Was genau kennzeichnet ihren Stil als
Architekt?
Mit Mallorca fand ich den fantastischsten Platz
zum Leben und Arbeiten mit einer inspirierenden Landschaft. Diese Insel hat auch meinen
Stil und meine Vogelhaus-Ideen geprägt. Mir
sind Bildhauer und Maler eigentlich näher als
„normale“ Architekten. Insofern sind meine
Kreationen eher Skulpturen, in denen man
lebt. Häuser, die sich wie Möwen an diese
traumhaften Steilküsten schmiegen. Häuser,
von denen man denkt, sie würden gleich abheben, um der Sonne entgegen zu fliegen,
Häuser, die ihre Bewohner im wahrsten Sinne
des Wortes „beflügeln“ – so etwas zu schaffen
übt bis heute eine unglaubliche Faszination auf
mich aus. Und ohne diese Leidenschaft könnte
man ja auch nichts Großes kreieren...
Kann man Vogelhäuser nur direkt am
Meer bauen?
Nein, ich habe z.B. mein erstes Vogelhaus in
der Nähe von Augsburg (Deutschland) gebaut
– auf dem Land. Auch da passt es hin, aber
ideal ist die Verschmelzung von Himmel,
Klippe, Meer und Möwe.

„Meine Häuser sagen mehr als tausend Worte“ – diese Adaption
eines Sprichworts könnte von ihm stammen: Star-Architekt Alberto
Rubio (52). Obgleich der gebürtige Uruguayer, der seit 28 Jahren auf
Mallorca lebt, dieses Prädikat sicher ablehnt. Kein Mann für die
Medien, selbst auf seiner Homepage (www.albertorubio.com) finden sich nur Bilder seiner spektakulären Häuser – keine Erklärungen, keine Kontaktmöglichkeiten. Das muss reichen, meint er.
Und er hat auch Recht. Denn seine Konstruktionen sind so einzigartig und wirken aus der Nähe, aus der Ferne und im Inneren so beeindruckend auf den Betrachter, dass Erklärungen überflüssig sind. Er
nennt sie „Vogelhäuser“ (las casas pájaro), die, meist strahlend weiß
an einer Klippe gebaut, eine Einheit mit Meer, Himmel, Küste und
dem Rest der Natur bilden. Möwen nachempfunden mit FlügelDächern, weichen Formen und einfach nur wunderschön. Und für
diese meisterlichen Anwesen zahlen seine Auftraggeber auch gerne
sehr viel Geld. Wir trafen den medienscheuen Visionär zum
Exklusiv-Interview.
What are the hallmarks of your architectural style?
Planen und bauen Sie nur das Haus
oder beschäftigen Sie sich auch mit
der Ausstattung?
Solche Häuser kann man nicht „normal“ ausstatten. Man muss die Philosophie der
Kreation als Einheit sehen. Und so arbeite ich
mit namhaften Ausstattern (viele kommen aus
Deutschland) zusammen, die über Jahre hinweg harmonisch mein Konzept auch bei der
Inneneinrichtung umsetzen. Bei all der
Modernität sollen die Häuser auch gemütlich
sein – Wohlfühl-Häuser zum Leben und
Glücklichsein, keine coolen Luxusvillen oder
Ausstellungsstücke.
“One of my houses says more than a thousand words,” to adapt a
well-known saying. And in the case of star architect Alberto Rubio
(52) it is very apt, although this native Uruguayan who has lived in
Mallorca for the past 28 years would certainly laugh off any such
label. He is not one to court media attention and his website
(www.albertorubio.com) consists entirely of images of his spectacular houses – no commentary and no contact link. In his view, that
should be enough. And he is right because his projects are so unique
and have such an effect on the beholder – whether from close up or
some distance away, from the exterior or interior – that explanations are superfluous. He calls them ‘bird houses’ (las casas pájaro).
Gleaming white structures generally sited on cliff tops, they are in
harmony with the sea, the sky, the coastline and the rest of nature.
Soft contours with fabulous wing-shaped roofs, reminiscent of seagulls. And his clients are happy to pay huge sums for these masterfully designed properties. This media-shy visionary granted us an exclusive interview.
Rubio arbeitet organisch-harmonisch, transparent, offen, mit natürlichen Materialien der
Insel: Holz, Terracotta, dazu viel Glas.
Natürlich gibt es nicht nur Kurven und weiche
Formen, sondern auch klare Linien und
Strukturen, denn „man kann nie nur das eine
oder das andere machen. Nicht nur rund und
geschwungen oder nur eckig und rechtwinklig.
Es muss – wie in der Natur – alles in Harmonie
zusammengebracht werden. Damit der Geist
sich frei entfalten kann – ähnlich wie im
Taoismus. Alles muss fließen: Körper, Geist,
Materie oder wie in meinen Vogelhäusern:
auch „fliegen“...
In Mallorca with its inspirational landscape I
found the most fantastic place for living and
working. This island shaped my style and my
‘bird house’ ideas. I feel more affinity with
sculptors and painters than with ‘regular’
architects. To that extent, my creations are
more sculptures for living in. Houses that cling
to these amazing steep cliffs just like seagulls
do. Houses that you might imagine are about
to take off and fly up towards the sun, houses
that – in the truest sense of the word – give
their owners wings. I never cease to be fascinated by the nature of these structures and the
sheer scope they offer. And without this passion we are unable to create great things…
Is it only possible to build ‘bird houses’ right next to the sea?
No. I actually built my first bird house in a
countryside location near Augsburg in
Germany. It fitted in well there too but the
ideal blend for me is one of sky, cliff top, sea
and seagull.
Do you restrict yourself to planning
and construction or do you also take
an interest in the décor?
You can’t furnish houses like these in the normal way. You have to see the philosophy
behind their creation as a unity. So I work with
reputable interior designers (many of them
from Germany) who over the years have incorporated my basic concepts into the décor to
produce a harmonious whole. Whilst these
houses are modern, they should nonetheless
be cosy and comfortable homes to live in.
Places where people can be happy rather than
cool luxury villas or trophy houses.
Rubio’s approach is organic, harmonious,
transparent and honest. He uses natural materials found on the Island: wood, terracotta and
plenty of glass. Of course, there is more to
this style than curves and soft forms: there are
also clear lines and structures because, “you
can’t simply restrict yourself to one or the
other. Not just round and curvaceous or sharp
and angular. Just like nature itself, everything
should be brought together in harmony. So
that the spirit can manifest itself freely, rather
like in Taoism. Everything must ‘flow’ – body,
mind, matter – or, as in the case of my bird
houses, take wing and fly…”
