.6 or 1.7, 32Bit (JRE is sufficient)
RAM: mindestens 500 MB, empfohlen 1 GB
Festplattenspeicher: mindestens 1 GB, empfohlen 2 GB
Folgende offene Ports:
TCP: 1098, 1099, 2069, 3873, 4444, 4445, 8009, 8080, 8083, 10389

In the same network a DHCP-server is required.
But it is not allowed to run the DHCP-server and the openthinclientserver on the same machine.
Im gleichen Netzwerk muss ein DHCP-Server vorhanden sein.
Allerdings darf der DHCP-Server nicht gleichzeitig auf der
openthinclient-Server Maschine laufen.
Installation in Windows
Installation unter Windows
Change to your download directory. To start the install process
doubleclick with administrator rights on the icon named:
(Replace [version] with the name or the version number of the
requested install file.)
Wechseln Sie in Ihr Download-Verzeichnis. Starten Sie mit
Administrator-Rechten die Installation durch Doppelklicken auf das
Icon:
(Ersetzen Sie [version] mit dem Namen bzw. Versionsnummer der
gewünschten Installationsdatei.)
openthinclient-[version].jar
Now you should see the graphical installer on your screen which will
guide you through the installation process.
Es öffnet sich der grafische Installationsassistent, der Sie durch den
Installationsprozess leiten wird.
Installation in Linux
Installation unter Linux
Change to your download directory and execute the following
command to start the installation as root-user or with the sudo
command:
(Replace [version] with the name or the version number of the
requested install file.)
Wechseln Sie in Ihr Download-Verzeichnis um die Installation mit
dem folgenden Befehl – mit root-Berechtigung oder mit dem sudo
Befehl – zu starten:
(Ersetzen Sie [version] mit dem Namen bzw. Versionsnummer der
gewünschten Installationsdatei.)

Now you should see the graphical installer on your screen which will

Language selection
Sprachauswahl
First you have to choose your language
(it is english and german available)

Licence requirements
Lizenzbestimmungen
On the next screen, you have to accept the licence GPL2 .
Read the licence requirements carefully and check with a cross. Then
click on the button „next“.
Auf dem nächsten Bildschirm müssen Sie die Lizenzbestimmungen
GPL2 bestätigen.
Lesen Sie die Lizenzbestimmungen durch, markieren es mit einem
Kreuz und klicken Sie auf den Button „weiter“.
Installation directory
Installationsverzeichnis
On the next screen you have to select the installation directory.
Auf dem nächsten Bildschirm wählen Sie das
Installationsverzeichnis.
For Windows it is per default:
C:\ProgramFiles\openthinclient
For Linux it is per default:
/opt/openthinclient
Here you can select the directory for the installation
Für Windows ist die Vorgabe:
C:\Programme\openthinclient
Für Linux ist die Vorgabe:
/opt/openthinclient

Server start as a service
Server als Dienst starten
The recommended default setting is to install the openthinclient
server as service so that the openthinclient-server starts
automatically at boot time.
Die empfohlene Standardeinstellung installiert den openthinclientServer als Dienst, so dass der openthinclient-Server automatisch
beim Bootvorgang gestartet wird.
Proxy settings
Proxy Einstellungen
For future updates of program packages and applications of your
openthinclient-server installation a access to the internet is
necessary. If you use a proxy in your network environment to access
the internet, select "use http proxy".
Für spätere Updates von Programmpaketen und Anwendungen Ihrer
Installation benötigt der openthinclient-Server einen Zugang zum
Internet. Wenn dies in Ihrer Netzwerkumgebung mittels Proxy
erfolgt, wählen Sie „Proxy verwenden“ aus.

If you have choosen a proxy server you can set its parameters here.
Wenn Sie einen Proxy-Server ausgewählt haben, können Sie die
Parameter hier einstellen.
Start copy sequence and finish the installation
Kopiervorgang starten und Installation abschließen
After this the copy sequence starts and the directory and files will be
installed.
Anschließend startet der Kopiervorgang und die Ordner und Dateien
werden installiert.
Congratulations!
The installation is completed and the openthinclient-server is
running.

Start the openthinclient-manager
Den openthinclient-Manager starten
After finishing the installation, you can now start the openthinclientmanager. The openthinclient-manager is a graphical user interface to
add and manage your thinclients. It is also for configuration of the
applications you want to run on the thinclients.
Nach erfolgreicher Installation können Sie nun den openthinclientManager starten. Der openthinclient-Manager ist eine grafische
Bedienoberfläche zum Anlegen und Verwalten der ThinClients,
sowie zum Konfigurieren und Zuordnen von Anwendungen zur
Ausführung auf den ThinClients.
Start via webbrowser
Start per Webbrowser
Open a webbrowser and connect to the server via the URL on Port
8080.
Öffnen Sie einen Webbrowser und geben Sie die URL auf den Port
8080 zum Server ein.
http://SERVERNAME_OR_IP:8080
(e.g. http://192.168.1.10:8080)
http://SERVERNAME_ODER_IP:8080
(z.B. http://192.168.1.10:8080)
Click in the “Start Manager” button.
Klicken Sie auf „Start Manager“
Now the “Java Web Start” is initiated.
After confirming the “approve execution of the application” the
openthinclient-manager starts with the graphical user interface.

