Der Stadtrat von Berkeley, Kalifornien, verabschiedet folgende Resolution:
Aufruf zur Beendigung des U.S.-Wirtschafts-, Handels- und Finanzembargos gegen Kuba

Am Dienstag, dem 10. Mai, verabschiedete der Stadtrat von Berkeley
einstimmig eine Resolution, die zur Beendigung des U.S.-Wirtschafts-, Handelsund Finanzembargos gegen Kuba aufruft. Der Bürgermeister von Berkeley Tom
Bates und das Stadtratmitglied Kriss Worthington hatten dem Rat diese Initiative
vorgestellt.
Die Resolution unterstützt die zurzeit im Kongress und im Senat anhängige Resolution, die
Wirtschaftsblockade und die überholten Reisebeschränkungen zu beenden, gemäß den
Gesetzesvorlagen für den „Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act (HR664)“ von 2015, den „Cuba Trade Act
(HR3238)“ von 2015, den „Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act (S299) von 2015 und den „Freedom to
Export to Cuba Act (S491).
Außerdem hält der Manager des Berkeley-Stadtrats dazu an, Kopien der um die Beendigung der
Blockade bittenden Resolution an die kalifornischen Senatorinnen Barbara
Boxer und Diana Feistein und an die Kongressabgeordnete Barbara Lee zu schicken.
Am 26. Dezember 2002 wurden Berkeley, Kalifornien, und Palma Soriano, Santiago, Kuba,
offiziell zu Partnerstädten.
Rebecca Navarrete Davis, die Präsidentin des Partnerschaftsstädteverbandes von Berkeley und
Palma Soriano begrüßte die Resolution mit: „Die Menschen von Berkeley und Palma Soriano haben
viel gemeinsam. In unserer langen Partnerschaftsbeziehung haben wir gesehen, wie das U.S.Embargo das tägliche Leben unserer Brüder und Schwestern in Kuba beeinträchtigt. Wir sind stolz,
dass sich die Stadt Berkeley heute gegen die lange und verfehlte Politik gegenüber Kuba
ausgesprochen hat, Ich bin sicher, dass die Leute von Palma diese Nachricht mit enthusiastischer
Freude entgegennehmen, da sie eine bedeutsame Geste der Solidarität darstellt. Danke an die Leute
von Berkeley für die Verteidigung Kubas!“
Die Stadt Berkeley gehört zum Bezirk von Alameda im Staate Kalifornien (Vereinigte Staaten). Sie hat
über Hunderttausend Einwohner und liegt im Gebiet der Bucht von San Francisco. Die Stadt Berkeley
ist für ihre Universität bekannt, die „University of California, Berkeley,“ wird zu den besten der Welt
gezählt.
Im Monat März hatte der Stadtrat von Richmond im Bezirk Contra Costa mit einer ähnlichen Bevölkerung wie
die von Berkeley ebenfalls eine Resolution verabschiedet, die zur Beendigung des U.S.-Embargos gegenüber
Kuba aufrief.
Alicia Jrapko vom Internationalen Komitee für Frieden, Gerechtigkeit und Würde war in der Stadthalle
von Berkeley zugegen, als die Resolution verabschiedet wurde: „Diese Resolution ist die zweite von
einer Stadt im Gebiet der San Francisco-Bucht und ihren jeweiligen Stadträten verabschiedeten
Resolution, sie gibt die Stimmung der Mehrheit der Bevölkerung in den Vereinigen Staaten wider, die
normale Beziehungen zu Kuba pflegen will und die Aufhebung der Blockade befürwortet.“ Jrapko
fügte hinzu: „Als ein deutlicher werdendes Zeichen für den Wandel der öffentlichen Meinung in den
Vereinigten Staaten überlegen derzeit andere Städte Kaliforniens ähnliche Resolutionen.“

Against Cuba

On Tuesday, May 10, the Berkeley City Council unanimously
adopted a resolution calling for the end of the U.S. economic,
commercial and financial Embargo against Cuba. The Mayor of
Berkeley Tom Bates and Councilmember Kriss Worthington
introduced the initiative to the Council.
The resolution supports legislation currently pending in the
House and Senate that will end the economic blockade and outdated travel
restrictions: the Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act of 2015 (HR664), the Cuba Trade
Act of 2015 (HR3238), the Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act of 2015 (S299), and the
Freedom to Export to Cuba Act (S491).
In addition to asking for the end of the blockade the resolution instructs Berkeley
City Manager to send copies to the California Senators Barbara Boxer and Diana
Feinstein and Congresswoman Barbara Lee.
On December 26, 2002, Berkeley, California and Palma Soriano, Santiago de Cuba
became official Sister Cities.
Rebecca Navarrete-Davis, President of the Sister City Association Berkeley and
Palma Soriano welcomed the resolution "the people of Berkeley and Palma Soriano
in Cuba have many things in common. In our long sisterhood relationship we have
seen how the U.S. embargo affects the daily life of our brothers and sisters of
Cuba. We are very proud that today the city of Berkeley spoke out against this
long and failed policy toward Cuba. I am sure that the people of Palma will
receive the news with enthusiastic joy, since it represents an important gesture of
solidarity. Thanks to the people at Berkeley for defending Cuba!"
The city of Berkeley belongs to the County of Alameda, in the State of California
(United States). It has more than one hundred thousand inhabitants, and is located
in the San Francisco Bay Area. The city of Berkeley is known for its University, the
University of California, Berkeley, recognized as one of the best in the world.
In the month of March, the City Council of Richmond, in Contra Costa County, with
a population similar to the one in Berkeley, also adopted a resolution calling for
the end of the U.S. embargo against Cuba.
Alicia Jrapko, of the International Committee for Peace, Justice and Dignity was
present at Berkeley City Hall when the resolution was adopted. "This resolution is
the second one adopted by a city in the San Francisco Bay Area so far this year.
They were adopted by their respective City Councils as a reflection of the
sentiments of the majority of the people of the United States who want to have
normal relations with Cuba and are in favor of the lifting of the blockade." Jrapko
added "as a growing sign of change in public opinion in the United States, other
cities in California are currently considering similar resolutions".
