FOREWORD
Sehr geehrte Kolleginnen und Kollegen,
Dear colleagues,
im Mai 2016 steht eine ganze Woche unter dem Generalthema des Alterns.
Wissenschaftlich erwiesen stellt uns die Tatsache, dass unsere Gesellschaft immer älter
wird, bereits heute und vor allem in der Zukunft vor enorme Heraus-forderungen.
Keine Profession des Gesundheitswesens – Pﬂege, Medizin, Ökonomie – kann die
Augen verschließen und die Veränderungen einfach auf sich zukommen lassen. Unser
gelobtes Gesundheitssystem kann nur Bestand haben, wenn eine Zusammenarbeit
zwischen allen Bereichen gelebt und damit eine Vereinbarkeit von ﬁnanziellen,
pﬂegerischen und medizinischen Zielen erreicht wird. Analysen, intensiver
interdisziplinärer Austausch und konkrete Strategien sind unverzichtbar um diese
Zukunft mitzugestalten – denn auch wir werden älter…
In May 2016, a full congress week will be held on the topic of “ageing”. It has been
scientiﬁcally proven that our society is getting older and we therefore now face
tremendous challenges, and will continue to do so in the future. No healthcare sector
(nursing, medicine, economy) can turn a blind eye to this and adopt a wait-and-see
attitude. Greater compatibility between ﬁnancial, nursing and medical objectives can
only be achieved through the collaboration of different sectors. This is necessary to
sustain our frequently praised health system. Analyses, intensive, interdisciplinary
exchanges and practical strategies are crucial for shaping our shared future – as we will
eventually get older, too ...
Diese erforderlichen wissenschaftlichen Diskussionen erhalten in der Zeit von 9. bis 14.
Mai 2016 ihren notwendigen Raum. In dieser Woche vereinen sich erstmals drei bisher
eigenständige Fachtagungen zu einer gemeinsamen, grenzüberschreiten-den und
interdisziplinären Tagungswoche in Villach. Sie haben die Möglichkeit einzelne
Veranstaltungen für sich auszuwählen oder auch an der ganzen Themenwoche, voll
mit interdisziplinären Vorträgen, Workshops, Podiumsdiskussionen und Industrieausstellungen teilzunehmen.
„Wir werden älter…“ – begleiten Sie uns durch Tage des Hörens, Denkens und
Diskutierens über Disziplinen hinweg. In diesem Sinne freuen wir uns auf interessante
Konferenztage reich an Diskussionsstoff und Entwicklungspotential für die Zukunft
unseres Gesundheitswesens mit Ihnen.
Long overdue scientiﬁc discussions will be held from the 9th to the 14th of May 2016.
For the ﬁrst time, three previously independent congresses will be held jointly in a
cross-border, interdisciplinary manner during a congress week in Villach. You will have
the opportunity to attend either individual events or the whole thematic week, with
many interdisciplinary lectures, workshops, panel discussions and industrial
exhibitions.
“We're living longer ...” – join us for these days of listening, thought and discussion
across the range of disciplines. We look forward to spending an interesting few
conference days with you, packed with plenty of subjects to discuss and many potential
developments for the future of our healthcare system.

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren!
Dear Conference Participants,
Die Herausforderungen an unser Gesundheitswesen, damit einhergehend an unser
Sozialsystem, werden in Zukunft nicht weniger werden. Aufgrund des demograﬁschen
Wandels – Anstieg der Lebenserwartung und dadurch Zunahme der Bevölkerung im
Alter über 60 Jahre – werden künftig viele Aufgaben von weniger und im Durchschnitt
älteren Menschen bewältigt werden müssen, wobei "alt sein" in erster Linie nicht
immer gleich "hilfe- und pﬂegebedürftig" zu sein bedeutet. Im Gegenteil: Die heutigen
SeniorInnen sind im Durchschnitt gesünder, vitaler und vielfach ﬁnanziell
unabhängiger und an keinem Rückzug aus der Gesellschaft interessiert.
The challenges to our healthcare system, and as a consequence also to our social
system, are not going to decrease in the future. Due to demographic changes – an
increase in life expectancy and therefore an increase in the population of people over
60 years old – in future, many jobs will have to be carried out by fewer people, who on
average will also be older. The state of “being old” will not always necessarily mean “in
need of help and care”. Quite the contrary: senior citizens these days are on average
healthier, more active, much more independent ﬁnancially and have no interest in
withdrawing from society.
Oberstes Ziel der österreichischen SeniorInnenpolitik muss daher vorerst eine
Sicherung und Verbesserung der Lebensqualität sein. Gezielte Maßnahmen wie
Erhaltung und Ausbau der Teilhabemöglichkeiten älterer Menschen an der
Gesellschaft sowie Förderung des Lebenslangen Lernens und Aktiven Alterns tragen
hier wesentlich bei. Dennoch ist natürlich auch der gesamte Bereich der Pﬂege und
Betreuung wichtiger Teil der Gesamtthematik. Mehr als 450.000 Menschen in
Österreich beziehen Pﬂegeld. Allein diese Zahl belegt die Bedeutung dieses Themas:
Pﬂegebedürftigkeit hat sich von einem eher individuellen Randphänomen zu einem
Risiko für alle Mitglieder der Gesellschaft entwickelt.
