WIEDERAUFNAHME DES MUSEUMSBETRIEBES / AUSSTELLUNGEN 2015/2016
Nach dem Abschluss der Renovierungsarbeiten am und im Schloss Bönnigheim freuen wir uns Ihnen mitzuteilen, dass die Sammlung Zander ab Sonntag, dem 1. November 2015 den regulären Museumsbetrieb mit der
Ausstellung „CCC – Sava Sekulić Self-Taught“ wieder aufnimmt. Diese Einzelausstellung gibt erstmals einen
umfassenden Einblick in das Gesamtwerk des Autodidakten Sava Sekulić (1902-1989). Sie würdigt damit einen der bedeutendsten Künstler der Sammlung, dessen künstlerische Strategie als Autodidakt, vergleichbaren
Positionen der zeitgenössischen Kunst entspricht. Weitere Informationen entnehmen Sie bitte der beigefügten

MIT DER WIEDERAUFNAHME DES MUSEUMSBETRIEBES GIBT ES EINIGE NEUERUNGEN.
Mit neuen besucherfreundlichen Öffnungszeiten ist das Museum an folgenden Tagen geöffnet:
Donnerstag bis Sonntag von 11 bis 17 Uhr. Das Bücher- und Katalogsortiment des neuen Museumshops wird in Zusammenarbeit mit der Buchhandlung Walther König (Köln) erweitert. Zukünftig wird neben Publikationen zu Künstlern der Sammlung auch
ein breiteres Spektrum an Kunstbüchern angeboten.
Mit einer neuen Homepage gehen wir im November online. Für die grafische Konzeption und Gestaltung
wurde Lambl/Homburger, Berlin beauftragt.
2016 BEGEHT DIE SAMMLUNG ZANDER IHR 20-JÄHRIGES JUBILÄUM IM SCHLOSS BÖNNIGHEIM.
Aus diesem Anlass präsentiert das Museum eine Neuhängung der Sammlung, die im März 2016 eröffnet
wird. Wir freuen uns sehr, dass wir die international renommierte Kuratorin Susanne Pfeffer für die Neukonzeption der Sammlungspräsentation gewinnen konnten. Susanne Pfeffer ist Direktorin des Fridericianum in Kassel, wo sie zuletzt eine Retrospektive des Künstlers Marcel Broodthaers zeigte. Zudem kuratierte Pfeffer u.a. auf der São Paulo Biennale, der Lyon Biennale, am Tel Aviv Art Museum, dem Museum
Boijmans Van Beuningen, dem Museum für Moderne Kunst Warschau sowie den Schweizer Pavillon der
diesjährigen 56. Venedig-Biennale.
Zurzeit findet im Museum Folkwang in Essen die von Kasper König und Falk Wolf kuratierte und vielbeachtete Schau „Der Schatten der Avantgarde. Rousseau und die vergessenen Meister“ statt. Aus der Sammlung Zander sind 13 Leihgaben in dieser hochkarätigen Ausstellung zu sehen, darunter kunsthistorisch
bedeutende Gemälde von André Bauchant, Séraphine Louis, Adalbert Trillhaase und Morris Hirshfield.
Die Sammlung Zander wurde über einen Zeitraum von etwa 60 Jahren von der Mäzenin Charlotte Zander
(1930-2014) angelegt. Seit 1996 ist sie im Schloß Bönnigheim untergebracht und für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich. Im Mai 2015 wurde sie in eine gemeinnützige Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung (gGmbH)
eingebracht. Susanne Zander ist Geschäftsführerin der Gesellschaft. Zu den international bedeutenden
Künstlern der Sammlung zählen u.a.: André Bauchant, Erich Bödeker, Camille Bombois, Adolf Dietrich,
Morris Hirshfield, Séraphine Louis, Nikifor, Henri Rousseau, Sava Sekulić, Matija Skurjeni, Bill Traylor,
Adalbert Trillhaase, Scottie Wilson, Adolf Wölfli.

