Outline
To help non-Japanese viewers and language learners understand our news, we are
working on a system that automatically supplements our news texts with simpler Japanese
expressions or vocabulary translated into other languages, such as Korean.

How information is supplemented to help understand Japanese news texts
Features
● Supplementing information in context
Instead of replacing words mechanically, the original Japanese text is translated into easier Japanese or Korean
in full then the most appropriate word is chosen in each context.
● Providing news-oriented translation
The system uses statistical machine translation and is especially news-oriented because it builds on knowledge
from previous translations of news into easy Japanese and Korean.
Future plans
We will continue our work on improving the quality of translation, explore the optimal words and phrase unit for
adding supplementary information, and expand the system to English and other languages.