For the time being, the primary objective of policies concerning senior citizens in
Austria must therefore be to secure and improve the quality of life. Speciﬁc measures,
such as maintaining and expanding opportunities for older people to actively
participate in society, as well as supporting life-long learning and active ageing, make
an important contribution to this. The entire sector of care and support is, of course,
also an important part of the overall picture. More than 450,000 people in Austria
receive care allowance. This ﬁgure alone shows how important the subject is: the need
for care has developed from a rather individual fringe phenomenon into a risk for all
members of society.
Wenn wir nun bei dieser internationalen Konferenz in Villach den Blickpunkt „Wir
werden älter..“ gemeinsam diskutieren, so sollten wir die Gelegenheit nutzen,
umfassende Erörterungen in diesem Fachbereich zuzulassen. Wir stehen nur in
Österreich, sondern in ganz Europa vor sehr entscheidenden
gesellschaftspolitischen Herausforderungen und es liegt an uns,
gerade auch im Bereich des demograﬁschen Wandels die
richtigen Konsequenzen daraus zu ziehen.
When we discuss the core theme of “We're living longer …” at this international
conference in Villach, we should make use of the opportunity to allow a broad
discussion in this specialist ﬁeld. At the moment we are faced with critical, sociopolitical challenges, not only in Austria but also all over Europe and it is up to us,
especially in the ﬁeld of demographic change, to choose the appropriate steps to take.

Liebe Kongressteilnehmerinnen und Kongressteilnehmer!
Dear Conference Participants,
Ein wichtiges und zentrales Thema für mich als Landeshauptmann und die Landesregierung ist zweifellos die
Seniorenpolitik. Die ältere Generation verfügt über einen
Erfahrungsschatz und ein Wissen, auf die Kärnten aber auch
Österreich nicht verzichten können. Es muss daher ein großes
Ziel der Kärntner Verantwortungsträger sein, Seniorinnen und
Senioren dabei zu unterstützen, aktiv am gesellschaftlichen
Leben teilzunehmen und ihren Erfahrungsschatz einbringen
zu können. Unsere Gesellschaft ist auch vor dem Hintergrund des demo-graphischen
Wandels, auf die Mitwirkung aktiver Senioren angewiesen. Deshalb muss und wird der
Seniorenpolitik ein besonderer Stellenwert in der Arbeit in dieser Legislaturperiode
eingeräumt.
The politics of senior citizenship is, without doubt, one of the most important and
central topics for me as the Governor of Carinthia, and for the provincial government.
The older generation have a wealth of experience and knowledge which Carinthia and
Austria cannot afford to disregard. It is therefore imperative that political leaders in
Carinthia aim to support senior citizens in enjoying an active social life and in sharing
their wealth of experience. Our society, faced with demographic change, is also
dependent on the participation of active seniors. Therefore, our senior citizens must
(and will) receive special attention in the work carried out during this political term.
Umso mehr freut es mich als Landeshauptmann, dass sich zahlreiche Expertinnen und
Experten aus ganz Europa sowie Interessierte heuer in Kärnten zum 59.
Österreichischen Kongress für Krankenhausmanagement zusammengefunden haben.
Die Veranstaltung ist Teil der Themenwoche „Wir werden älter…“, welche insgesamt
sogar drei Kongresse beinhaltet. Die immer bedeutender werdende Thematik des
Alterns soll einmal mehr von allen Seiten beleuchtet werden. Wer die Tradition der
Kongresse des Veranstalters, der Sanicademia, kennt weiß, dass namhafte Referenten
aus ganz Europa (und darüber hinaus) Bekanntes, Aktuelles und Neues kritisch
beleuchten werden. Wir dürfen also auf konstruktive Diskussionen sowie Anregungen
für das Kärntner Gesundheitspersonal gespannt sein.
Ich danke allen Verantwortlichen für die Organisation des Kongresses und heiße Sie in
Kärnten herzlich willkommen. Ich wünsche dem Kongress viel Erfolg und Ihnen allen
einen schönen Aufenthalt in Kärnten.
As the Governor of Carinthia, I am particularly pleased that so many experts and
people interested in the subject from all over Europe have come together in Carinthia
for the 59th Austrian Convention for Hospital Management. The event is part of the
themed week “We're living longer …”, which consists of a total of three conferences.
This increasingly important topic of ageing will once more be explored from every
possible angle. Those familiar with the traditions of the conferences organised by
Sanicademia know that well-known speakers from all of Europe (and further aﬁeld) will
be in attendance to provide a critical evaluation of current issues, knowledge, and new
ﬁndings. We can all look forward to constructive discussions and impulses for
Carinthian healthcare professionals.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to Carinthia and thank all those responsible for
