U4 closure
30 April to
4 September
Making the U4 fit for the future
OVERVIEW OF CLOSURES
© Wiener Linien/ Johannes Zinner
The ‘green’ underground line has connected Hütteldorf in
the west and Heiligenstadt in the north of Vienna for almost
35 years. For the first time since being commissioned, the
U4 is being interrupted for several months due to modernisation work. In spring 2016, the U4 modernisation project
will enter its most intensive phase: the tracks and platforms
between Hütteldorf and Schönbrunn will be completely
renovated.
 30 April to 1 July 2016: Hütteldorf – Hietzing closed:
During this construction phase, the U4 will run
between Hietzing and Heiligenstadt
 2 July to 4 September 2016: Hütteldorf –
Schönbrunn closed:
At the start of the school holidays, the U4 will run
between Schönbrunn and Heiligenstadt
Replacement services during the
U4 shutdown
WHEN THE U4 IS NOT OPERATING, THE FOLLOWING
ALTERNATIVE LINES WILL STILL BE IN SERVICE:
 Trams: Lines 49, 52 and 58 run very close and at times
parallel to the U4 tracks. Just a few stations on these
tramlines are all that separate you from the main underground transit stations. Depending on the line, more and
longer units than usual will be in service, meaning that
these will arrive at shorter intervals and offer more space.
In order to carry out this extensive work in just four months,
the U4 will only operate between Heiligenstadt and Hietzing
from 30 April until 1 July. Hietzing will then be the temporary
terminus. From 2 July to 4 September, work will continue
beyond Hietzing and the Schönbrunn station will temporarily become the new terminus.
Renewing the infrastructure will lay the foundations for
a more reliable U4. The entire route served by this underground line will be back in service just in time for the start of
the school year on 5 September.
 Express (Schnellbahn) or regional trains: After a short ride
on the S45, S50 and S80, or on regional trains, it is possible to transfer to the underground network at Ottakring,
Heiligenstadt, Handelskai, Westbahnhof, Meidling (train
station) or at the central train station (Hauptbahnhof).
The S45 departs around every 10 minutes travelling to
the north of Vienna. For ÖBB passengers travelling by
express train (Schnellbahn) or regional train from Hütteldorf, it is better not to transfer at Hütteldorf, but to
continue on towards the city centre and debark at one of
the later alternative transfer hubs. It only takes about 7
minutes, for example, from Hütteldorf to Westbahnhof
via the REX or S50 services.

 Replacement bus service U4Z: A replacement bus service
(line U4Z) will be operating along the route of the closed
stations on the U4 line. It is also possible to circumvent
the closed stations using this service. However, the
punctuality of this service depends on other road users,
whereas trams and fast trains run independently of road
traffic. This service is a possible alternative, especially for
local residents near the closed stations Ober and Unter
St. Veit and Braunschweiggasse.
 As of 2 July 2016, the second phase of the construction
work will start and the U4 closures will be extended
beyond Schönbrunn. Schönbrunn station will then
temporarily become the terminus. From 2 July, bus lines
56A and 56B will operate via Hietzing to Schönbrunn, so
that a direct connection to the U4 will still be possible.
Please plan for around an additional 15 minutes on your
journey time!

Cycling around the U4 closure
The U4 will be closed during the cycling season. From May to
September, many Viennese use bikes, both to and from work
and for daily errands.
The following cycle routes will remain unaffected along the
U4 tracks: The Wienflussradweg cycle path runs 3.6 kilometres from Hütteldorf to Hietzing without traffic lights and
stop signs. The path runs alongside the Wienfluss canal. The
cycle route along the Auhofstraße is signposted and traffic-calming measures exist.
If you’re in the mood, it is possible to cycle to Hietzing,
Schönbrunn or directly to the city centre. It takes between
nine and 15 minutes from Hütteldorf to Hietzing by bike,
depending on your speed.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR TAKING BICYCLES ON
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION:
 Underground: Monday to Friday (9:00 – 15:00 and
from 18:30). On Saturdays, Sundays and public
holidays, bicycles are allowed on the underground
all day. Areas where bicycles are permitted are
marked on the train doors.
 Express and regional trains: When enough space
is available, bicycles can be taken onto trains
without any time restrictions (no reservation
possible).
 For safety reasons, bicycles are not permitted on
trams and buses.
The Mobility Agency (Mobilitätsagentur) of the City of Vienna will provide additional bike stands during the closure of
the U4. Free bike checks as well as e-bikes and folding bikes
to try out are intended to encourage people to cycle more. In
May and June, the Mobility Agency information service point
will be situated at the underground station Hietzing and, in
July and August, at Schönbrunn station. You can find further
information regarding cycling during the U4 closure under
www.fahrradwien.at.

From 6 June to 1 July 2016, work on the reversing loop at
Hietzing will make it necessary for trains to turn around at
Hietzing. This means that the departure platforms at Hietzing and Schönbrunn stations will continuously alternate
during this period.
Staff and platform displays will inform passengers which
platform the next train will depart from.
