Restrepia pulchella Mohr und R. iris Luer unterscheiden sich bereits auf den ersten Blick durch die Grundfärbung des Synsepalums, welche im Fall von R. pulchella rein weiß, bei allen als eindeutig R. iris bestimmbaren Pflanzen gelblich erscheint (Abb. 1a & 1b). Irreführend ist die in Luer's Beschreibung angeführte weißliche Färbung von R. iris, während er in der gleichen Publikation typisch gelb gefärbte abbildet. Das gleiche gilt für die Lippenfärbung. Im Text bezeichnet er sie als orange, während diese auf seiner Abbildung tief purpurrot ist. Der Verdacht liegt nahe, dass R. iris anhand eines Alkoholpräparates beschrieben wurde. In beiden Fällen wird die Grundfärbung durch eine tief purpurrote Linienzeichnung, die sich zur Synsepalumspitze in eine lockere Fleckung ausdünnt überdeckt. Als charakteristischstes Unterscheidungsmerkmal ist die Form des Labellums hervorzuheben. Bei R. iris endet die Epichilspitze abgeschnitten mit deutlich eingesenktem Mittelbereich, während diese bei R. pulchella abgerundet ist. Der Isthmus zwischen Epichil und Hypochil ist bei R. iris deutlich ausgeprägter. Die papillöse Struktur des Epichils tritt bei R. pulchella stärker hervor. Die Grundform des Synsepalums ist bei R. pulchella deutlich runder. Für die Autoren bestand nie ein Zweifel, dass es sich hier um zwei deutlich unterschiedene Arten handelt, jedoch wurde die Thematik nie weiterverfolgt. In 1998 beschrieb Luer ein mit R. pulchella identischen Taxon, R. piperitosa, ohne Würdigung der bereits beschriebenen Art. Nach dem Vergleich der Erstbeschreibung von R. piperitosa (Blütengröße, Blütenfärbung, Struktur des Labellums) mit R. pulchella sind beide Taxa als identisch zu behandeln. Aufgrund der Priorität der früheren Beschreibung von R. pulchella ist R. piperitosa als Synonym zu betrachten. Die Autoren danken Herrn Wiel Driessen für den Hinweis. Literatur Luer, C.A. However, C.A.Luer in his monograph Icones Pleurothallidinarum XIII, Systematics of Restrepia (Orchidaceae; 1996) subsumed it as a synonym to his Restrepia iris Luer. Restrepia pulchella Mohr differs from R. iris Luer, most obviously, on the ground coloration of the synsepal. In the case of R. pulchella, it is white, whereas that of R. iris is yellow (Fig. 1a & 1b). Although it is described as being white, a photo of this species clearly do match. The picture shows a flower with a yellow synsepal. The same discrepancy was observed in the coloration of the labellum. In the description, it was stated as being orange. The photographed flower, however, possesses an reddish-purple color. It is probable that he based his description on an alcohol-preservedsample of the species. Both the labellum and the synsepal have reddish-purple striping, distally spotting. The shape of the labellum is a distinguishing character among species of Restrepia. R. iris has a truncate epichil, with a lightly-depressed median portion. The distal end of the labellum in R. pulchella is rather round. The isthmus between the epichil and the hypochil is more distinct in R. iris than in R. pulchella. Furthermore, the papillose structure of the epichil is more pronounced in R. pulchella than in R. iris. The synsepal in R. pulchella is wider in the middle as in R. iris giving it rounder shape. Based on these characteristics, R. pulchella Mohr and R. iris Luer are obviously not the same species as Luer proposed. Interestingly, Luer (1998) described another species several years after the original publication of R. pulchella Mohr, R. piperitosa. Other than the locality where the plant was purportedly collected, the description corresponds to that of Mohrs’ Restrepia. Careful comparison of the descriptions (especially flower size and coloration, structure of the labellum) suggests that R. piperitosa is indeed R. pulchella. And since Mohr (1993) published his description of this taxon prior to Luers’ publication (1998), R. piperitosa is hereby subsumed to a synonym of R. pulchella.
