Tableau
Vivant
A music to movement traslation,
Hauptsitz Berne,
2015
Read Report
The «Tableau Vivant» is a Object, that translates music into movement by analyzing amplitude and
frequency. It is a instrument and an installation in one. The interest of the Artist is to find ways of making music visible. Fabian Gutschers latest works explore the topic of sound and movement. The first
Try-Out he did with the electronic Trio «Inside the Baxter Building». Each of the tree musicians had
the possibility to send there improvised music signal seperatly to the «Tableau Vivant» to create instant
movements which were projected to a screen by thee light. A digital choreography of the direct translated music arised.

Unlike the museum, the forest is not a sacred space but a place of life and movement, Birdsong mingles
with the rustling leaves and the creaking of branches. For children the forest is a giant playground in with
to spend their free days building huts and playing hide-and-seek. Fabian Gutscher still recalls that ludic
dimenschion of the forest. His installation, a fragile DIY mobile, moves when the visitor passes before it,
emitting a curious sound perhaps evocativeof the sudden cracking of a branch. Witout even realising it,
the viewer is entrapped by the artist‘s game and can only gaze in suprise at the affect produced by their
passage.

«Two Objects» was a sound installation for a bar in the old city of Berne. In this bar there is a unused
ancient chamber in the old wall once used to dispose sewage. The Installation played with our gender
stereotypes. There were two red buzzers placed on the entrance of the tunnel. When touched the chamber started to sound and light up in red. One of the buzzers let you play a drone-sound and the other
a rhythmic pattern. If you played it well it became a instrument. If someone just hit one of the buzzers a
woman‘s voice told you to stop. But if you were playing gentil with those buzzers the same voice encouraged you to go on playing.

For the the opening of the exhibition «Körper schmelzen Köpfe» (bodies melt heads) of Franticek Klossner, Fabian Gutscher developed a way of making piezo microphones water-resistant to make silent noises
of the melting ice hearable. As Franticek Klossners «Melting Selves» startet to melt, little crackling
noises would appear. Twice a day for one hour Fabian Gutscher used instantly recorded crackling noises
to make a collage-concert.

The Band «Inside the Baxter Building» plays improvised electronic music. The two jazz musicians
Simon Petermann and Samuel Würgler and the sound artist and musician Fabian Gutscher are constantly
pushing the boundaries of there instruments and there way of creating music. Always in the moment to
make instant compositions, where everything from melodies to noises is preferable. Committing to the
fact: Boundaries between noise and music are conventions. All Boundaries are conventions waiting to be
transcend.

The duo «Pumpen+Stumpen» was a collaboration between Fabian Gutscher and Samuel Würgler.
Improvisation was the base for two different world of sound. The jazz trumpet and the generated sound
from the computer were brought together by finding ways to electrify the trumpet and making the
sounds in the computer playable instantly. Adapted interfaces, as game controllers and analog guitarboard-effects helped achieve that goal. A collaboration with the visual artist Julia Tabakhova and her

«AUGEN::BLICKE» was a theater piece in the City of Berne from the Regisseur Bernhard Mikeska.
The spectator was seated in a shop window of the traditional shopping mall of Berne LOEB a collaboration with the Stadttheater Bern. The audience had headphones and heard the voices of the actor and
noises of the city. Fabian Gutscher developed a sound design that played with prerecorded and live
sounds. It strongened the connection between the urban place, where random things happened and the
play, which was written by Peter Stamm. Realty startet slowly to shift.

The transdiscipinary works done with the scenographer Silvan Kuhl where driven by the search towards
a new way of creating scenographical design through sound. The work in Bulach gave a critical view an
the way where threatening the old. And how capitalism has it‘s way of directing our cities constructions.
Fabian Gutscher and Silvan Kuhl re-enacted traces they found in a abandoned house in the suburbs of
Zurich. With sound, light, tactile trancducer, interactive installations and small interventions with carton
they where able to guide you through there thoughts. A world of sounds as a critique against our system.

A small step on the base of the art piece and you started your one twitter.
The bird sounds made you remember the free nature which is in danger of getting lost in the urban
space. What is natural and what is artificial? The passerby was invited to play and participate in this discurse. The piece «PfeiftindieLuft» (twitter in the air) gives back a sound-piece of artificial nature.

This sound installation bases on sound modules used in greeting cards. Fabian Gutscher used a pendulum to hack the modules. Each time the pendulum reached one of the silver contacts, one of the modules played a short part of the world famous tune «happy birthday». So every time the pendulum was
moved a sound collage has been instantly created.
