Lifetime Achievement in Music

This year’s GOLDEN CAMERA AWARD for “Lifetime Achievement in
Music” goes to The Beach Boys
HAMBURG / ESSEN, January 27th 2016. Sun, sand, surf and good vibes are what most people
associate with the songs of The Beach Boys. But during the course of its 50-year history, the band
has proven that it has more to offer than never-ending California summers and eternal youth. Since
1961 they have produced one hit song after the next. “I Get Around” was their very first charttopper, which they followed up with such classics as “California Girls” and “Surfin’ USA”.
In 1966 their legendary album “Pet Sounds” was released, which has since served as a source of
inspiration to numerous bands – the Beatles reportedly being among them. The album “Pet
Sounds” marked a changing point in the musical development of The Beach Boys: Their sound
became significantly more experimental, using overlapped sound fragments that were incredibly
innovative at the time. They used bicycle bells and barking dogs for special effects and set new
standards in melodic perfection. The album also features the love song “God Only Knows”, which
Sir Paul McCartney reportedly considers “the most beautiful song that was ever written”. After
spending many months in the recording studio, they released “Good Vibrations” during that very
same year. The tune sold over a million copies and is the band’s all-time, most-played song.
“The Beach Boys have produced countless classics. To date they still represent a distinctive
lifestyle – musical heroes sporting Hawaii shirts, who have made the successful transition from light
surfer pop to serious rock melodies,” according to the GOLDEN CAMERA. “They created
magnificently arranged songs, and their captivating rhythm expressed a sheer joy of life, as well as
were able to convey melancholy in symphonies with sophisticated compositions of the highest
musical standards.” For these accomplishments, The Beach Boys will receive the GOLDEN
CAMERA AWARD for their “Lifetime Achievement in Music”.
In 1988, their song “Kokomo” was part of the soundtrack of the cinema classic “Cocktail” starring
Hollywood actor Tom Cruise. For their 50th band anniversary in 2012, The Beach Boys released
their last album to date, “That’s Why God Made the Radio”, which they followed up with a major
world tour. Even today, the band led by Mike Love, including Bruce Johnston, is still going strong
performing over 150 shows per year.
The gala presentation of THE GOLDEN CAMERA AWARD, hosted by Thomas Gottschalk, will be
broadcast live on February 6, 2016 at 8:15 p.m. on ZDF.
