Do politicians in general do too little to alleviate or prevent
the distress and misery suffered by children around the
world?
A very definite yes! The level of incompetence and inefficiency is
pitiful. Too few people have any visions. There are so many political lobbyists who only pursue their own interests although they
know better. This short-sighted approach is what I find most
shocking. I fail to understand it at all!
From the very beginning of your career, your songs have
had a social or political message. What was the public’s initial reaction to this level of commitment coming from a
rock singer like yourself?
Unsurprisingly, people said some pretty bitchy things. But they
tended to forget that rock’n’roll is supposed to be political. In
1986, we performed in the German Democratic Republic, where
it was necessary to “encrypt” any political messages we wanted
to put across. As we did in the song “Über sieben Brücken”, for
example, which was written by artists from the GDR.
You once said, “It’s not my job to tell the country fairy stories.” What did this statement mark the start of?
The Tabaluga Project. In 1983, we built our own studio in
Tutzing just outside Munich, where I got to know Dr Jürgen
Haerlin, who ran the Gabrielenheim, a home for disadvantaged
children. I was very impressed by what he was doing and we set
up Horizon e.V. to support his admirable work with campaigns
to collect money and by appearing together at public events in
order to sensitise society to the problems that these children
have to face. At some time, the idea of the rock fairy tale “Tabaluga und die Reise zur Vernunft” (Tabaluga and the journey to
reason) was born. The main character, a little green dragon,
fascinated the kids so much that the home changed its name to
“Tabaluga”. This developed into the Tabaluga Children’s Foundation and I became its patron. Today, it consists of a number of
institutions and cooperates very closely with the Peter Maffay
Foundation on Mallorca.
In the 1980s, you got together with friends to set up the
Horizon e.V. charity.
This was triggered by the devastating explosion at the Chernobyl
nuclear power station in 1986. We collected money for those
most badly hit by the catastrophe: the kids. To ensure that the
money wasn’t frittered away, but used for specific objectives, we
created Horizon e.V. Which we nowadays use to organise a variety of campaigns, such as our “Encounters – An Alliance for
Children” project.
Was setting up the Peter Maffay Foundation a logical consequence for you of the Tabaluga project?
Let’s put it this way: Tabaluga opened up the way. I suddenly
realised that we wanted to make a more active contribution towards helping the smallest members of our society. We just have
to take a proper look: they are victims of senseless wars, social

Tun Ihrer Meinung nach Politiker generell zu wenig, um die
Not und das Elend der Kleinsten auf dieser Welt zu lindern
oder gar zu verhindern?
Ein deutliches Ja! Das Niveau des Unvermögens und der Ineffizienz ist erbärmlich. Es fehlt an Visionen. In der Politik gibt es
zu viele Lobbyisten, die wider besseres Wissen nur eigene
Interessen verfolgen. Diese Kurzsichtigkeit ist erschreckend. Sie
macht mich perplex!
Schon zu Beginn Ihrer Karriere bezogen Sie mit Ihren Songs
gesellschaftspolitisch Position. Nahm die Öffentlichkeit dem
Rock ’n’ Roller dieses Engagement anfangs ab?
Natürlich wurde gelästert. Manche haben eben übersehen, dass
es zum Rock ’n’ Roll gehört, politisch zu sein. Wir traten 1986 in
der damaligen DDR auf. Da konnte man gar nicht anders, als
politische Botschaften verschlüsselt zu senden, wie beispielsweise mit dem Lied «Über sieben Brücken», einer Komposition
von DDR-Künstlern.
Sie haben mal gesagt: «Ich bin doch nicht der Märchenonkel
der Nation!» Welcher Stein geriet mit diesem Satz ins
Rollen?
Das Tabaluga-Projekt. 1983 bauten wir uns am Starnberger See
ein eigenes Studio. Ich lernte Dr. Jürgen Haerlin, den Leiter
des Gabrielenheims für benachteiligte Kinder, kennen und schätzen. Über Horizon e.V. unterstützten wir sein bewundernswertes Engagement mit Sammelaktionen und gemeinsamen öffentlichen Auftritten, um das Bewusstsein in der Gesellschaft für die
Thematik der Kinder zu vertiefen. Irgendwann stand die Idee
zum Rockmärchen «Tabaluga und die Reise zur Vernunft» im
Raum. Die Hauptfigur, ein kleiner grüner Drache, faszinierte die
Kinder so sehr, dass sie das Heim auf den Namen «Tabaluga»
umtauften. Daraus entstand die Tabaluga Kinderstiftung, deren
Schirmherr ich wurde. Sie umfasst diverse Institutionen und
kooperiert eng mit der Peter Maffay Stiftung auf Mallorca.
In den 80er-Jahren gründeten Sie mit Freunden auch die
gemeinnützige Organisation Horizon e.V.
Auslöser dafür war die verheerende Reaktorexplosion im
Kernkraftwerk Tschernobyl 1986. Wir sammelten Geld für die
vom Unglück betroffenen Kinder. Damit dieses Geld gezielt eingesetzt werden konnte, riefen wir die Horizon e.V. ins Leben.
Darüber wickeln wir heute noch viele Aktionen ab. Wie beispielsweise das Projekt «Begegnungen – Eine Allianz für Kinder».
War die Gründung der Peter Maffay-Stiftung für Sie eine
logische Folge des Tabaluga-Projekts?
Sagen wir’s so: Tabaluga war der Türöffner. Ich wusste plötzlich,
dass wir noch aktiver dazu beitragen wollten, den Kleinsten in
unserer Gesellschaft zu helfen. Wir müssen nur richtig hinschauen: Sie sind Opfer sinnloser Kriege, gesellschaftlicher Missstände,
häuslicher Gewalt, von Drogen, Missbrauch und vielem mehr.
Dadurch erleiden sie schwere seelische Traumata. Dabei sollten
Kinder doch so lange, wie es geht, Kinder bleiben dürfen.

