Patent professionals who are based in Europe are obliged to keep an eye on developments in the United States on a piecemeal basis, but often cannot ﬁnd the time to gain
a proper appreciation of this complex, important patent culture. Rather than merely
presenting the framework of the US system and its manner of operation, you will be
guided towards an understanding of US patent law from the elements of the European system which you, as a European patent professional, are already familiar with.
In particular, the fundamental principles of US patent law will be contrasted with the
principles underlying the EPC, with emphasis on the US system of compact prosecution which gives rise to the peculiarity of US ‘Final’ Ofﬁce Actions. This will lead to
a practical discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of each type of possible
response to a US Final Ofﬁce Action.
