PEG, Campus Westend, Raum 1.G191 Gender Equality in the Age of Academic Capitalism: GENDER EQUALITY IN THE AGE OF ACADEMIC CAPITALISM MYRA MARX FERREE Cassandra and Pollyanna evaluate University Restructuring. This talk focuses on the paradoxes produced when measures enhancing gender equality are combined with academic capitalist policy agendas. These paradoxes are not just American, but play out in distinctive ways across all globalizing institutions of higher education especially as they increase managerial control over faculty and focus on national competitiveness. The talk compares doomsayers like Nancy Fraser who take a Cassandra-like position, warning that managerial control inevitably coopts feminist efforts for gender inclusivity, with those optimists who uncritically applaud gender equality interventions and like Pollyanna see these gains in some women’s status as signs of a deeper transformation to come. Comparisons between German and American academia highlight some of the paradoxes and pitfalls in how academic capitalism and feminism engage each other around specific issues. Myra Marx Ferree ist Alice H. Cook Professorin für Soziologie an der Universität Wisconsin-Madison. Sie war Direktorin des Zentrums für German and European Studies und ist Mitglied des Fachbereichs für Frauen- und Geschlechterstudien. 2005 war sie Gastwissenschaftlerin an der American Academy in Berlin, 2004 Maria-Jahoda-Gastprofessorin an der Ruhr Universität Bochum. Marx Ferree erhielt zahlreiche wissenschaftliche Auszeichnungen, u.a. den renommierten Jessie Bernard Preis für Geschlechterforschung. Ihre Arbeitsschwerpunkte liegen in den Bereichen feministische Organisationen und Politiken, Geschlecht und Familien, soziologische Theorie und Intersektionalität. Aktuell befasst sie sich mit dem Vergleich zwischen US-amerikanischem und deutschem Hochschulsystem und mit der Frage, welche Rolle Gleichstellungspolitiken bei der Neuformierung der Universitäten spielen.