Wie muss man sich die Arbeit der Peter Maffay Stiftung
und der Tabaluga Kinderstiftung vorstellen?
Beide Stiftungen verstehen sich als ein sich gegenseitig ergänzendes Hilfsnetz. Kernstück der Peter Maffay-Stiftung ist das Ferienhaus auf der Finca Ca’n Llompart in Pollença auf Mallorca.
Umgeben von Natur und im schützenden Rahmen lernen dort
traumatisierte und benachteiligte Kinder und Jugendliche aus
den Tabaluga-Institutionen neue Perspektiven, Lebenswerte
und -welten kennen. Es gibt einen Ökogarten, eine hofeigene
Schaf- und Ziegenhaltung mit Molkerei und Käserei, eine
Kunstwerkstatt, die Kinder können musizieren und reiten.
Zeitweise wird ein Zweimaster, das «Tabaluga»-Schiff, für therapeutisches Segeln auf grosse Fahrt in den Dienst der Stiftung
gestellt.
Ihr jüngstes Engagement ist das weltumspannende Kinderhilfs-Netzwerk «Begegnungen – Eine Allianz für Kinder».
Ein Projekt, in das ich grosse Hoffnungen setze. Als Schirmherrin konnten wir Bundeskanzlerin Dr. Angela Merkel gewinnen. Der Präsident des Europäischen Parlaments, Josep Borell
Fontelles, übernahm die europäische Projektpatenschaft. Und
ausserdem gelang es uns, die weltweit operierende Kinderhilfsorganisation World Vision ins Boot zu holen, deren Netzwerk
und Know-how viele Möglichkeiten eröffnet. Zudem unterstützten namhafte Sponsoren das Projekt.

What work do the Peter Maffay Foundation and the
Tabaluga Children’s Foundation perform?
Both foundations are part of a mutually complementary aid
network. The heart of the Peter Maffay Foundation is the holiday home at the Finca Ca’n Llompart on the island of Mallorca.
In an natural setting and protective environment, traumatised
and disadvantaged children and adolescents from the Tabaluga
institutions are given the chance to gain new perspectives and
experience other worlds beyond their cultural boundaries. Under
the direction of professional therapists, they can play an active
role in the eco-garden, the sheep and goat farm with its creamery and cheese dairy and in the arts and crafts workshop. They
can make music, ride horses and now and then go for therapeutic sailing trips aboard the two-masted “Tabaluga” ship that is
placed at the disposal of the Foundation.
Your latest and most ambitious project is “Encounters – An
Alliance for Children” which is a global network to help
children.
I have high hopes for this project. We were lucky enough to get
the German Federal Chancellor Dr Angela Merkel to assume
overall patronage for the project. The President of the European

