Happy New Year! Welcome back to our second edition of ‘The
EnglishTimes’hereatBertha-KruppRealschule.Afterthesuccessof
ourfirsteditioninDecember,itlooksasifweareheretostayfora
littlebitlonger.
NewYearisachancetostartoverandtrythingsyouhavealways
wantedtotryordothingsyouhavealwayswantedtodo.Aswellas
allthenormal NewYear’sresolutionsthatpeoplemakeincluding;
loosingweight,givingupsmokingandbeingmoreactive,formany
peopleitisachancetotakeupanewhobbyoractivity.Therefore
wehavechosenasouttopicthismonth‘hobbies’.
Onceagainallourarticlesaresubmittedbystudentsattheschool
andIamverygratefultoallthosewhohavecontributed,without
themwewouldnothaveamagazine!Iamalsoveryappreciativeto

Haveyoueverheardofpastels?No?
Well,pastelsaresticksthatlooklikechalkandtheyarealsoalittlesimilartochalk,butyoudonotuse
pastelstowriteonablackboard!Pastelsareusedtodrawonpaper.
Pastelsaremadeofpigments.Youcaneitherdrawlines
orabiggersurface;itdependsonhowyouholdthepastel
whiledrawing.Whenyoudrawbiggersurfaces,youoften
blur the colour to create a smooth segue between
coloursortomakethedrawinglookmorerealistic.
Pastelsarenotveryeasytouseforbeginnersofdrawing,
becauseyoucannotdrawwiththemlikeyoucanwitha
pencil or with colouring pencils. Well, of course you
could,butitwouldnotlooklikeadrawingdrawnwiththe
correcttechnique.
Mostartistswhodrawwithpastelsdrawlandscapesor
similarimpressionisticsubjects.
Youwillalsoneedalotmoreequipmentthanjustthepastels.Firstofall,youwillneedspecialpastelpaper,
whichisrough,sothatthepigmentsstaywhereyouwantthemtobe.
Youshouldalsokeepinmind,thatthepastels’coloursarenotreallymixable.Thatmeansthatyouneeda
lotofdifferentshadesofcolourstodraw realisticpictures.Ofcourse,theamount ofcoloursyouneed
dependsonwhatyouwouldliketodraw.
Ifyoualreadyknowhowtodrawwithpastels,youcanimproveyourskillswithtoolslikebrushes,abox
cutterorascalpelandoneortwopaperstumps.Paperstumpsareforblurringdetailedoutlines.Forbigger
surfaces,itisbettertouseyourfingers.

recommend the book “Pastellmalerei - Farbe,
Form &Ausdruck–schrittweisegestalten”from
the author Barbara Rogge-Fuchs. It shows you
differenttechniquesandexplainstoyouhowto
usedifferenttools.

saythatthingsaregoingverywell.InDecembertheclass9CcompletedanEnglishprojectdaywherethey
learntaboutEnglishChristmastraditionsandhadtheopportunitytobakesometraditionalEnglishfoodand
traditionalGermanfood,whichtheythensentinaparcelexchangetoEngland.Theyalsohadtheopportunity
tomakecontactwiththepupilsbysendingthemChristmascards.Inreturnwereceivedalovelyparcelback
fromtheUKwithtraditionalEnglishfoodsthatthepupilshadnevertriedbeforeincludingmincepiesand
Christmaspudding.
Kirstinandmearealsopleasedthatwehavesuccessfullystartedapenfriendexchangeallowingpupilsinthe
10 and 9 Klasse to receive a pen friend in the UK. They have already began writing emails to each other
allowingeachsidetoimprovetheirlanguageskillsandforthepupilstolearnabouteachothersculturesfrom
someonetheirownage.Iampleasedtohearofsomeofthelovelyemailsthepupilshavebeensendingand
receiving.
Thenextpartofourprojecthasalreadybegunherewiththe10KlasselookingataspectsofIndianculturein
theUKandwhatitmeanstobeBritishandthe6KlasseexploringthedifferencebetweenculturesinEngland,
Wales,ScotlandandNorthernIrelandanddiscussingwhetheronewholeBritishcultureexists.

