Im Südosten Sloweniens befindet sich die
mittelalterliche Stadt Novo Mesto, deren Pe
ripherie überwiegend landwirtschaftlich ge
prägt ist. Um so mehr hebt sich das neue
»Centre Portoval«, ein Supermarkt mit ange
schlossenem Kinocenter und dreigeschos
sigem Parkdeck, von seiner Umgebung ab.
Als Brückenkopf an der südöstlichen Einfall
straße zum Zentrum bildet es den Stadtein
gang zwischen Busbahnhof, Sportplatz und
Naherholungsgebiet und ist mit seinem bun
ten Baukörper schon von weitem sichtbar.
Der grüne Sockelbau beherbergt den Su
permarkt. Auf seinem Dach befindet sich ei
ne begehbare Holzplattform mit Blick über
den Park, die am höchsten Punkt des abfal
lenden Grundstücks ebenerdig von der
Straße zugänglich ist. Eingerahmt wird diese
halböffentliche Freifläche von drei verschie
denfarbenen Kuben: Der blaue Quader be
inhaltet Mietbüros, der gelbe Einzelhandels
geschäfte. Im Obergeschoss des roten und
größten Kubus, der zur Stadt hin ausgerich
tet ist, sind zwei Kinosäle mit je 224 Sitzplät
zen untergebracht, im Untergeschoss vier
weitere kleinere Kinos. Die Erschließungs
ebene ist das Erdgeschoss. Von der Straße
sowie vom Parkdeck gelangt man in die
Cafeteria, die mit Laufbändern an die tiefer
liegenden Stellplätze angeschlossen ist und
als Vorbereich für beide Nutzungen dient.
Morgens treffen sich hier Schüler, die auf
den Bus warten, am Abend Kinogäste und
Billiardspieler. Großzügige Verglasungen er
lauben den freien Durchblick von den Spiel
automaten in den Supermarkt, zur Straße
und aufs Parkdeck. Nur ein großmaschiges
Rollgitter teilt nach Ladenschluss Cafeteria
und Supermarkt und wirkt wie ein Schaufen
ster. Nachts leuchten die transluszenten,
einschaligen Polycarbonatfassaden als
Zeichen für das neue Leben vor den Toren
der Altstadt.
Die Zusammenlegung der verschiedenen
Nutzungen schafft mehrere Synergieeffekte:
Eine ganztägige Auslastung des Cafés und
der gebührenpflichtigen Parkplätze sowie die
Möglichkeit, anstelle mehrerer Flachbauten
ein markantes Gebäude zu schaffen, das der
städtebaulichen Situation gerecht wird.

The town of Novo Mesto was founded in
1365 and is situated in the Krka Valley in
south-east Slovenia. Here, the colourful new
Portoval Centre forms a link between the urban core and the outlying housing estates.
Occupying a site next to a bus station and
alongside sports and recreation areas, the development comprises a number of differently
coloured cubes that are visible over a great
distance. On top of the green plinth structure,
which houses the supermarket, are three further volumes. In the blue cube are leasable office spaces, while the yellow cube houses a
number of small shop units of various descriptions. Between these tracts is a timberboarded roof terrace, which, in view of the

level at the highest point of the site and is,
therefore, directly accessible from the road.
The third and largest cube is the red superstructure situated at the end facing the town
centre. In addition to a multiplex development
with six cinemas, this section contains spaces
for billiard tables and slot machines.
The central tract forms the hub of the whole
scheme. Here, young people meet at the
café-bar in the morning while waiting for the
bus to school. In the evening, after the supermarket has closed, this space also provides a
lively foyer for the cinemas, affording access
to the complex from two sides. Extensive
areas of glazing allow unimpeded views to the

street and the car-parking deck. After shopping hours, a window-like, large-mesh roller
shutter divides the supermarket on its open
side from the cafeteria area.
The mixture of functions generates a synergetic effect through the multiple use of the
parking deck at different times of day. The
coffee house is also well-frequented until late
in the night. The combination of functions
allowed the creation of a striking built form
appropriate to the urban situation at the entrance to the town and contrasted with the
many low-rise buildings in the area. At night,
the translucent polycarbonate facades of the
cinemas are a token of the new life that has
developed before the gates of the city.