Die Ausstellung „CCC – Sava Sekuli ć Self-Taught“ präsentiert eine umfangreiche Auswahl aus dem Nachlass des Künstlers, der mit über 1000 Exponaten und Textmaterial Bestand der Sammlung Zander ist. Der
Künstler signierte mit den kyrillischen Buchstaben CCC – gleichbedeutend mit Sava Sekulić Self-Taught.
Damit formulierte er selbstbewusst sein künstlerisches Statement als Autodidakt. Seine Entscheidung sich
künstlerische Prozesse autodidaktisch anzueignen, erweist sich in der retrospektiven Betrachtung als eine
konsequente Strategie, die in ihrer Autonomie und Differenziertheit, vergleichbaren Methoden der zeitgenössischen Kunst entspricht.
Das Werk offenbart mit zahlreichen Skizzen und Texten das großartige visuelle Denken des Künstlers, das
permanent mit Gemälden und Zeichnungen korrespondiert. Während Sava Sekulić zunächst figurativ arbeitet, werden seine Motive mit den Jahren abstrahierter und komplexer, wobei die Grenzen oft fließend
verlaufen. Von Bild zu Bild entfalten sich stetig neue Mutationen und Zyklen. Oft bilden Menschen, Tiere
und Pflanzen eine formale oder inhaltliche Verbindung. Sie verkörpern gleichermaßen Wachstum, Verwandlung aber auch Anfechtung und Zerstörung. Zeitlebens war er fasziniert von Städten, die er oft in
Buchstaben oder als Organismen darstellte. Die eigene Kindheit, die Familie und historische Ereignisse als
Grundlage des menschlichen Daseins spielen eine ebenso wichtige Rolle im Werk des Künstlers.
Geboren in Bilisani, Kroatien, lebte Sava Sekulić (1902-1989) zuletzt in Belgrad, Serbien. Er verlor früh
seinen Vater, für ihn ein traumatisches Ereignis – ebenso wie der von Armut geprägte Alltag. 1917 kam er an
die österreichisch-italienische Front, wurde verwundet und war seitdem auf dem rechten Auge blind. Etwa
um 1924 begann er Gedichte zu schreiben. Um 1932 entstanden erste Gemälde. Nach seiner Pensionierung
1962, widmete er sich ganz der Kunst.
Noch zu Lebzeiten hatte Charlotte Zander den Wunsch eine Retrospektive des Künstlers zu zeigen. Ende der
70er Jahre wurde Charlotte Zander erstmals auf die Bilder von Sekuli ć aufmerksam und begann sie intensiv zu
sammeln. Sie vermittelte sein Werk in ihrer Galerie, auf internationalen Messen und Ausstellungen. Kurz
nach seinem Tod 1989, rettete die Sammlerin noch Teile des Nachlasses, darunter Skizzen und Gedichte.
Sie setzte sich für die Aufarbeitung des künstlerischen Lebenswerkes von Sava Sekuli ć ein. 1993 gab sie die
bisher einzige umfassende Monografie des Künstlers heraus und produzierte einen Film über den Künstler,
der ebenfalls in der Ausstellung zu sehen ist.
Die Ausstellung „CCC – Sava Sekulić Self-Taught“ wurde von Susanne Zander kuratiert.

REOPENING OF THE MUSEUM / EXHIBITIONS 2015/2016
With the completion of renovations at Schloss Bönnigheim we are pleased to inform you that the Sammlung
Zander will reopen its doors on Sunday, November 1, 2015 with the exhibition “CCC – Sava Sekulić SelfTaught.” For the first time this solo exhibition provides a comprehensive insight into the complete works of
the autodidact Sava Sekulić (1902-1989), acknowledging one of the most important artists of the collection,
whose artistic strategy as a self-taught person, resembles other comparable positions in contemporary art. For

THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL CHANGES WITH THE REOPENING OF THE MUSEUM
With new visitor-friendly opening times the museum is open on the following days:
Thursday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The book and catalog assortment of the new museum shop is being expanded in cooperation with Buchhandlung Walther König (Cologne). In the future, and in addition to publications of artists in the collection,
a broader range of art books will also be offered.
In November we will go online with a brand new homepage. Lambl/Homburger, Berlin has been commissioned for the graphic conception and design.
2016 THE SAMMLUNG ZANDER COMMEMORATES ITS TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY AT
SCHLOSS BÖNNIGHEIM
On this occasion the museum presents a new hanging of the collection, which will open in March 2016.
We are very pleased that we could win the internationally renowned curator Susanne Pfeffer to review
the presentation and conception of the collection. Susanne Pfeffer is the director of the Fridericianum in
Kassel, where she recently presented a retrospective of the artist Marcel Broodthaers. Pfeffer also curated
at the Bienal de Sao Paulo, the Biennale de Lyon, at the Tel Aviv Art Museum, the Museum Boijmans Van
Beuningen, the Museum for Modern Art Warsaw as well as at the Swiss Pavilion of this year’s 56 th Biennale
di Venezia.
Currently the Museum Folkwang in Essen is presenting the exhibition „The Shadow of the Avant-Garde.
Rousseau and the Forgotten Masters“, curated by Kasper König and Falk Wolf, which is attracting a great
deal of attention. 13 loans are presented in this high carat exhibition among them art historically important
paintings by André Bauchant, Séraphine Louis, Adalbert Trillhaase and Morris Hirshfield.
The Collection Zander was assembled by the patron Charlotte Zander (1930–2014) over a period of approximately 60 years. Since 1996 it has been housed in Schloss Bönnigheim where it was accessible to the public. In May 2015 it became a public society with limited liability. Susanne Zander, the collectors daughter,
is the director of the society.
Among the internationally renowned artists represented in the collection are among others: André Bauchant,
Erich Bödeker, Camille Bombois, Adolf Dietrich, Morris Hirshfield, Séraphine Louis, Nikifor, Henri Rousseau,

The exhibition “CCC – Sava Sekulić Self-Taught” presents a comprehensive selection from the estate of
the artist, who with more than 1000 exhibits and text material is an integral part of the Sammlung Zander.
The artist signed his works with the Cyrillic letters CCC – equivalent for Sava Sekulić Self-Taught, with
which he self-confidentially formulated his artistic statement as an autodidact. His decision to acquire artistic processes autodidactically proves in retrospect as a consequential strategy, which in its autonomy and
differentiation resembles comparable methods of contemporary art.
With numerous sketches and texts the work reveals the artist‘s excellent visual thinking, which permanently
corresponds with paintings and drawings. Initially Sava Sekulić worked only figuratively, in the course of
the years, however, his motifs became more abstract and complex, whereby the boundaries often are fluid.
From picture to picture ever-new mutations and cycles unfold. Often humans, animals, and plants form a
formal or contentual connection. They equally embody growth and transformation but also challenge and
destruction. During his entire life Sekulić was fascinated by cities, which he often represented as letters or
organisms. His own childhood, family, and historical events as the basis of the human existence play just as
important a role in the artist‘s work.
Born in Bilisani, Croatia, Sava Sekulić (1902-1989) lived last in Belgrade, Serbia. He lost his father early, a
traumatic event for him – just as the everyday life, which was characterized by poverty. In 1917, he served at
the Austrian-Italian front, was wounded and was blind on the right eye since then. Around 1924, he began
to write poetry. Around 1932, the first paintings emerged. After his retirement in 1962 he dedicated himself
completely to art.
During her lifetime, the collector Charlotte Zander had the wish to show a retrospective of the artist. At the
end of the 1970s, she noticed Sava Sekulić’s paintings for the first time and began to collect him intensively.
She acted as a broker for his work in her gallery, on international fairs and exhibitions. Shortly after his death
in 1989, Charlotte Zander managed to save part of his estate, among it sketches and poems. She advocated
for the reappraisal of Sava Sekulić’s artistic oeuvre. In 1993, she published the only existing comprehensive
monograph of the artist and produced a film about him, which can also be seen in the exhibition.