imneuenJahrleidernurwenigNeueszuunseremProjektbeitragenkönnen–aberdaswirdsichändern.
NochimvergangenenJahrhabenwir–hoffentlich-erfolgreichBrieffreundschaftenindieWegeleitenkönnen
undeinigeSchülerhabenschonvontollenUnterhaltungenundEmail-Wechselnberichtet.Außerdemhaben
sich meine Schülerinnen und Schüler sehr über das Päckchen von euch gefreut und das Auspacken ist in
wirklicheVöllereiausgeartet.Milkaschokolade,LebkuchenundSpekulatiussindhiertatsächlicheineRarität,
über die die Lernenden sich sehr gefreut haben. Auch haben sich viele meiner Schüler daran beteiligt,
Weihnachtskartenaneuchzuschreiben und ich glaube,daswardasersteMal,dasssieimDeutschlernen
tatsächlicheinenSinngesehenhaben.
Im Moment arbeiten wir gerade daran, ein Video für euch zu filmen, in dem wir die de Ferrers Academy
vorstellenwollen.Ichhoffe,dassdasbaldfertigseinwird,damitwirendlichmitdemgemeinsamenProjekt
loslegenkönnen.LetzteWochehabenwirbereitsüberdenBegriff„Heimat“gesprochen,daichglaube,dass

topics; about Morocco the country where I come
from, or as Moroccans would say, the only place
whereMediterraneanSeameetstheAtlanticOcean,
orthecountrywheretheoceanmeetsthedesert.I
alsowanttotellyouaboutfashion.FirstofallIwill
tell you some facts about Morocco. Morocco is
locatedinthenorthofAfrica.TogetherwithAlgeria
andTunisiatheybuilduptheMaghreb.Moroccois
the most northern country, that’s why Moroccans
name I Maghreb, that means ‘north’ in Arabic.
Morocco’s capital is Casablanca. Casablanca is also
oneofthemostfamouscitiesalongwithMarrakesh,
Agadir and Fes. Casablanca is well known because
thefilm‘Casablanca’wassetinCasablancaandit’s
alsooneoftheonlycitiesinAfricawherehighbrand
fashion shops such as Channel, Lois Vuitton and
Givenchy are. In Casablanca you can also find the
second biggest mosque in the world. The name of
themosqueisHassanII,namedafterourKing’sdad.
Themosquehasroomforover800,000peopleand
itisover200metreshigh.Itisalsoverypopularfor
touristsbecauseitis onthe beachandnexttothe
shoppingcentreofCasablanca.Thatwasafewfacts
aboutCasablancaandnowIwilltellyousomething
aboutthe othercities,forexampleMarrakesh.For
meitisoneofthemostwonderfulcitiesintheworld.
MarrakeshisformetherealdefinitionofMorocco.
It’sinthesouthofMoroccothat’swhyit’svery
hotthereeveninwinter!Marrakeshisknownas

Marrakesh is red. That’s because in the past
they built them with a special material that I
don’tknowthenameof,butthismaterialwas
red and protects the people from the heat.

to keep the typical Marrakeshian style.
Marrakeshalsohasoneofthebiggestandthe
mostfamousmarkets,oraswecallthemsouks,

winmoney.Marrakeshalsohasthemostfamous

house in Tangler, another city in Morocco).
Marakesh and Casablanca are one of the ten
most visited cities in the world. 20% of the
Marrakeshian population are not real
Moroccansm, they are foreigners from Spain,
FranceorEngland.NeartoMarrakeshisthemost
beautiful city in the world, Agadir, the place
wheremanysurfingfreakoncewere.Agadirisin
the south of Morocco near the Sahara and the
Berbers also live in Agadir. In Agadir the main
languageisBerbicbutitisnotthenormalBerbic
thatisspokenintheeastofMorocco,itisanother
dialectcalled‘cousse’.FormeAgadiristhemost
perfect city in the world. It is very oriental but
alsoverymodernIthink.Ialsolovethecityso.
muchbecauseit’sacitywhereeveryonewantsto
keep in vogue. Agadirens have a lot to do with
fashion.Everyteenagerhastheirownstyleanda
verygoodstyletoo.That’salsowhymanyfamous

and French Montana like to go there. That was
somethingsaboutthemostimportantcitiesand
the cities you should keep in mind. For me
Morocco is the most perfect country and I am
100%proudtobeaMoroccangirl.Moroccoisa
mix of everything; we have desserts, beaches,
mosquesbutalsochurches,heatandmountains
where you can go snowbording or visit the
biggestportinAfrica.Moroccowasalsothefirst
countrythatsignedatreatywththeUSA.Itwasa
treatyoffriendship,thatthetwocountrieswould
notattackeachother.Moroccoalso hasoneof
thebiggesthashishfelds.Ithinkthatisbecause
inthe past,theking ofMorocco releaseda law
thatsaid thateveryberbercanhaveahashish
feld legaly, and that the berbers can consume
drugslegallybecausetheArabicpeoplegotthe
country.Sohereweresomefactsaboutmyhome
countryMorocco,thecounrtywheretheocean
meets the dessert and the country you should
visitandkeepinmind.Ihopeyoulikeditandit
wasnottooboringforyou.