Wie entstand das Netzwerk? Was ist das Ziel?
2006 bereisten wir vier Kontinente und knüpften in zwölf Ländern Kontakte zu Politikern, Persönlichkeiten des öffentlichen
Lebens, Musikern und SängerInnen sowie potenziellen Paten
und besuchten deren Kinderhilfsprojekte. Es gelang uns, diese
Menschen zusammenzuführen, mit dem gemeinsamen Ziel, ein
internationales Netzwerk der Hilfe zu knüpfen, das sich in den
Dienst der Kinder dieser Welt stellt. Um darauf aufmerksam zu
machen, produzierten wir mit zwölf Musikern aus diesen Ländern das Album «Begegnungen». Ein Dialog, der uns gleichzeitig an humanitäre, soziale und ökologische Brennpunkte unserer Erde führt. Konsequente Fortsetzung und Weiterentwicklung
war das Album «Begegnungen – Eine Allianz für Kinder».
Thema Reisen: Was war ihr schönstes Erlebnis?
Ich hatte das Glück, eine Weile bei den Oglala-Lakota-Indianern
in der Pine Ridge Reservation im Südwesten des Bundesstaates
Süddakota zu sein. Dort ist mir eine grosse Ehre erwiesen worden. Ich erhielt während einer Zeremonie den indianischen
Namen Wanbli Ho Waste, auf Englisch: Good Voice Eagle, was
übersetzt «Der Adler mit der guten Stimme» heisst. Gleichzeitig
wurde ich in den Clan meines älteren Bruders Leonard Little
Finger aufgenommen. Darauf bin ich sehr stolz. ✚
Parliament, Josep Borell Fontelles, is the European project
patron. In addition, we were able to get World Vision, the internationally active children’s aid agency, on board, whose network
and know-how have opened up a wealth of possibilities. We
also have a lot of well-known sponsors supporting the project.
How did the network come about? What is its goal?
In 2006, we established contacts in twelve countries with politicians, personalities from public life, musicians and singers, as
well as with potential patrons and visited local children’s aid
projects. It proved possible to get these people together with
the common goal of creating an international network dedicated to helping children all round the globe. In order to draw
attention to this, we gathered twelve musicians from these countries together to produce the “Encounters” album – a dialogue
that also focuses on humanitarian, social and ecological problems
around the world. The logical continuation of this was the album
“Encounters – An Alliance for Children”.
On the subject of travel: what has been your most memorable experience to date?
I was fortunate enough to spend some time with the
OglalaLakota Indians on the Pine Ridge Reservation in the
south-west of South Dakota. A great honour was conferred on
me there: during a ceremony, I was given the Indian name of
Wanbli Ho Waste, which translates into English as Good Voice
Eagle. At the same time, I was inducted into the clan of my
elder brother Leonard Little Finger. I am very proud of that. ✚

Peter Maffay ist seit fast 40 Jahren einer der bedeutendsten und
erfolgreichsten Protagonisten deutschsprachiger Rockmusik. Unzählige seiner Alben erlangten Top-10- oder Platin-Status. Bislang
verkaufte der 57-Jährige über 35 Millionen Tonträger.
Der in Rumänien geborene Musiker begreift sich schon früh als politisch denkender und handelnder Mensch. Ob in der Friedensbewegung, für den Umweltschutz oder gegen Fremdenfeindlichkeit und
Rechtsradikalismus: Maffay engagiert sich.
Der Wille, sich für notleidende Kinder einzusetzen, formt sich 1983.
Anstoss ist die Kinderoper «Tabaluga und die Reise zur Vernunft». Er
schreibt die Musik zu dem Rockmärchen und steht mit Kindern auf
der Bühne. Maffay wird Schirmherr der Tabaluga Kinderstiftung in
Tutzing am Starnberger See. Die heilpädagogisch-therapeutische
Einrichtung für traumatisierte Kinder umfasst ein Heim, Wohngruppen, Familienstellen, einen Bauernhof in Peissenberg, einen
Montessori-Kindergarten, das Sternstundenhaus, ein überregionales
Therapiezentrum sowie Patenprojekte im Ausland. Ausserdem gründet der Rocksänger mit Freunden die gemeinnützige Organisation
Horizon e.V.
Im Jahr 2000 entsteht die Peter Maffay Stiftung auf Mallorca, deren
Vorsitz er übernimmt. Sie ist eng mit der Tabaluga-Kinderstiftung
vernetzt. 2006 legt er den Grundstein für das weltumspannende
Projekt «Begegnungen – Eine Allianz für Kinder».
Für sein soziales Engagement wurde Peter Maffay 1996 das Bundesverdienstkreuz verliehen. 2005 erhielt er den Sonderpreis des internationalen B.A.U.M.-Umweltpreises, 2006 den World Vision Charity
Award.
For nearly 40 years, Peter Maffay (57) has been one of the most
important and successful figures in German rock music. Virtually all
his albums have made it into the top ten or gone platinum. To date,
he has sold over 35 million discs and tapes.
Born in Romania, Maffay early developed a political conscience
and acted on his convictions. He has been active in such varied
areas as the peace movement and environmental protection and
fights against racial intolerance and right-wing extremism.
He decided to dedicate himself to helping children in need in 1983
after the production of the children’s opera “Tabaluga und die Reise
zur Vernunft”. He wrote the music to this rock fairy tale and
appeared with children on stage. Maffay became the patron of the
Tabaluga Children’s Foundation in Tutzing. This therapeutic facility
for traumatised children comprises residential quarters, external
groups integrated into the local community, family units, a working
farm in Peissenberg, a Montessori kindergarten, the Sternstundenhaus supraregional therapy centre and various projects abroad. In
addition, the rock star got together with friends to form the Horizon
e.V. charity.
He is also head of the Peter Maffay Foundation which was set up in
Mallorca in 2000 and enjoys close ties with the Tabaluga Children’s
Foundation. In 2006, Maffay laid the foundations for the global
project “Encounters – An Alliance for Children”.
In 1996, Peter Maffay was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal
Republic of Germany for his social commitment. In 2005, he received the special prize of the international B.A.U.M. environmental
awards and in 2006 the World Vision Charity Award.
