Ethanol production is based on renewable resources, ethanol is nonnon toxic, has a high energy density, is liquid at room temperature and therefore the high effieff cient direct irect ethanol fuel cell represents an important component of an environmental friendly, endly, future power production. By operating in alkaline media, the reaction kinetics are improved and expensive platinum-based based catalysts can be avoided. Yet the C-C C bond breakage is a complex reaction and so far only few of todayʼss catalysts are able to accomplish it - and only at ini sufficient rates.
