European Summer School
Fotografien reflektieren Geschichte nicht nur, sie sind selbst Produkte historischer Prozesse. Im Zentrum der
diesjährigen Sommer-Universität Ravensbrück steht die Frage nach Entstehungsbedingungen, Intentionen und
Überlieferung von Fotografien, die in Konzentrationslagern aufgenommen wurden.
Neben der institutionellen und privaten Fotografie des SS-Personals und heimlichen Aufnahmen der Häftlinge liegt
ein Schwerpunkt auf Fotografien der alliierten Streitkräfte, die diese bei der Befreiung der Lager anfertigten. Drittens
soll die Frage diskutiert werden, inwieweit die Fotografien der Lager das Bildgedächtnis in West- und Osteuropa sowie
darüber hinaus geprägt haben.
Ein besonderes Augenmerk liegt auf der Frage nach der Funktion und Bedeutung von Geschlechterstereotypen

focusing on the genesis, intentions and reception of photographs taken in concentration camps.
Besides institutional and official photographs and the private photographs of SS members as well as pictures taken
secretly by inmates we will emphasize photographs taken by the Allies while liberating the camps. The third part of the
summer school will include an analysis of photographs of the camps and will ask to what extent these images shaped
the visual memory of the camps in Eastern and Western Europe as well as beyond.