Nach Bestätigung des folgenden Fensters „Ausführen der
Anwendung zustimmen“ startet der openthinclient-Manager mit
grafischer Bedienoberfläche.
If you want to work with the openthinclient-manager, it is first
necessary to connect to the openthinclient-server.
Therefore you have to connect with the LDAP-database on the server
– it is called “Realm”.
Click on the button "Connect to an existing realm".
Um mit dem openthinclient-Manager zu arbeiten, muss dieser als
erstes mit dem openthinclient-Server verbunden werden. Hierfür ist
es notwendig, sich mit der dortigen LDAP-Datenbank – genannt
„Umgebung“ – zu verbinden.
Klicken Sie auf den Button: „Mit Verwaltungsumgebung verbinden“

Connect to realm
Umgebung verbinden
The default password for the openthinclient-realm is
0pen%TC (first character is a zero) and has to be typed in.
It is recommended, the you check “Save password” with a cross.
Das Standardpasswort für die openthinclient-Umgebung ist
0pen%TC (erstes Zeichen ist eine Null) und muss hier eingetragen
werden. Am besten Sie kreuzen „Passwort speichern“ auch an.
On the next screen choose the "openthinclient" realm and click on
the finish button.
Wählen Sie auf dem nächsten Bildschirm die "openthinclient"
Umgebung aus und klicken auf „Beenden“.
The "openthinclient" realm is now shown in the openthinclientmanager. Click on left on the tree to expand the display and to
configure it.
Die „openthinclient“ Umgebung wird nun im openthinclient-Manager
dargestellt. Klicken Sie links auf den Baum um die Darstellung zu
erweitern und zu bearbeiten.

Configure the first thinclient
Anlegen des ersten ThinClients
The easiest way for creating a new thinclient is to just let it boot and
assign it afterwards.
Der einfachste Weg um einen neuen ThinClient zu erstellen ist es ihn
booten zu lassen und anschließend zuzuweisen.
Change the Bios-setting on PXE-boot, or change the boot priority on
First-Boot-Device = Network.
The running openthinclient-server "listens" on the network and
tracks all PXE-request.
Switch on the thinclient now. The thinclient obtains an IP-address
from the DHCP-Server and tries to boot over the network.
But this fails at the first time. However the thinclient would be found
in the openthinclient-manager.
Stellen Sie hierzu im Bios den ThinClient auf PXE-Boot, bzw. die
Bootreihenfolge auf First-Boot-Device = Network.
Der laufende openthinclient-Server "lauscht" im Netzwerk und
erkennt alle PXE-Anfragen.
Schalten Sie den ThinClient ein. Der ThinClient bekommt vom DHCPServer eine IP-Adresse und versucht dann seinen NetzwerkBootvorgang. Dieser wird allerdings beim ersten Mal scheitern.
Dafür wird er aber nun im openthinclient-Manager erkannt.
Open the node "PXE clients" on the left and you will find a new
thinclient entry.
(Possibly you click first on the right mouse-button and then on
“Refresh”)
Öffnen Sie links im Baum "PXE Clients". Sie werden nun einen neuen
ThinClient Eintrag finden.
(Eventuell klicken Sie zunächst mit dem rechten Mausknopf und dann
„Aktualisieren“)
Doubleclick on the desired MAC-entry or on the IP-address to start
the wizard.
Enter a (network-)name and a description.
Machen Sie einen Doppelklick auf den gewünschten MAC-Eintrag
bzw. IP-Adresse um den Assistenten zu starten.
Geben Sie dann einen (Netzwerk-)Namen und Beschreibung ein.
Assign the thinclient to a location and hardware type.
Weisen Sie dem ThinClient einen Standort und Hardwaretyp zu.

The entry in “PXE-Clients” is now disappered and there is a new
entry in “ThinClients”.
Der Eintrag unter "PXE-Clients" ist nun verschwunden und der neue
ThinClient taucht unter “ThinClients” auf.
And now switch off and switch on the thinclient one more time.
Now the thinclient would be supplied from the openthinclient-server
and the openthinclient-OS is starting over the network.
Schalten Sie den ThinClient nochmal aus und wieder ein.
Diesmal wird er vom openthinclient-Server bedient und das
openthinclient-OS wird über das Netzwerk geladen.
Work with the thinclient
Arbeiten mit ThinClients
In the next step you have to configure “Applications” und assign
them to the thinclient/s.
You can assign one or more applications to a thinclient. The
application can be autostarted, in fullscreen or window-mode.
Im nächsten Schritt konfigurieren Sie „Anwendungen“ und weisen
diese dem/den gewünschten ThinClients zu.
Sie können eine oder mehrere Anwendungen einem ThinClient zuweisen. Diese können automatisch gestartet werden, als Vollbild
oder Fenstermodus.
Die Zuweisung kann sowohl aus Sicht des ThinClients erfolgen, oder
aus Sicht der Anwendung.
D.h. „an diesem ThinClient ist diese Anwendung zugeordnet“, oder
„diese Anwendung läuft auf folgenden ThinClients“.
The assignment can be done from the thinclient view or application
view.
For example “on this thinclient is assigned the following application”
or “this application is running on the following thinclients”.
